Fils-Aime: Sony and Microsoft "erred" in making expensive consoles

Wii Reggie Fils Aime - Image 1After proclaiming in a previous speech that "everyone's a gamer", Nintendo of America's president, Reggie Fils-Aime, gave their inventors more reasons why they should stay with Nintendo.

Fils-Aime said that Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo's rivals in the console race, made a grave mistake in developing expensive and hard-to-develop-for systems that only cater to the core gamer set. "They've put themselves in a box. I don't know how they're going to get out of it," he said in a presentation to Nintendo's investors.

A strategic conundrum? It may be so, but it should be noted that thanks to Bungie Studios' Halo 3, Microsoft is now getting its own slice of success and is currently enjoying an increase in hardware sales. On the other hand, Sony is now also enjoying a certain level of increased sales due to its recent price cuts and the introduction of budget PS3 SKUs.

fool

wii is a fad. how many wii owners have purchased over 1 game? not many. hardware sales dont matter if game sales arent there.
by Burn_Griffith - 2007-11-07 14:24:10
I agree

Well, talk about a mouth full. But I agree with GW2. The game system is dependant on the game sales. Without game sales, it [the game system] would mean jack.
by Nevers - 2007-11-07 14:30:11
so what

I bought a wii to pass the time my xbox was in repair. The wii was fun for the month but now it collects dust. I've loved Nintendo but the wii is merely another Tickle me Elmo fad. I don't foresee any reason for me to buy any new games for the wii as I'm tired of old grafix, redundantly awful music, and reading subtitles. If it wasn't for the VC that I might eventually get into I'd of sold it by now. I'll buy quality games for the wii if they are ever able to produce them. But everything i've seen on the way for the wii is a renter... flame away

Yeah, Microsoft and Sony are Stupid!

They've done that stupid thing where they tried to advance Graphics, Gameplay, Storage, Sound and many other things. Silly them, doing what other consoles have done every generation jump! Should of just done what Nintendo did and release an overclocked version of a console already out and add a wankery motion sensor on it!
by freezola75 - 2007-11-07 15:19:01
whoa Reggie fall back with that....

propaganda mess jack!! Amazing that these crack-pots come out slandering their direct competitors when the Wii-Wii in my opinion is so retro that it practically screams outdated! All i'll say is we'll see not in 10, not in 6, but 4 to 5 years from now if folks will still be playing that sillyness verses the other consoles. Hey, i guess it's easy to talk trash when you got the top spot simply because your console was the cheapest. There's a reason that it cost less than the others because it doesn't have much to offer. Even the kids who played it religiously over the past 9 months are ready to grow up. Hey Fils-Aime (crazy name lol) get ready to be disappointed.
by Mister Common Sense - 2007-11-07 15:28:29
Reggie is a moron, even for a corporate douchebag

He may think he's in a good position, but not really. Just because the Wii is temporarily a hot item, he thinks this is a opportunity to get a big ego and do some trash talking. He doesn't realize how fragile Nintendo's Wii success really is. "The challenge that our competitors have is significant. They've gone down the path with building expensive machines that they lose money on. They've gone down the path with games that are hard to develop," Fils-Aime said in response to a question from an audience member. "They've put themselves in a box. I don't know how they're going to get out of it," he continued. Let's just see what the Wii has going against it shall we? Nobody is interested in the Wii except non gamers and retards interested in last gen games and next gen pricing. Nearly everyone that bought a Wii has less than 3 games (most only have Wii sports, not really a game.) The Wii has the least third party support of any game console, and the least interest in new titles. Nintendo has Mario Galaxy, Wii Fit, and Smash Brothers. That's it for the next 6 months, and aparently nothing after that. Ooh lets not forget the last gen PS2 ports with new Wii controls! No plans for the future. A big September suprise was a lie- nothing, just BS excuses like "we never said which year September." You can give VC games as gifts, but that only helps Nintendo. They're out of ideas, and will soon be desperate for the next console they can recycle from old parts. XBOX 360 game sales regularly exceed PS3 and Wii game sales combined by a wide margin, in addition to having a much wider variety and quanity of higher rated titles. Besides, the XBOX 360 sells for a mere $30 more than the Wii retails for (it sells for even more because Nintendo refuses to make enough of them.) For the enhanced benefits "expensive" consoles provide, they are easily worth the money. In her presentation, Mount noted that the 360 sells more games per unit than the Wii or the PS3. This helps engender the loyalty of third-party game makers such as Electronic Arts (ERTS) , UBisoft, Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) and Activision (ATVI) to develop titles for the console. Microsoft's Mount pointed out that the 360 has the greatest number of game titles with 90-plus ratings. According to Metacritic's Web site, there are currently 11 360 titles with ratings equal to or above 90, compared to four for the Wii and two for the PS3."

yeah

and dude the PS2 dominated the Gamecube. If they're continuing to go with expensive processing chips that's because it's what works. The Wii's only doing well because girls and grandparents like playing wii bowling and it's cheap enough for them to buy one to do so.

