Top in the industry news today is Electronic Arts' John Riccitiello, newly appointed CEO, who has voiced out a call to the industry to drop the franchise spam mechanic and turn to the development of innovative games. This historically marks the first opinion that the 47-year old EA executive has so publicly made known since active appointment in April.

"We're boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play," said Riccitiello, encouraging a new, aggressive approach toward "casual" gaming and new sales strategies. Paying US$ 50 to US$ 60 for 40-hour long game discs that very few players will finish would soon be a thing of the past.

"For the most part, the industry has been rinse-and-repeat. There's been lots of product that looked like last year's product, that looked a lot like the year before," Riccitiello commented. EA's own management had downplayed the idea of undertaking challenges to re-invent or innovate games years before, and the new direction pointed out by Riccitiello is a major departure from the company's own yearly series releases.

Analysts have noted that adoption of the new generation of game consoles or even new hardware for PCs have been slower to date, and Electronic Arts has been suffering a lot more than other major players in the game industry. The return for their research & development into next-gen games has been reciprocated with delay as of late, and speculators eye this as a major problem.

It's not the first time that top brass from a reputable game company has voiced a need for change, but there has yet to be a major entity to grab the torch and lead the industry away from its current direction. Whether or not EA will be that leader, no one can say for sure. But industry analysts speculate a forthcoming industry-wide tremor at the upcoming E3 Media & Business Summit - stirred by Riccitiello's bold words.

# EA doing 'innovative' games??Guest 2007-07-09 13:44
Sounds like crap. EA has a long, LONG history of 'playing it safe' by falling back on their sports titles and the Need for Speed series.

However, if the new guy in charge actually does put pressure on doing 'innovative' games, rather than the crap they keep rehashing, then I wish him and EA the best of luck.

"Paying US$ 50 to US$ 60 for 40-hour long game discs that very few players will finish would soon be a thing of the past"

When Unreal 2 came out, i'm pretty sure it was marked down because it was only 20hrs in length. That was the about the first time i noticed the decline of quality gaming. Now we are lucky to get a game over 10hrs in the ever growing "3d action" genre.

This isn't about EA getting the industry to provide innovative gaming experiences, this is EA attempting to gain momentum behind it's own program of making as much money as possible, as easily as possible. If everyone adopts this idea then EA won't have to justify making *****.

***** you EA. Make me a 40hr game and make it tough. 40hrs equals value for money and you can make tough games without making complicated games. And don't talk about not punishing the player.. the "game over" screen is a *****ing punishment for christ's sake. Focus on making quality games, not fast tracking money into your coffers, *****ers.

They are everything that's wrong with the games industry. Speaking of which, replace "the industry" with "EA" in Riccitiello's speech and you're a lot closer to the truth.

Bring on the smaller devs like Media Molecule who obviously give a shiat about the games they're making.

The Battlefield series is great and I am a huge fan of it, but does anyone else think the latest, 2142, is just a 'mod' for Battlefield 2?

Although I enjoy playing it, it isn't much different to BF2.

So, instead of paying $60 for a 40 hour game that is challenging and fun, I'm supposed to pay $60 for a 10 hour no content no story P.O.S. game that a 5 year old can beat without breaking a sweat? (F)uck this guy!

Riccitiello has bigger problems to deal with, considering how much money EA has lost in the past two years. He should clean his own house before entertaining some grand notion to reform the industry.

what they really need to do is build games that dont like 8 months and touch ups of last years products. innovative games like gears and halo for xbox, resistance and MGS4 for ps3 games that are finished products that will earn them big bucks and still be liked by gamers. not guitar hero and ddr and leave us ral gamers

I've always been awed wide open at how bad EA stuff looks.

It's the hallmark of gaming disgrace !

I hate their whore sports games that has a new version every year.

It looks honesly looks like crap!

And they always make games from movies, which totally looks slapped together and just sucks!

None of their games really made me feel they're passionate about game making. I don't know if they could do a better job, since they have been doing crap for soooo long.

Just my opinion, nothing personal.
