EGM: Wii Online Play "doomed"

Wii online soon? - Image 1

Uh-oh. Looks like all isn't too bright and sunny in Nintendo-ville, as Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) predicts that Wii online play is already "doomed" at this point. Although some may argue that online play has already become a requirement in today's consoles, it may just simply be that it isn't on top of Nintendo's to-do list. After all, from a company who's been known to follow its own drumbeat, it could be expected to head in just about any direction.

According to EGM's article in their latest issue, though,

The Wii's unified friend code system initially seemed like an upgrade to the DS's daft online plan, but it's actually just more of the same nonsense. Once again, each game requires its own separate friend code list...so get ready to input lots of 14-digit codes. Seriously, designing your entire online strategy around preventing child predators simply isn't a good idea.

Hmm... Could it be that this was implemented under the assumption that you wouldn't want to play online anymore, since you spent the whole day playing Wii Tennis with your friends? Or does Nintendo simply need a bit more time to establish its network and facilities before launching its own brand of online play?

friend codes

Who said each game requires its own Friend Code? Are they just referring to Pokemon Revolution's system (which by all accounts appears to be an exception)? Elebits uses the Wii's system code.

In my honest opinion Egm is a ***** magazine, there judging Wii's online when it's not ready yet and there comparing it to XBOX Live or Sony's online service they are a bunch of *****ing dip *****s, EGM can take there magazine and wipe there ass with all of there *****. I don't see anything wrong with the friend code / Wii code deal though so I don't think its doomed.
by - 2007-01-18 13:25:04
I Agree

I just wanted to know if Elebits was an online game, you have answered my question. I also didn't think that you had to use individual friends code to add people.

Too early

Wii's online system is not fully ready and functionnal yet. Why does people always want to rush and predict stuff with no real arguements. And when they created the Miis avatar, I'm pretty sure at least someone over there had the idea to put the miis in online gameplay. In this new technological era, I beleive there is too much people trying to guess and predict than there is people trying to help, research and suggest. Sorry for my english (I usually speak french)

Shut up EGM!!!

EGM is gay... they never say good ***** about nintendo... they always support sony or microsoft. they probably teamed up with gameinformer who refused to put any wii ***** in their issues... but they have issues, cause they have only 8 fingers and 2 thumbs

***** em

I have lost all faith in EGM; "Seriously, designing your entire online strategy around preventing child predators simply isn't a good idea." ***** you guys (EGM), this world is a horrible place for kids sometimes, its nice to see some company put people before profits.

Sad

I find it amazing that you all are attacking EGM for pointing out something that at the moment seems to be true. The Wii has no unified or well planned online capabilities. Is this true? Probably. Nintendo does not have a good history (or any really) of implementing an online environment. Based on what we have now, Nintendo has an amazingly long way to go before it can be considered in the realm of the 360 or even the PS3 for online. Instead of discussing that, you all get insane about attacking the story. So, basically they arguement that I see here is that the EGM article is crap because the Wii was shipped before it was ready. Although this works to defend your attacks, I disagree. I don't consider the Wii unfinished. i just don't think that online was a priority nor is it much of one now. Which is exactly what the story says. The point is, the Wii is an awesome system that has online secondary. Great games, great controllers. The Wii multiplayer is with the people standing next to me. The Wii does not have XBOX live and won't. The sooner you realize that, the easier the pain will pass that the Wii is not all things to all people. But so what? I can fire up Sports and play with a group in the room in a way I could never do with a 360.

OK

I swear some Nintendo fans are like Scientologists... When someone says something negative about them they go nuts and on the offensive (Like Gamespot after the 8.8 on Zelda)... Yes EGM is getting ahead of themselves on this and only really basing this off of Pokemon Revolution... But in all seriousness Nintendo hasent shown us the "light up ahead"... They haven't released any details about an alternative online format or any games that will implement online communities... Its scary and it makes me worry about what will happen with Smash Bros Brawl... Because from what i heard they are having a tough time getting it online and such... And i'll be dammed if i have to keep putting friend codes on it in order to play someone online...

egm

just wanted to point out that each game doesnt need its own code.the wii code is the only code you need for online games.

Elebits

elebits is not an online game, per se. it has online functionality, but is limited. you can create levels and send them to people on your friends list. you can also take in-game screen captures and send the photos to people in your friends list. there is no online multiplayer mode.

