Dragon Quest IX in Development - But Which System?

DQVIII

Dragon Quest
is arguably the most popular series in Japan. So popular that a law was made stopping Enix (and now Square Enix) from launching the game on a weekday. Why? Well, when one of the games launched (Dragon Quest II I believe), children skipped school and adults skipped work just to buy it. Not only that, children were also mugged by teenagers for it. Dragon Quest XIII for the PS2 sold 3 million copies in the first few weeks in Japan alone. Now, it seems Dragon Quest IX is in development.

"'[Series producer] Yuji Horii is really busy at the moment on Dragon Quest IX, and I'm really looking forward to what kind of game he's making this time, as a gamer.' Perhaps Mr. Sugiyama was not authorized to say this; he is, however, 75 years old, so let's cut him a break."

Woah. What a slip! Now, in most cases people would just assume that the game would be on the PlayStation 3. However, a few little things have started to change people's faith. Firstly, Satoru Iwata (President of Nintendo) has a very good relation with Horii. So strong in fact that Horii was one of the first people to try out the WiiMote prototype. Also, check out some of his comments.

"Horii has commented that 'graphics can't get that much better' than Dragon Quest VIII, and as long as the Wii is slightly more powerful than a PlayStation 2, it would be 'enough' for Dragon Quest IX. Hopefully it will be powerful enough to render the terrain textures so that they look like Akira Toriyama's manga landscapes"

"Yes, Yuji Horii said that the graphics in VIII were very, very close to what he always dreamt they should look like."

Basically, he feels like DQVIII is how his games should look. He just wants a great way of showing off Toriyama's artwork when it comes to graphics. However, PS3-only fans shouldn't give up hope just yet. Square Enix might still be wary of putting Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest on two different systems. They are the two biggest franchises in Japan and it could cause a split in their fanbase. However, if Dragon Quest IX goes to the Wii, then expect a big shift in the Japan console market.

» ummmm

It should go to PS3. Sony will have to do everything they could on their hand for that to happen. If they loss the best RPG's and other games that create a good fanbase for Sony, will be bad news for them.

» I wouldn't mind it on the wii

Dang a law that it can't come out on a weekday!

by yes please - 2006-08-18 09:35
» Wii for sure

It should deffinatly come out for the wii best rpg on the best console! This is an easy answer. Even Horii himself doesn't care about the graphical power of the ps3 for this particular title seeing that VIII was the best it comes he feels for this title and wii can do that no prob

» super great news =D

dragon quest 9? so I suppose the one on wii is separate? dragon quest and something with towers and mirrors is the only one one wii so.

That's a REALLLY good news for me, that's for sure =D

I think square-enix will never make a xbox 360 game because there games are super popular in japan and less than 40 000 x360 were sold from the start there.. ( in one year... ) So I'd say DQ9 is on the ps3!

So the wii have it's own dragon quest game because it's special and all, and the ps3 ( biggest fanbase in japan ) will have dragon quest 9.

It's a super great news 'cause I'll buy a ps3 with final fantasy 13, so with dragon quest 9 also, it's a great news =D ( DQ8 was awesome, took me 73 hours to finish the game with the best ending, I finished hte last boss for normal ending at lvl 34 =D )

» The Wii is getting the DQ Swords and PS3 is getting this title

This will be announced at the Tokyo Game Show.

Don't fret Wii fans, I am sure the Swords game will be great.

» Dragon Quest XIII, huh?

"Dragon Quest XIII for the PS2 sold 3 million copies"

Whoa, Dragon Quest XIII came out on the PS2, before Dragon Quest IX which is for an undisclosed platform?

Did someone divide by zero, because I see a time paradox!

Honestly people, when you post a damn article, proofread and don't make yourself look stupid.

» PS3= Dream system for the series!

The PS3 would be the dream system for this series. THe PS3 would be able to emulate the Manga style almost exactly, smoothing out character and world models way past what VIII did on the PS2 and it's load times would be almost NIL.

by comedy - 2006-08-18 10:30
» yeah, i'd like it to be on ps3

but sony would have to do some SERIOUS brown nosing to get in on that!

this is one series which neither company (sony vs nintendo) can afford to lose... just think what it would mean to one system's popularity over another...

either way the next gen consoles will make dq9 great, whether it's ps3 with insane gfx and bluray (ie enormous enormous game) and hdd (downloadable stuff?)... or the wii, with that wiimote...

i can see some really spanking good games coming to us in the future, and we'll all benefit. dq9 is going to be well important . nuf said

Stupid people think because you have more hardware you can't do something for that with less details, textures and so on. Is like saying you cant have notepad on a supercomputer because is too simple. A classic RPG will not need to use a wii controller for nothing. Just Sony have to battle to not let games like that go away, like happened to Nintendo with Final Fantasy Series.

by SteveTao - 2006-08-18 16:12
» Let's See...

