Fils-Aime "embarrassed" by Sony, Microsoft's motion control attempts

Sony and Microsoft are now moving into the Wii-dominated motion-controlled gaming market. So, what does Nintendo think about it? NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime says they'd be embarrassed to do what the two console manufacturers are currently doing.

"I think a hallmark of Nintendo is that we are constantly trying to innovate," he said in an interview with gaming blog Kotaku. "I think we would have been embarrassed to do what our competitors are currently doing."

Nintendo seems unconcerned about the current state of things, but what about the future? Fils-Aime again laid to rest speculation about a Wii HD, saying that while HD is definitely one of the things they're looking into, it by itself won't be a reason for Nintendo to put out a new console. It needs to provide "a whole new compelling experience" as well.

"When Mr. Miyamoto goes to Mr. Iwata and says. 'I have this great idea and I can't do it on the Wii,' that's when there will be a next generation console. What that includes we'll see,"
We will provide something new. Something that the consumer and the industry will look at and say 'Wow, I didn't see that coming.'"

"When Mr. Miyamoto goes to Mr. Iwata and says. 'I have this great idea and I can't do it on the Wii,' that's when there will be a next generation console. What that includes we'll see," he said.

Just in case anybody had doubts regarding Miyamoto's pull at Nintendo:

When Mr. Miyamoto goes to Mr. Iwata and says. 'I have this great idea and I can't do it on the Wii,' that's when there will be a next generation console.

So there will never be a new console then. Since Miyamoto is looking to make toys and not games.

I'm sure we can all look forward to Wii Music 2 :o .

Miyamoto has already complained Wii didn't have enough processing power to do things in the new Mario game he wanted.

Also, Nintendo has no right to talk. They copied everything they ever did. And still drag their feet on things like HD and online.

So when Nintendo moves into the HD and 3D market Sony and Microsoft (if MS implements 3D) can laugh at them, because they will surely be behind on them two aspects. They are talking about inoovation? they are the only company of the three that isnt doing anything inoovative.

Sony = 3D tech and PS Move
Microsoft = Natal
Nintendo = uhmm, MotionPlus 2?

Really, what would that be? Cuz from what I remember, Nintendo is the company that puts out the most random, albeit oft-failing, innovations. Some that pop in my head are ROB, NES Power Pad, NES Power Glove, SNES GB Adapter, N64->GBC Adapter, Gamecube->GBA Link Adapter, E-reader, Nintendo DS dual touch screens, Wii Motion Control and the Wii balance board. I'm sure I'm probably missing some. Some of those have now been copied by other company's.

And yet Nintendo is ahead. Many people may have stopped playing it after a month, but I think that's only a part of the purchase crowd. Many people who never played games before now play the Wii on a somewhat regular basis.

Hardcore games != Halo, Resistance, COD, or other popular FPS's which are the biggest reason most people play 360/PS3.

It's about numbers and Nintendo's got them this time around. If it truly is a gimmick, we'll see on the next system iteration because there will be enough people who were burned on buying a Wii that will not touch a Wii2.

FYI - there was another wii shortage a month or so ago. Now why would there be a shortage on a system everyone is tired of playing?

I say the controls are still Gimmicky when they don't even work right and 90% of all games you just keep swinging the damn thing around to win, O..Yeah real fun...not!
Wii games have no skill just wave around like some dumb 5year old and win the game, I guess that's what happens when the controls don't work like they should.

Everyone plays the Wii for a month and says okay this is getting boring. Wii haven't touched for I don't know 2 months and only got it for 3 and half months so far. PS3 constantly play it. Xbox has been sitting there collecting dust for about 2 weeks since its banned. Now the Wii is a fad and will always be a fad until it can rake up the amount of hours played per console comes close to the PS3 or 360. And that will never happen because for every core gamer on the Wii that puts in hours there are 10000 casual gamers that play 30 mins a day or when friends come over cause after all like someone else said. It's just a really expensive board game.

gimmicky, only play for a month... sounds like a lot of jealous fan boys if you ask me.

If I remember correctly, both 360 and PS3 had the lead and everyone was stating that nothing would come from Nintendo.... 4 years later, what is it... wii 61.7 million sold, while 360 is something like 33 million, or something like that. Sales do not lie, and although there maybe a lot more casual gamers (as you fan boys would no doubt say), at least Nintendo have not stooped to copying another consoles idea just in an attempt to get more business. haha such losers.

research what they are "copying" and you'll see they all were done before nintendo, they just didn't make a console out of a gimmick.

just inclining that sales is what shows a product is of high quality and how much it will be used is stupid.. these consoles are aimed at 10 yr old and below or 40 yr old people and over. these people in most cases do not see the real side of the tech and therefore dont really care about the limitations of the hardware etc. . these people should not count in judging if it is a good product or not. Wii is rubbish.
..think about how well the pet rock sold.

