English study says playing Wii Sports will not keep you slim |
Ó
Playing Nintendo's Wii Sports may be a fun way to get your body moving, but don't expect great results when you use it as a substitute for actual aerobic exercise. According to a recent study conducted by researchers at Liverpool John Moores University, relying on Nintendo's Wii sports alone to keep the fat off won't work.
The English study consisted of six boys and five girls, aged 13-15. Scientists outfitted the children with a monitoring device to calculate their energy expenditure while they played games such as Nintendo's Wii Sports and Project Gotham Racing 3 for 15 minutes each.
The result? While the kids spent more energy playing Wii Sports than playing other games, the energy expenditure amounted to only 60 calories per hour, equivalent to about a quarter of a Mars bar.
The researchers then concluded that a week of so-called "active gaming", the likes of which may be seen while playing games like Nintendo's Wii Sports, only increases energy expenditure by less than two percent - nowhere near as much as playing the sport in real life. Nonetheless, the researchers remarked that games like Wii Sports at least encourage movement and motor control (and, if we may add, healing as well).

no ***** you have to be retarded to think that wii sports would make you skinny if the wii controllers were 15 lb then you might loose a couple of pounds
It's partly the fun factor. People would probably exercise more if running or jogging were as fun as playing Wii games. :)
making people think it will be replacement for excercising in order to make more money off of ppl who are naive enough to believe it really does help.
Despite the name, Nor will the upcoming Wii Fit do anything to help you stay in shape or entertained. It's all marketing gimmicks to give fat and/or dumb people more fake reasons to get something they don't need. Come on, how is standing even considered exercise? At least games like Rock Band and Dance Revolution really do give you a workout, and they are either not available on the Wii or much better on other platforms.
ON much better platforms eh? yeah u do hate nintendo.....well any ways yeah its all about fun! I bet wii fit will change all that.... imean wii sports wasnt even made for weight loss now was it? Wii Fit.......is
If you honestly think Wii Fit is going to help people lose weight by standing there playing little mini games(which is actually what 95% of Wii games are anyway) then maybe you should get outside more often. I'm sorry, but in the real world if people want to lose weight they have to put some effort into it. You can't buy some video game which make you stand in your house all day and expect results. The only thing Wii Fit actually does is exploit the idea of self-image in people to make them purchase it.
While it is obvious that a video game can never be a real world subsitute for actual excercise, I have a little bit more faith that the average person also knows this. While some people might buy this game due to the "self-image exploit", many people are going to buy this because it is something new to try. I don't see what the big deal is anyways, if a game can get you do move around a bit more, or even do push-ups, that's all good. It might be the motivation some some need to actually get off the couch. And to the trolly MCS, while your drumming on Rock Band might move your arms, how is this different than playing Mario/Sonic Olympics? And the DDR comment, about it being better on other platforms is just stupid. YOU JUST MOVE YOUR FEET TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE DANCE MAT WHILE WATCHING THE SCREEN!!! How can this be better on one console but not another?
I do not have a wii but it does have to be a little better for you then just sitting there. But i am not a doctor so what do i know.
