EA dev: Get the 360 and/or Wii

Over at FreeRepublic.com, one of the recent discussions is centered on helping a poster figure out which of the three major consoles in the market he should purchase. It's actually all quite mundane enough, that is, until Electronic Arts game dev Andrew Garett voices out what he really thinks would be a good and a not-so-good choice.

For those who may not be familiar with Garett, he joined the EA ranks back in 2003 and has been working on various titles such as the latest Command & Conquer game. He is also known for his work at his previous studio, Dragonstone Software, where he "developed scientific engines for moving hair and clothes on game characters, and artificial intelligence routines for more than 35 creatures" in the 2002 PS2, PC, GC, and Xbox title, Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair.

Anyway, according to Garett,

Last year, the prediction was that Sony would win the next-gen war, that the PS3 would be the dominant console, just like the PS2 was.

That is no longer the case. The extremely strong performance of the Wii, combined with the miserable performance of Sony has revised pretty much everyone's expectations. Right now, most of us here think the 360 will be on top for this generation, with the battle for second place between Sony and Nintendo (and that's a major shock, as we'd nearly written Nintendo off for the non-handheld market.) Most of us still think Sony will beat off Nintendo, simply due to the older graphics on the Wii, but it's not a sure thing.

My opinion - get the 360 and/or the Wii. Skip the PS3 unless there's a big change in the near future.

Well, EA staff or not, he IS entitled to his own opinion. However, what may be disturbing from another point of view is the fact that a developer - an insider, one who probably knows all the nitty-gritty bits of the consoles better than the rest of us combined - seems to be disappointed with a particular system. For whichever company such a comment may be directed at, many would have already found this to be an alarming signal. However, there may still be hope that comments like this from members of the industry would finally be able to prompt the relevant people to start noticing the proverbial turd in the proverbial punch bowl. Better products also means happier consumers, after all.

Anyone can speculate on who will win but it wont be final until it actually happens. Hearing opinions of so many developers is much more important to pay attention too, but it is still just speculation. But again, they are the creators and they ultimately make the decisions. Hearing Valves Gabe Newell openly burn the PS3 was pretty surprising to me. I for one wouldn't touch Sony's machine with a 500ft pole, and only because of its current position.

EA has always been a multi-platform company. One of the reasons why their games are never as good as other developers.

They had complaints about developing games for the PS2 back when it was released and its no surprise they would do the same here.

EA has always been a company thats had issues with their games since the last generation. It seems that they do their best to make a game for all platforms but ignore the bugs that go along with it.

Their NBA lineup pretty much destroyed half of their following because of bugs they wouldn't fix in all their versions.

Since they gained exclusive rights for their NFL roster, they haven't had any competition to keep them on their toes.

To be honest, so many developers have said so many conflicting things, who knows what's right anymore?

Some devs are saying the PS3 is the best, others are saying 360 and Wii. Who cares? Pick the system you like. If we'd all based our decisions on what devs said, the original XBox would've won last generation because of it's superior hardware.

At the end of the day, I'll be owning all three, so it doesn't matter to me. I'm not letting anyone other than myself influencemy decision to buy a product.

So I take it with a grain of salt.

Vietone is right in the fact that EA has their own issues with serious bugs, questionable treatment of their employees, and even more questionable acquisitions (NFL licenses).

Their other folly is that they have been rehashing their old franchises (Madded, Need for Speec, etc) for all three consoles without any effort in exclusive content, in addition to basically "remaking last year's game" (every EA Sports game).

So, yeah, if EA is complaining or commenting about something on the developmental side, It's not worth listening to.

If these complaints came from Epic or Ubisoft, then I'd take them under heavy consideration.

I think waaaaaaaaaay too many people are getting cold feet. People..THE PS3 HAS ONLY BEEN OUT FOR LIKE 3 MONTHS. How many good games did the 360 have at this time last year? What happens in a few years when PS3 games are 50 Gigabytes and 360 games are still stuck using HD-DVD? On a last note...people always seem to forget, PLAYSTATION AND PLAYSTATION 2 ARE THE ONLY CONSOLES TO EVER SELL MORE THAN 100 MILLION. That's right...more than SNES, more than Genesis, and certainly more than Xbox. Wait people...stay faithful to Sony. Sure right now the PS3 isn't looking too hot but no system does right off the bat. When the 360 dropped everyone was like wow this system blows. Look at it now, it's the best system out right now to have. I love my PS3 but other than Resistance what else does it have more to offer. The PS2/PSP line-up was just as bad and look how they turned out. The PS2 turned into the best selling console ever and the PSP kicked it up about 10 notches over the past year. If Sony were to drop the PSP down to the DS price the PSP would kick the DS's ass big time, check the IGN pole to see yourself. All I'm saying is hold out on the PS3 and wait for the big guns to come out.

GBA - 16,642,250

Europe:

PS2 - 33.22 million

GBA - 17.11 million

America:

PS2 - 43,533,500

GBA - 40,167,000

that's just the three major regions though, but PS2 has sold more than gba and doubt the worldwide numbers would be much different

The war started on the PC and has been going on in the gaming world because games are a competition.

