EBgames and GameStop using fake Super Smash Brothers ad

Fake SSBB mockup - Image 1In this news article, we point out a rather glaring mistake two popular videogame store chains have made - specifically, using a misleading mockup of an upcoming game's pack shot. The name of the game - Super Smash Brothers: Brawl. The two culprits - EBgames and GameStop.

Of course, it's not really a bad thing. With the daily updates coming from the Smash Brothers Dojo website increasing hype and need for the game each time they reveal new stuff about the title, you'd really want to make sure that you have an eye-catching image for people to know that yes, you can reserve this awesome piece of Nintendo happy before its release date on December 3.

What's bad is that they went ahead and included characters that haven't even been confirmed for the game yet - Ness, Captain Falcon, and Sonic the Hedgehog to name a few. This could very well lead to false advertising - as well as some irate customers after finding out that they've been misled.

One thing EBgames and GameStop could have done, though, was to print images from the updates of Smash Brothers Dojo. They pack more of a graphical punch anyway, seeing as they show the actual game in action. That, or have a pretty employee dress up in a bright blue swimsuit and a blonde wig (if pretty female employee isn't blonde) and cosplay as Samus in her Zero Suit, just to promote the game. That always helps.

How about you, dear reader? What do you think EBgames and Gamestop could have done to promote SSB:Brawl other than using the ad above? Let us know by your comments.

» Hmm...

This could be just another example of false advertising... or maybe GameStop knows a little more that we do? Just an interesting though that came to mind when I saw this.

Gamestop and EBgames are the SAME company.

Maybe they made a mistake in their advertising as easily as you made a mistake in your reporting?

It happens.

» so what if it's fake

i saw a similar cover at a GS im my area, but it was the only one. turns out an employee used Photoshop to make it.

i say good job to the artist, but next time use only characters that are confirmed.

aside from that i guess this one did its job, sure got some body's attention

Do your own marketing tight asses!

» way to over react.

They are the same company, but they can easily still be defined as two popular chains as the names of the store are different, for example Taco Bell and KFC are the same company, but they are different chains.

» pay attention in the store people

If you go into the store and look across the shelves on wii PS3 and 360 you will find that for the games that are NOT out and they want you to 'Reserve' there will be a box that the picture DOESNT match the real game when it comes in... And on that pic it says "now available for reservation" It is JUST a box an artist 'concept' so you will get all 'fired up' to RESERVE the game .. its called marketing all companies do it.. shop around and see.. even 'WAL-Mart' does.

While I've never cared for gamestop one bit (unfortunately, all our EB games turned over to GS a month ago), this isn't that serious. Sonic in SSBB would be nice, but it's not going to alter my decision to reserve it, so it's not like I (or most anyone) would sue if he wasn't in it.
