The ginormous success of the music games Rock Band (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) and Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock have driven up digital music sales of their in-game tracks as well as the albums of the artists.

Rock Band saw a 2.5 million downloads of its in-game tracks through the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live while Guitar Hero 3 saw 5 million downloads since it added downloadable content last November.

But why should distributors stop with just the tracks from their music games? Electronic Arts, for instance, has a bunch of games and franchises with excellent tracks such as FIFA and Madden.

There is a chance we might see this happen. Steve Schnur, worldwide head of music for Electronic Arts, commented at the Consumer Electronics Show that the idea of downloadable tracks for their other franchises is "certainly something we're interested in."

Other games like The Orange Box and Gears of War have already released albums for their soundtracks. It would be sweet if EA decides to offer digital downloads for their in-game tracks from their franchises.

» DLC for the Wii

I just want to hear good news for DLC on the Wii. Nothing yet and still it's one of the best thing that could have happened to games such as rockband and GH3 since you don't have to wait for the next game to get more tracks.

I'd rather have the idea of using MP3 off the memory of the console or the SD card for the other games such as madden. Unless the service was free (buy the game, choose your soundtrack) I find it sad that someone would have to pay again for music he already have just to have it in Madden, then in NHL, then in Fifa Streets...

» dumb idea

The reason it worked on rock band and GH3 is because the music is part of the game, not just a soundtrack.

» 5 years behind

As a general rule, Nintendo is at least 5 years behind the competition. So there won't be downloadable content until 2010 most likely. Things like online, voice chat, dolby digital sound, DVD player, etc. are all behind the times on the Wii.

» If Bioshock's

album was released I'd buy that depending on how much it was ... but Madden? Are you kiddin'?

I was going to say the exact same thing, because for other games you can just play your own music.

» who

needs a dvd player in a game system all its does is make the system coast more money

» maybe...

they are thinking more about PS3 versions of their games....because you'd have to be a real fool to buy songs from them if you have a 360 and 5 different ways to play your own music in games....