Wow

So people complain that the PS online system is piss poor compared to Xbox live and its a perfectly good comparison. But now that they compare Xbox Live to the Wii online system everyone starts complaining just like how Sony fanboys do. This is a valid comparison. Nintendo has had just as much time as Sony to develop an online system from scratch and they butchered it up. Not saying it cant be improved but if your saying you cant compare online systems because of development time then you never will be able to compare because Xbox Live has a 4+ year head start.

ok this article does fail

but you gotta admit its way too *****got to defend the wii the way u are. stop being *****got fanboys.
by - 2007-01-18 19:04:32
online

Xbox Live is near perfect,DS has a great system, but Nintendo's games are for a broader more casual audience and protection for minors is a huge deal. PSP has an online system since day 1 and look how horrible that is. then again, look at the PC,you'd think it'd be stronger than a console or handheld gaming system has.
by - 2007-01-18 19:39:53
sad...

and people are gonna listen to you because you call them "*****got". First of all nobody is gonna listen with the way you said things and secondly what are you even trying to emmly with *****got? Of course the Wii online is bad but you do realise that the system is targeting the non-gamers, both old and young. It would be a dumb idea if Nintendo left the games online capabilities with no restrictions, on a parents point of view, because then many parents will get angry that their kids are being exposed to shyt like the above post. That means Nintendo has to remove some good things on the Wii that gamers normally would love to have. Because it is targeting nongamers, It would be stupid to make the Wii console perfect for the average gamer, because it would be too complicating. Just look at all the comments about how parents and grandparents are playing the Wii because of its simplicity. Who knows how things will be in the end. But retards like you, who play too much games and only talk like that online because of anonymity, just shouldn't deserve to have so many perks in your life, because you don't understand that the world doesn't revolve around you.

nubed?

Whats wrong with PSP's online system? It has been named "best handheld online features" for both gamespot and IGN
by Nohbody - 2007-01-18 20:43:43
^^^

Um thats kinda because its about the only hand held gaming system with actual online abilitys.
by - 2007-01-18 20:52:30
you know...

you only need freind codes if there is a specific person you want to play. otherwise, it's just like any other online community...you are pitted against whoever. i personally cant wait for SSBB tournies on wi-fi...THAT will be l33t...EGM needs to look at the bigger picture, not just at pokemon games...who the hell bases an entire fate of something on a pokemon game anyway?
by - 2007-01-18 21:07:46
Why all of the EGM Haters?

You guys seem to forget that EGM choose the Wii over the PS3 in there launch guide in the previous issue and gave Zelda: TP all 10s. I think EGM is the most unbiased magazine out there. I love my Wii but I agree with EGM that it is stupid to have unique friends codes for each game. The whole child predator phrase is uncalled for though.

PlayStation Online and GCN Broadband

This will be just like the PlayStation Online and the GameCube's Broadband adapter, it will FAIL. Especially with Nintendo barely doing crap to update it, and Sony has it free with a hell of a lot of features, but not as much as Microsoft's.

.......................

I own a PS3, it does have some decent online features. I have played the Xbox360 but havent played on Xbox Live. I have heard many good things about it though, like multitasking while downloading. It would be nice if you could do that on the PS3. Even though there is an expected firmware update to add this. The DS has a wonderful online community, the only game i have that has to use friend codes to be able to communicate is Animal Crossing. I assume theres more but i havent come accross them that actually require it. I want a Wii badly but i have to save up for my second year of college. Almost completly covered but just need a little more. Then i got to be able to find the Wii. I hope it will be a little bit easier to find in the next couple of months. I plan to get it in a month or two. To get down to the internet. I bet nintendo will work out there internet communication with users to make it less of a hassel but to still have "protection". Just look at how well the DS is selling and how every day the online community gets bigger. Nintendo is probably hard at work on it seeing as how they actually care for there customers unlike Micro$oft and $ony.

well

Well we'll probably never know how PS3's online will be; seeing how nobodies buying the damn thing!

elebits

i have elebits and found that i could not transfer the saves onto my SD card. I needed to cause my system was glitchy and nintendo sent me a new one yesterday. so, im gonna have to play the levels all over again. good thing i wasnt far. as for the online features: you win a level in story mode with a high grade of 'S' and you are now allowed to edit that level using the furniture or items found in THAT level. Once you create a level, you can send it to a friend in your FC list. You can also at anytime take a picture of the game(screen grab) and you may send that picture to a friend as well. The level creation-trading capabilites are similar to that of Mario VS DK2 March of the Mini's but you can hold more levels that you create at one time. I really dont mind putting in codes per game so i dont see what the big deal is even if future games are a matter of inputting a few numbers to get going. It also allows you to organize who you want and dont want in your system. eg. if you only want to get Elebits FC's , then you should be able to enter them into a folder for those gamers. Right now, its hard to distinguish who on the wii has elebits and that kind of gets on my nerves.
by - 2007-01-19 20:35:20
ur rite!

Exactly. The PS3 is dead last in sales. But about the guy with college and saving money and stuff, in stead of buying a PS3, you could have bought an xbox360 AND a Wii !! Another baf thing about the PS3 is that it's it REALLY expensive. and in order to fully use ur PS3 u must have an HD tv, and only two-fifths of US households have an HD tv. so its kinda dumb to add the bluray thing cuz it made it $115.00 more expensive. the PS3 is like $800 or $900 or somewhere in between