Square will always put it's biggest franchises on the PS3. That includes Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Enough said.

by juanito - 2006-08-18 16:17
» that has been talked about before

egm had a rumor two issues ago i believe, and they had inside information or something. it said that if any of the dragon quest games on wii or ds did well then dq IX would be exclusive to wii. and if the creator of dragon quest doesn't care about graphics then that rumor is even more likely to be true, because the Wii will be more affordable, and if dq ix is going to come out very soon then it would provide the easiest access to the game, if it was on the wii. so this is the second runor that hints that it could be coming to the wii, i think these rumors are becoming more credible.

by somedude - 2006-08-18 19:34
» Aww man who *****in cares??

s'long as im buying both the ps3 and the wii, who cares which console any game is on as long as it's on 1 of these 2? I mean my main thing is getting a ps3 but the wii is like what? 200$?? c'mon.. it's not even money..

by DDRnoKamisama - 2006-08-18 22:28
» you all fail to realize

since Square and Enix are now one company they want to get the most profit together. IF DQIX comes out before FFXIII then it can come out either Wii or PS3. But if FFXIII comes out first then FFXIII will sell enough PS3 that DQIX has to go on PS3 because people who plays FF will most definitely play DQ. And if they try to place all their main RPGs on one platform then they don't have to worry about which system they should release their games for. Spliting the games on two different consoles is like spliting your profits.

Of course this doesnt apply to MULTI-platform games.

by ssj3fox - 2006-08-19 02:57
» Both?

The screenshot comes from the PS2 game. The GameCube is more powerful then the PS2 and Wii is more powerful then a Xbox. If you look at Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 you can see you don't need a cell processor to have some thing that looks like Akira Toriyam-san's art. Dragon Quest started on a Nintendo console. I see no good reason for it not coming to Wii. I believe it will be made for Wii and PS2 to keep cost low and make everybody happy. If Wii sales are good in Japan (as all evidence points to) I am sure it will be put on Wii.

by YourWiiSucks - 2006-08-19 05:01
» Wii lol

The Wii couldn't even do 8 because its so stupid wimpy. Square Enix isn't even close to stupid enough to put 9 out on that. This rumor is getting out of hand. What a lie.

by juanito - 2006-08-19 08:31
» another stupid sony fanboy

for one if you don't know the final specs, then don't open your mouth and call the wii wimpy because you have no clue, and make yourself sound like a 5 year old girl.

the wii graphics processor uses a special technology that makes cell shaded games look amazing. the creator of dragon quest is best friends with the president of nintendo.

the creator or dragon quest says he wants production time to be short, unlike the 4 year wait between VII and VIII. ps3 doesn't offer short production times, however the Wii does.

also the creator of dragon quest loved the way VIII looked and said that all he wanted to do for IX was just barely upgrade the graphics because he loves the art style of the guy that worked on VIII.

alot of stuff is pointing to the fact that this could easily be a Wii game. i wish people would look into information before they open there mouth and say there isn't a chance of it happening. how uninformed sony has made fanboys.

by ssj3fox - 2006-08-20 02:39
» Wii can't do 8?

The Gamecube could do 8 easy. It's more powerful then a PS2... Also more sources are saying the Wii is more powerful then the Xbox...

(note: Not the 360 of course)

the Ps3's load times will be very big, way bigger than wii's...although most people can't quite grasp that. Nintendo has told developers it wants every game to take less than 3 seconds to start up.

You guys think that load times will dissappear? Many PS2 games had long load times and it was just a DVD....now the PS3 has to read BR content. I'm just assuming this but...I would imagine the load times will actually increase.

Well your a Nintendo fanboy that settles for junk instead of the very best. We know the specs for the Wii and your just in denial that its going to suck so bad.

Go ahead and tell me not to open my mouth, but you should take your own advice and give up Nintendo already. And quit fooling yourself that any good games are going to be on the Wii. And DQ9 on the Wii is a total joke.

by juanito - 2006-08-24 16:47
» hahahahahahaha

i take it your a sony fanboy, can you name any good games that are launching with the PS3? can you name a decent game even on the 360 that is only on the 360?

enjoy spending your $600 for a barely upgraded ps2 with a bluray player or your xbox 1.5 its not like the other consoles have anything to brag about. at least the Wii isn't the same old thing. you know, same game slightly better graphics, over and over and over, it is getting so old already.