Shut up Troll

Dude, I don't know how many times I've had to call you out on your personal hate ranting. Every single other person on this article that disagreed with Reggie, or even the Nintendo strategy had something constructive to say why they disagree. If all these people that think the Wii is garbage, fine I still think they are cool people for giving their opinion respectably. YOU, on the other hand just sit and wait for any Nintendo article either positive or negative to show up then you start with all your worthless commenting, stereotyping, and blatant insults. Example: %u201CNobody is interested in the Wii except non-gamers and retards interested in last gen games and next gen pricing.%u201D I have a Wii, so in other words you are calling me a retard? I%u2019ve seen countless posts identical to this one on many other spots on qj.net, where you directly insult everybody around you. And for what? You say that you are doing everybody a favor by telling the masses about how much the Wii %u201CSucks%u201D, but seriously everybody will be thankful if you just kept to yourself. I seriously don't know what your vendetta is toward Nintendo and/or it's fan base, nor do I give a damn. But for qj.net, true Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo fans, and me, just shut your trap already!!!
by LordQuas431 - 2007-11-07 16:36:38
.

I like Reggie's confidence and always have but making a statement like that is ridiculous in my eyes. If they made console along the same lines of a Wii there wouldn't be much development in gaming. The Wii's controllers are about the only thing that makes it fun to me because most of the games aren't to great, and before you flame me I said MOST meaning that yes, there are some great games available on Wii

LOL

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimes states that their rivals, Sony and Nintendo, They don't consider M$ competition lol typo..
by FreePlay - 2007-11-07 16:58:52
The wii

is terrible.
by platon - 2007-11-07 17:00:08
Now they cost around the price of the wii...

And what can you do with a wii? Play casual games... tennis? lol
by blkthunda - 2007-11-07 18:45:52
...

They do sell a lot of games. Just because you dont' have one doesn't mean other doesn't buy games for it.
by hush404 - 2007-11-07 21:58:58
lol

Exactly. Sony and Microsoft are the ones advancing the industry while Nintendo stays on the "sell as much useless crap accessories as we can" ideal as they pawn off their newest system. Sure, people (non-"core-gamers") are interested in it now, but IT WILL FADE. Sales records are proof that gamers are buying more games for their 360s/PS3s than the Wii owners and it's these "core-gamers" (of which nintedo is neglecting) that will drive the industry into the future. They're the ones that stand in line for the next halo or god of war and the ones that plunk down that extra cash for the SE or LE editions of their favorite games. Moms and grandmas aren't going to give jack sh*t about anything unless it's mindless and cheap.

Hand up

I actually sold my Wii 4 remotes and nunchucks madden 07 zelda, rayman, wii play and trauma center for $300. to top it all off the guy tried to talk me down. I dont see the value in the wii. i played it for a month and got bored despite buying more and more games. the wii motes are about as accurate at tracking motion as my newborn.
by Techni - 2007-11-07 23:18:38
Correction...

He said Sony and MS erred in making a console for the gamer's benefit, rather than lining their own pockets. He suggested they be more greedy in the future rather than trying to bring the industry forward. Then began shouting, down wioth voice acting, cd quality music, and online multiplayer
by Kingofdaberbz - 2007-11-07 23:22:45
wow

speechless................................
by Mleep - 2007-11-08 06:32:52
Hmm

I'm not so sure Reggie should make comments like that at this point. Wii may sell well, but it's also suffering from a lack of strong titles. Personally I don't think that's much to boast with. Sure, its great for the company, but not so much for us players. And people do want next-gen games as well, so PS3 and X360 are needed. Everyone doesn't "only" play DS or Wii games, if that's what he thinks.
by HakatoX - 2007-11-08 11:23:50
too funny

that's why I sold my wii and bought a PSP slim and lite..... hell they have the same exact capability(cept motion control). and also went and bought a PS3. nintendo can think they can call other's out ... but until they get a solid online platform ... nintendo is just gonna be a midget on a soap box yelling at everyone for living tall till the end of time
by HakatoX - 2007-11-08 11:33:36
Re: anonamoose you got ripped off!

sold my wii 2 wiimotes, 2 nunchucks , LOZTP, MP8, sports, 2 gc games 1gc mem .... 3 gc wavebirds.... I got 350.00
by Billie - 2007-11-08 12:29:21
huh?

Just curious, I assume that you are saying that Sony/Microsoft products are for the gamer's benefit, while Nintendo is being greedy. Last time I checked, the only system that is stand alone gaming system is the Nintendo, while the others are trying to be media centers, HD - DVD players, and BlueRay Players. If anything, Sony is the worst in terms of lining pockets. They specificially put a BlueRay player inside the PS3 in attempt to force a new media adoption in the current market. They didn't care if the gamers got screwed because this jacked up the price, but rather said "Who cares if our gamers don't want to spend money on a BlueRay Player, we are going to make them anyways because we want to win the HD format war."
by Billie - 2007-11-08 12:50:17
man

To Anonamoose Rather than blamming your poor business choices on the "Wii" itself, why don't you question your selling options? I mean on ebay alone the Wii "bare bones" is going for about $200.00 USED. I see bundles with 4 controllers, 5 games, not including Wii Sports or Wii Play going for about $500.00 bucks used. You could probably use local classifieds to get more.
by Billie - 2007-11-08 12:56:49
To Hush

Well thats all relative to what you consider "Advancing". Because honestly, just looking at the handheld market, I don't think that the PSP advanced the industry at all even though it is technologically superior to the DS. Also, "crap accessories" I believe are a fad, but it's working. I mean everybody bought GHIII, and everybody wants Rock Band, and they all have "crap accessories". Another thing, what is your definition of a "core-gamer"? I would like to make another argument, but everybody's definition of this word is different.
by anonamoose - 2007-11-09 03:05:51
reply.

I just didnt care. I didnt need the money i sold it to a friend who didnt have any console. It was a charity case but yea the bastard still tried to give me $250.