Every industry has its own war but its just not called a war. Every car manufacturer is competing with everyone else and that is a war. Because of the competition everything will advance much faster.

but this opinion make big headlines because is in the

hate-sony line but now from one single EA devel. SONY knows what they are doing, a plethora of good games are coming and surely a cut price as well, meanwhile BluRay Disc kicks HD-DVD ass very hard. Even if PS3 doesnt win this war, SONY will win the HighDef war thats for sure.

I very much doubt the Wii can keep its moment for too long, specially when HD TV becomes more a more widespread, its poor graphics already are very outdated wait a little more, many Japanese will see the PS3 as THE option to have a full HD experience (gaming+movies)

I have all three systems (My son has the Wii). I don't like to wait a year for something to bite my apple. The PS3 has one game and we all know what that is. I am going to sale my 360 just to upgrade to the Zephyr because it is going to rock steady. I have nothing good to say about Sony until next year (The 1 year I have waited). I know that Call of Duty 2, Gun, and Perfect Dark Zero held me ok until the others started flooding out. I also know that in Texas you didn't go to Best Buy in January and seen a stack of 360's when it was released.

Can you answer my question in (Why am I seeing stacks of PS3's at Best Buy in January after the release date). I had to wait till March to get a 360 because the one I waited in line for I sold for 1500 on Ebay. I bet the people who bought those PS3s on Ebay for 2000+ feel sick unless they had the money to fork out like that. I sold the one I got on release date for 2100 on Ebay and then bought one at regular price 2 weeks after Christmas (I came up). I think the PS3 is a better "complete" system (until the Zephyr is released, and I hope I don't have to wait a year for it) but the 360 is a better gaming system right now and with all games pretty much multi-platform (GTA4, VF5, etc...) and with Halo 3 and Gears of War sequels (and rumored World of Warcraft) will continue to be on top. Alot of powerful machines (Dreamcast) was better than the rest of the consoles but didn't make it because of the software (THE MOST IMPORTANT THING). PS3 has 3 or 4 franchises that will keep it afloat and competitive in the market (Killzone is the one I am looking forward too) but when it is all said and done 360 will win this next-gen war.

Agree with Vietone. EA is cross platforming everything. Opinions of the PS3 inside EA aren't going to affect their future line up. They will only stop developing for the PS3 if they can't port title cheap enough with decent return.

EA were starting to look at creating some new IPs and unfortunately I think most of their focus is going to move towards the Wii.

Newly obtained titles like "Mercenaries 2" will definitely be going cross platform sooner rather than later.

EA + Cross Platform

Sony fans would be hoping that these views in this article are not widespread across other publishers in the industry.

I say just wait and see.All consoles have good and bad points,I also think that it will have alot to do with the developers.Having said that doesn't mean that I am siding with the guy from EA and I'm sure someone could go out and find another developer to say that PS3 is a better platform to develop for.I know alot of people go point by point on each console to show the others inferiority,but in the end you get to look at the specs and make up your own mind.Buy one ,buy the other,buy all three who cares!

I'll be here when these games come out, and I'll make sure I play them. If you're very lucky, you might be able to truthfully say they're as good as a recent XBOX 360 offering.

There's lots of great exclusive XBOX 360 games coming, you just don't hear much about them until they're almost finished with MS. $ony has to build up hype early to convince people PS3 isn't going to be the failure it really is. The poor devs are working their arses off to try to meet the hype already generated.

First im sure the major first party teams have had dev kits for soemtime, but all the other companys got devs kits really really late in teh game and some didnt get any at all till now. I have numerouse friends here int eh Bay area that work for companies like, factor five, EA, SOE, and other places. Some friends have just told me they got the dev kits last month. PLUS sony hasnt open up all teh features with the current dev kit firmware yet, ( like they are doing right now) so yes the PS3 has plenty of tiem to show you what it has, you havent seen anythign yet.

so hd dvd for xbox 360 is optional ,guess what that is a great thing becuase not everyone wants hd disc or has a hdtv , also if you do get one it works great and guess what now you have 2 drives (ps3 only has 1 ) this way you can watch dvd and hd dvd on one and games on the other this way there is less wear on the game drive. so for 199+xbox 360 maybe is equal to ps3 price but you get 2 drives not 1 , so is still a better deal, better choice,better games, better online, and downloadable movies, hd content, and iptv coming this year. and even a new xbox with hdmi and 120 gig drive if you need more. options for us to decide not for sony to force it up your ass. Remember Microsoft has billions of dollars to Win this war sooner or later and they are investing way more then Sony is ,times are changing, Atari, then nintendo,then came sony, now Microsofts turn. at best sonys efforts will only match microsoft if they iddnt make mistakes but sony is blowing it and made huge mistakes on price, online, losing exclusives, cell was not needed, and being to *****y. so go get a xbox 360 you wont miss much of what sony may offer that xbox 360cant match and save some cash also.
