Dyack on one console future: "guaranteed to happen"

Too Human was originally developed for Sony's PlayStation back in 1999 as an action game that spans five discs, before a partnership with Nintendo made Silicon Knights work on it for the GameCube instead.

After a few more years of disappearance, a series of events led SK to the hands of Microsoft to make the game on Xbox 360. Not until recently did the game resurface - the release date still an uncertainty - but we can be sure of one thing: head honcho Denis Dyack knows his console history.

Dyack talked about "one console future" during GCDC 2007 in Leipzig, saying consoles are heading towards commoditization and differences between these gaming machines will become less important. In an interview with GameSpy, he went deeper on his thoughts about improving technology and how the next generation can actually be void of console wars.

"I think that as technologies continue to advance, the advances are becoming so strong that they diminish the differences between each console with each generation," Dyack said. He compared the PlayStation to Nintendo 64, both introducing 3D graphics to households. For him, the difference is getting so small that we will come to a point where there won't be discrimination of any platforms.

Like we play DVDs on any DVD player, he sees the possibility of every game being playable on any platform. No exclusives. "Everyone's been saying for the longest time that 'it's all about the games.' If it's really all about the games, then the games will start to dominate, and the value of the hardware will become less and less important," he said.

All these may sound convenient, but he found a lot of bad from "commoditizing" in the gaming industry. "Commoditization is a very bad thing, because the ultimate result of it is slavery," he said.

It won't be surprising if many find his speculations farfetched, but Dyack is quite confident with his words. He was able to say, with confidence, that "predicting the future is hard." He continued, "But one of the things about technology and commoditization is that it's guaranteed to happen one hundred percent."

But it's unlikely.

Nintendo always make profits but high end gaming machines rely on loss leaders. That would have to change, i.e. We decide to stop being cutting edge.

Sony would want to control all the hardware and it's formats.

MS, well they want to leverage and focus on their Windows platforms. Oh, and they hate Sony.

this console was going to happen last gen and it was called THE PHANTOM..it was purple and shaped like a helmet, it was supposed to play all three system games...............

but there is a console called the YOSHIE BOX that was built to have every game system ever up to the ps2 xbox and gamecube..........it looked like a slightly huge computer tower with LOTS of slots,..........it was whilte.......it was worth $3000

or $5000.............some where........my cousin got one for a while from the MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION.....cause he had cancer and we liked to play games

i would buy that Yoshie Box just caused it looked like a cool Dream-Cast styled computer

Wont happen simply because no company would want to divide their value like that. I could probably see Sony and MS coming together but thats highly unlikely. Nintendo is pretty strong on its own with its own unique licenses so they would have no reason to merge or anything like that. Also it would be illegal to have a system that could play any consoles game what you speak of is hopeless idiot dreams.

1)Developers have different ideology when it comes to making games.

2)There are many different types of gamers. Its impossible to cater to all of them with one system.

3)One company can't have the resources to cater to all the gamers. Their creativity will be burned and we will just get mediocre games.

4)Developers will get lazy and give us over priced half a**ed games.

5)In order to create a system that has everything, it will be too expensive. Hardcore gamers will be willing to pay a lot of money but not casual gamers.

6)It might be too complex for the developers and users.

The market will shift from cutting edge hardware to cutting edge media. As they predict, as new consoles emerge, all manufacturer's will automatically default to the best current technology. That will pretty much put them on par with one another.

The market leader will then be defined by the media format with the fastest data transfer rate and the largest storage capacity.

Of course, in that reality.. Nintendo had better get their shiz together. They're lagging about a decade behind at this point.

its possible, microsoft is working on it right now, can't go into details though quite a bit of information and will fly over a lot of your heads and I will get alot of backlash from fanboys, I will say this though time will tell if it will work for microsoft but if it does nintendo and sony will have to go along with it or stop making consoles.

This is the biggest bunch of BS I've heard this week.

How far does this guy stretch his THEORY?

According to his theory (by now) there should be no exclusive features on cell phones, PCs, TVs, phones, cars, radio, light bulbs....

This guy fails. Reality proved him wrong the instant he opened his mouth.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! !!!!! 100%??? Then why hasn't it happened yet with anything else?

There's one important aspect that this ignorant tech-know-nothing hasn't grasped yet. Free Enterprise drives innovation. Free Enterprise creates compitition which drives us to atain newer, bigger and better inovations.

If what he says were to ever come true, we would find ourselves coming to a screeching halt with no new innovative products hitting the shelves. In order for these consoles to maintain a common ground there would be no way for multiple/various companies to ever develope a better common ground. If they tried, who would decide which ideas were better? OOPS!!! We just went back to Free Enterprise. No one "needs" to decide. That's our freedom. Darn it! We can't even play along with his theory for any length of time without finding major holes in it.

Someone tell this guy to take his BS Communist theories and shove them where the sun don't shine!
