Dragon Quest IX in Development - But Which System? |

Dragon Quest is arguably the most popular series in Japan. So popular that a law was made stopping Enix (and now Square Enix) from launching the game on a weekday. Why? Well, when one of the games launched (Dragon Quest II I believe), children skipped school and adults skipped work just to buy it. Not only that, children were also mugged by teenagers for it. Dragon Quest XIII for the PS2 sold 3 million copies in the first few weeks in Japan alone. Now, it seems Dragon Quest IX is in development.
"'[Series producer] Yuji Horii is really busy at the moment on Dragon Quest IX, and I'm really looking forward to what kind of game he's making this time, as a gamer.' Perhaps Mr. Sugiyama was not authorized to say this; he is, however, 75 years old, so let's cut him a break."
Woah. What a slip! Now, in most cases people would just assume that the game would be on the PlayStation 3. However, a few little things have started to change people's faith. Firstly, Satoru Iwata (President of Nintendo) has a very good relation with Horii. So strong in fact that Horii was one of the first people to try out the WiiMote prototype. Also, check out some of his comments.
"Horii has commented that 'graphics can't get that much better' than Dragon Quest VIII, and as long as the Wii is slightly more powerful than a PlayStation 2, it would be 'enough' for Dragon Quest IX. Hopefully it will be powerful enough to render the terrain textures so that they look like Akira Toriyama's manga landscapes"
"Yes, Yuji Horii said that the graphics in VIII were very, very close to what he always dreamt they should look like."
Basically, he feels like DQVIII is how his games should look. He just wants a great way of showing off Toriyama's artwork when it comes to graphics. However, PS3-only fans shouldn't give up hope just yet. Square Enix might still be wary of putting Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest on two different systems. They are the two biggest franchises in Japan and it could cause a split in their fanbase. However, if Dragon Quest IX goes to the Wii, then expect a big shift in the Japan console market.

That's a REALLLY good news for me, that's for sure =D
I think square-enix will never make a xbox 360 game because there games are super popular in japan and less than 40 000 x360 were sold from the start there.. ( in one year... ) So I'd say DQ9 is on the ps3!
So the wii have it's own dragon quest game because it's special and all, and the ps3 ( biggest fanbase in japan ) will have dragon quest 9.
It's a super great news 'cause I'll buy a ps3 with final fantasy 13, so with dragon quest 9 also, it's a great news =D ( DQ8 was awesome, took me 73 hours to finish the game with the best ending, I finished hte last boss for normal ending at lvl 34 =D )

Don't fret Wii fans, I am sure the Swords game will be great.

Whoa, Dragon Quest XIII came out on the PS2, before Dragon Quest IX which is for an undisclosed platform?
Did someone divide by zero, because I see a time paradox!
Honestly people, when you post a damn article, proofread and don't make yourself look stupid.

this is one series which neither company (sony vs nintendo) can afford to lose... just think what it would mean to one system's popularity over another...
either way the next gen consoles will make dq9 great, whether it's ps3 with insane gfx and bluray (ie enormous enormous game) and hdd (downloadable stuff?)... or the wii, with that wiimote...
i can see some really spanking good games coming to us in the future, and we'll all benefit. dq9 is going to be well important . nuf said

the wii graphics processor uses a special technology that makes cell shaded games look amazing. the creator of dragon quest is best friends with the president of nintendo.
the creator or dragon quest says he wants production time to be short, unlike the 4 year wait between VII and VIII. ps3 doesn't offer short production times, however the Wii does.
also the creator of dragon quest loved the way VIII looked and said that all he wanted to do for IX was just barely upgrade the graphics because he loves the art style of the guy that worked on VIII.
alot of stuff is pointing to the fact that this could easily be a Wii game. i wish people would look into information before they open there mouth and say there isn't a chance of it happening. how uninformed sony has made fanboys.

(note: Not the 360 of course)

You guys think that load times will dissappear? Many PS2 games had long load times and it was just a DVD....now the PS3 has to read BR content. I'm just assuming this but...I would imagine the load times will actually increase.

Go ahead and tell me not to open my mouth, but you should take your own advice and give up Nintendo already. And quit fooling yourself that any good games are going to be on the Wii. And DQ9 on the Wii is a total joke.

enjoy spending your $600 for a barely upgraded ps2 with a bluray player or your xbox 1.5 its not like the other consoles have anything to brag about. at least the Wii isn't the same old thing. you know, same game slightly better graphics, over and over and over, it is getting so old already.