There are more games on the Wii I enjoy than on the PS3 or 360, with the PC being my main gaming platform for everything that feels wrong to play on the consoles (RTS, FPS).

No I'm not a PC fan boy, or any other fan boy... I do own a PC of course, and have never touched WoW... I find it very boring.

I also owned both 369 and PS3 and found games just boring, so what if the graphics are good, the games are nothing new... I was button bashing on the snes all those years ago... I find the Wii much more fun, and if you really think that pressing a button to swing a sword is actually better than the sword moving with your every movement, then you are a fool. Red Steel is going to show what the motion plus is capable off, and I do hope that Zelda truely shows off it's power... far better than bashing a few buttons.. like I said, I was doing that on the snes.

Oh, I also have the controller set up on my PC to play counter strike, haha can't beat that :P

The main point though relates to this article, Microsoft and Sony are jumping in on motion control now because it is the way forward.... people, or at least sane people, do not want to button bash anymore. Nintendo has taken a giant step forward and it has paid off, the next gen of consoles will be quite something because of this.

Not all PC gamers are 300+ lbs and live in a basement.

And from most of what I've seen most WoW junkies are under the age of 18.

PRO Tip: Nobody really has a basement anymore unless you are living in a dilapidated house built in the early 1900s.

So? Sony copies and improves on Nintendo's ideas some. They used ideas for controllers but also didn't Sony first have a motion controller with the Eye Toy. Also I remember Nintendo resisted and argued that they didn't need disc based games for their games, but they gradually changed their mind. Who cares as long as they make great improvements in entertainment. I hope Nintendo pulls out all the guns on the next console and makes a killer system for us with great content. Maybe Blu-ray, high definition graphics with high power and most importantly, give us great games.

I find it hard to believe that Miyamoto hasn't had the hardware idea for a sleek HMD with headtracking, and an intertial wiimote controller (without needing IR sensors). Nintendo play their cards close to their chest, and seeing as though all this HD talk is coming from hardcore gamers (a very small share of their market), i doubt that is their 'master plan'.

I'm seriously tired of these "hardcore" gamers whining about HD. Core gaming is not limited to FPS, 3rdPS, Racing Sims, Fighters, and/or anything M rated. It's all about gameplay.

The Wii isn't innovative, all it is is a Gamecube with waggle controls. It wasn't true motion control until the motion plus added 1:1 movement but that's not even added to new Wii remotes, they want to charge extra for it and don't even support it like it should be. He's just trying to fuel the fanboy flame wars. I have all 3 consoles and haven't played my Wii in about a year, if it wasn't for my love of Mario and Zelda I wouldn't have bought one at all. On top of that Nintendo is screwing their customers left and right with over priced accessories and crappy $50 mini games that you get for $1 on the iPhone. It costs $80 plus batteries for a controller setup of a wii remote, motion plus, and the nunchuck, how does that make sense. And the Wii itself is basically just a Gamecube with WiFi built in and it cost $200. For that price you can get a PS3 or 360 and get real games to play.

the older nintendo fans such as myself may also give it a miss (expecially at launch)as we feel abandoned with all these throw away cheap games.

the only innovation I've seen from Nintendo is when the Game Boy came out, the Virtual Boy and the Wii...the rest where just a different console that used what had been seen before...a box using cartridges to play games...the DS isn't innovative since the touch screen tech has been out for quite a while

If you own a 360 or PS3, you are a gamer. When you give true gamers more options, it'll sell. It won't be a "short term fad" like nintendo planned for.

You're all retarded.

Try to think of this Sony controller as an advancement for gaming in general. It's what the wiimote SHOULD have been originally.

It doesn't matter what company is doing what.

Give me a fun, addictive, and exciting game. Who cares what brand is on it?

You guys are like girls arguing over different clothing labels.

Just play games, god damn it. be happy we're moving forward.

Wii is garbage and nintendo creating another console will also be garbage.. i hope nintendo sink, so they have to close shop and become like sega and only create mario and zelda games for other consoles.. thats wat they deserve for stabbing sony in the back ..back in the days

" It needs to provide "a whole new compelling experience" as well."

So what's with the DS Lite and now the DSI XL?

m$$oft has rrd & ninty is behind on graphics/good quality games (from 3rd party devs).

Screw both of em! I'm always gonna be a sony person. go sony. sure they're expensive but they make beter stuff than those 2 (even if they have to steal an already developed idea) & they get great 3rd party support!

Btw ive had all the consoles so my opinion isnt biased

Microsoft and Sony are so hardcore that is why they want to implement motion based controllers on their respective consoles
