Factor 5: Julian talks consoles

The year's coming to a close, and as all three consoles are now in the market, we're going to be hearing more from Factor 5's Julian Eggebrecht.

Gamasutra's just had an interview with the dude, and aside from making inquiries into Julian's next-year aspirations, they've also posed another question many a dev has probably heard: What's his take on the three consoles?

Julian started out by talking about the PS3 - the console on which his Lair title was banking on. Julian was quick to point out how much he liked the PS3's Blu-Ray and the video quality it was churning out for his Plasma TV. As for his thoughts on the PS3's online pack:

I was very skeptical about that and how Sony would pull it off, and it's pretty damn close to Live, and actually some of the usability I prefer to Live, quite frankly. So I think that all went extremely well, and the potential is just huge.

He went on to mention that at this point, the PS3's biggest flaw was its shortage of good games on launch day - we're sure you guys felt the same way, even if we've got Resistance to tide things over... Next, he commented on the Xbox 360, which started with his impressions on its current best-selling title:

For Xbox 360, I have to say Gears of War is massively impressive. Really really cool game, kudos to Cliffy. It just keeps going Â– it's a little awkward that the 1080p is kind of ratcheted in there, so I'm not too excited about that, it seems kind of tacked on so I don't know how much potential is out there, but the 360 is a solid system by now.

And for the last console he's seen, the Wii was a loved product, though he admitted to loving it for different reasons. If the PS3 was loved for the hardcore gaming it offered, the Wii was there for the casual gaming it was churning out. Julian mentions Wii Sports as one of his current faves, and adds that the Wii would have been a good "secondary" console to guys already carrying a PS3 or Xbox 360.

That aside, Julian did foresee the problem third-party developer might have with the Wii. Having a very specialized set of controls, the Wii might make for long-term complications for developers. And as for his tie-up to the topic:

But I think nobody should be without the Wii. And quite frankly if you want to be really secure in the future, and if you're a real techno geek, I think the PS3 has a lot more to offer than the Xbox 360 at the end of the day. But when the PS3 comes to games, right now, it's a little bit weak.

I agree with this guy, however, Xbox Live is alot better with it's contents at the moment. But, the PSN is free. That's the most important thing for me. Obiviously, there aren't too many good games out at the moment, considering the horrendous launch. But, give it time and more games will come out by Spring 2007.

There was a Lair interview in either EGM or Game Informer that was practically a love fest with Sony from this guy. It was so obvious that he wouldn't say a single decent criticism about Sony that it turned me off.

I am very interested in Lair. I had it preordered at launch until it got delayed till "sometime next year" about a week before launch. Pretty lame but I will still get it when it comes out.

But I have to say, the guys comments are just riddled with PR speak and it's quite insulting to those of us that actually know the consoles and the industry. To say Sony's online service is similar and in some ways better is an example of why his comments should be taken with a grain of salt.

the Playstation Network is in some ways better than Xbox Live is because it's nowhere near as restrictive as Microsoft's service. Even companies like SquareEnix refuse to utilize Microsoft's network and instead choose to use their own due to strict requirements and lack of control.

Devs who don't have enough experience with creating their own servers can simply use Sony's internal network, while those who want absolutely control over every aspect of their online experience can simple build their own and hook that into the main Hub.

how many other devs for the 360 do nothing but constantly bash anything sony? Actually, it's now this guy and David Jaffe that have praised some of Microsoft's work so far. So 2-0 for respect.

And I'll believe what this guy has to say. Lair looks crazy good. And it even runs in 1080p as his studio's first PS3 game not to mention he's a third party developer.

Besides, no freakin duh this guy is try to sell PS3s, the guy needs to eat too.

None as far as I have seen. Please give examples of 360 devs who _constantly_ bash Sony. Provide names, links or preferable, both.

developers in the long run will surley prefer sony open service...since they want control over their own servers.....one of the major companies that may be attracted to this..Blizzard

should blizzard make a MMORPG [WoW]...this would be interesting.

PSN is sony,s first true online network service....and yet its excellent......you can only think how much will it improve in the next 5 years...XBL have 5years of experience....yes PSN is as good and FREE.
