Fanboyism and the console war: what are they good for?

The battle for supremacy begins hereWAR! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. The words of Edwin Starr's "War" keep ringing inside my head when I see how hostile the world has become, and I don't have far to go to see it. Whether it's a world war or a console war, the outcome is the same, and that's a whole lot of disunity and angry words.

We've found and covered this little nugget of mysterious weirdness on the internet twice, called nexgenwars.com, and it's looking to serve as a real-time representation of the console wars as it happens. We checked on it again, and it still happens to be up. The thing is, what use does it serve gamers in general except to polarize people and start the wars of the fanboys?

Let's face it: not everyone can afford all three consoles, and so you're bound to pick one to be your main squeeze for the coming years. That's all well and good, since competition keeps companies on their toes and helps to ensure we have better tech every few years, but sites like this don't really help. Add to that the constant advertising and the badmouthing of other companies and their wares and you have a large-scale flamefest.

"Fanboyism" is nice because we can share our love for consoles and what they can offer us as a means of play. From the perspective of ad agencies and marketers (as well as anarchists around the world), however, our love of games means an opportunity to raise hype by any means necessary because the bottom line for someone who isn't a gamer isn't fun: it's money.

"War has caused unrest in the younger generation/ Induction then destruction..." The lyrics of that song are haunting simply because they apply to something as trivial as our love for games. The best way for us to win the console wars is to be happy that we're all getting the fun we want at the prices we can afford. If you believe the same, then take those lyrics to heart, and be constructive in your criticism and heartfelt in your love for games.

wiii and the ps3 has big percentages with zero consoles sold and the majority haven't even seen the system first hand yet... looks like x360 is in big trouble once the war heats up.. this should looks interesting. XD

» qj.net is a breeding ground for fanboyism

They always post any negative rumor surrounding sony and the ps3 no matter how stupid or proven flase it is.

» Agree

I agree with ??. QJ's presentation of the negative points of the PS3, while numerous, were biased while the negative points of the Wii were presented with a sense of doubtfulness.

» This article

This article is not necessary, true what we say in these forums do not affect the outcome of system sales, but people just like to talk and express how they feel about the systems, the only thing that messes up these post is people saying things that do not make any sense or saying things that they are not sure about, some people even resort to lying just to make the system they like look better than the other systems and that is just not cool, all it does is get people upset and that is when the flaming starts.

i wish that all qj authors took high school and college level english course...

don't use cliches!!! -if you do have to, make it something simple for a transition and not a really bad popular culture one..

» contextual, I suppose.

You should note, however, that Sony's current track record has been filled with unfulfilled promises as of late. While the Wii has had its share of problems, they haven't been making as many hard promises, so until a confirmed failure, doubt seemed preferable to being polarizing.

Regardless, I see your point. I can't vouch for the other folks here, but I will try to be more careful about staying objective withnews articles in the future, though I'll still need to add an opinion or two to really call it my own.

As for this one, the above is my personal opinion. To paraphrase a philosopher, I do not hate a console; merely the reprehensible actions it brings in its passing.

» A modest proposal?

.....?

You may not like the song, but the lyrics fit well with the idea.

Would you have preferred this article to embody the satirical style of Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal: For Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick?

Because that's doable too... I'd just need to make some references to selling babies for food.

» Me

Me naming myself (Xbox is the best) is not a lie, if I say xbox is the best system then that is how I feel, but If I say xbox 360 is faster than playstation 3 then I better back up my claims with some facts or I am going to upset people. That is what I am talking about. There is a difference.

Too true. But still, we don't get many appeals for commenters to not be so hostile, and sites with leaderboards like that one push the differences and potential for flaming a bit further, I suppose.

» Hmmm

Looks like the Wii is shaping up to be quite a formidable foe, eh? Well, I was thinking about getting a PS3, but the more I read about the Wii, the more I think "What the heck is the point?"

Deffinately food for thought.

I think I will get a Wii, come November - if their are any left, lol!

The PS3 is over-rated by sony. Just wait until it comes out.

» well

swift's modest proposal, very entertaining and i love satire very much it just does not fit in this scenario.
