EA can't take everything to Wii but will create original titles instead

Electronic Arts, the world's biggest game publisher, is now recognizing the game phenomenon that is the Nintendo Wii and is making leaps and bounds in stepping up to the demands of consumers for even more third-party titles on the leading next-generation platform.

However, EA was quick to stress to everyone that not all of their game franchises will make the jump. Titles built specifically for the Sony PlayStation consoles and the Microsoft Xbox 360 may not fit the game system well, prompting both developers and the publisher to step on the brakes.

Instead of porting titles directly, what EA plans to do is to develop Wii-specific games to ensure that they fit the innovative control scheme and less-powerful graphics features of the console.

"You're not going to see every franchise taken to the Wii. Rather than bring the entire portfolio of titles, some of which won't translate well, we're taking those dollars and making original software," says EA COO John Schappert.

Nintendo Mii characters, by the way, are being considered to be made use if by EA's top execs for use in their titles. Schappert says nothing's final at this point, but they're enthusiastic about the idea.

Videos games are a business. Hardcore games cost a lot of money and don't sell nearly as well as games like Wii Sports judging by current trends. This in theory, will lead companies to dedicate resources and time on similar games instead of putting effort in the "hardcore" titles like FF13 and MGS4. It could even cause them to turn their back on the PS3/360 entirely. So everytime you say that the Wii is good for gaming, think about gaming without FF13, MGS4, Halo 3, GTA4 and make sure you can live without them, because thats what the future will be like if the Wii keeps leaving the other systems in the dust.
