Doctors find skin disorder caused by too much gaming, Sony responds |
Forget Wii knee or whatever you call it. Doctors now have something new to watch out for when dealing with gamers: the PlayStation palmar hidradenitis, a skin disorder caused by excessive use of consoles.
The condition was found in the case of a12-year-old girl in a Swiss hospital. She had intensely painful sores on the palms of her hands.
It's believed that the sores come from playing too much video games. She recently started playing on her PlayStation console for several hours a day. She continued to play even after the sores showed. The doctors suspect that the problem was caused by
tight and continuous grasping of the console's hand-grips, and repeated pushing of the buttons, alongside sweating caused by the tension of the game.
No danger of seeing health warnings from the surgeon general on console boxes though. The disorder is already a known condition called "idiopathic eccrine hidrantetis," a condition associated with intense sweating, and typically found on the soles of feet in children who do heavy physical activity.
This is just the first time the condition was observed to affect only the hands, which is why it was specially dubbed the PlayStation palmar whatsitentis. Nina Goad of the British Association of Dermatologists remarked about the case:
If you're worried about soreness on your hands when playing a games console, it might be sensible to give your hands a break from time to time, and don't play excessively if your hands are prone to sweating.
And what does Sony have to say about it? An SCEE spokesman said:
We firmly believe that video gaming is a legitimate entertainment pastime like watching movies, listening to music, or reading books. As with any leisure pursuit there are possible consequences of not following common sense, health advice and guidelines, as can be found within our instruction manuals.
PlayStation was launched in 1995 and has sold hundreds of millions of consoles over the last 13 years. We do not wish to belittle this research and will study the findings with interest. This is the first time we have ever heard of a complaint of this nature.
So use your noggins, gamers. If your hands are starting to get sores, then it's time to put the controller down.

Good response $ony.
OH FUCCKKK NOWH IM SELLING MY PS3!
YEAH!! like u have it.
1) Nice response Sony. Pwned. 2) Seriously, just wow. I've been gaming since the 90s and haven't had any sores. Obviously all games and systems come with safety guidelines and warnings, so you're stupid to keep playing if you feel any pain from playing.
As long as the family doesn't try to pull any lawsuits. It'd be like suing an axe or hammer manufacturer because you got blisters from hammering something for 5 hours straight.
bring back the controller with the built in fan!
Nintendo Thumb??? After hours of playing the NES your tumbs were like hamburger meat!!! That sh1t hurt for days and even more when you refused to stop playing! :D
now they will also have to give response if i hang someone up with the usb cable provided..
haha, make it look like an accident, almost die and sue Sony.. oh wait thats fraud
punch 2 the guts....i have similar symptoms from playing 2 much street fighter lV n sad to say i just kept on jamming the heck out of that controller...must work on timing skills
my hands sweat like a leaking pipe.....2 much action with sf4
I know that as street fighter thumb from playing it on the psone (and now its reborn with sfiv)
i dont think sony should be responsible for what the consumers do with their products and thats a good response from sony!
Obviously SONY is so bent out of shape about it because the Playstation 3 gives you AIDS. Why else does everyone who owns a PS3 have AIDS? Sony just got caught sodomizing the customer once again. Auto Immune Deficiency, Sony.
I did get bad blisters on my left thumb from playing the Sega Dreamcast. Not cos I was playing it all that much (hardly touched my DC in years and was never that keen on it when I did play it) but because the D-pad on those damn crappy joypads stuck out so much and was relatively 'sharp' on the edges compared to other systems controllers.
At least it doesn't give you hairy palms, you know like ... I mean, huh, nevermind!
I Play 7 hours on weekdays on my PS3 and 14 hours ON the Weekend But I Dont Get Sore Ive Been Playing Since I was 2 =P Im 14 PSN: eddynightmare
like how sony said its common sense for u 2 stop playin if ur hurtin but if ur addicted to somethin then thts a different story *COUGH ps2,ps3,360,psp COUGH*
'Atari Middle-finger'? --I used to play Atari 2600 enough that I'd have a callous on my right middle finger (like on my left hand, which I write with) from pushing those rather stiff 2600 joysticks. :-O If I recall, I'd sometimes have scrapes on the lower fingers to, from pushing against the base. Not to mention, those hard-click orange fire buttons could really put the wear on your thumb! .....By comparison, a Sixaxis/Dualshock is luxurious.
i haven't hurt myself on a game controller since mk1, damn test your might... oh man the blisters i got from trying to break diamond.
the only times I had sores when a friend of mine got soul calibur for the dreamcast when it first came out, we played vigorously against each other and eventually got blisters on our hands. oh that game and street fighter alpha 3 for playstation. good ol times.
I've never had a problem with it either, but the manuals for all games and the consoles say "take a 15 minute break after every hour of play" and "if you begin to feel dizzy/lightheaded/sore etc stop playing immediately" They're not joking, if you start to feel pain just stop playing for a little bit, the game isn't going anywhere. Dumb kids + the parents who apparently just let them sit there for hours on end Doesn't come close to the stupidity of the people who died playing WoW tho lol
illegally using the Playstation brand name in the most negative way ever. when i was young i use to have sore hands due to faulty Nintendo Family Computer (NES) controllers but i never complain, i just rest in few days, and clean the innards of the controller! but since 1994 when i got my PS1 i doubled my gaming hours and never felt the hand aches i used to have with NES controllers. and to the swiss girl please take a bath everyday, yeah thats where you got those sweaty feeling. lol
arcade stick.
isnt putting the electric fan near you instead of hoping for something not readily available much easier?
DEAR GOD!!! GET A *****ING LIFE!!
Clean your controller! It helps get rid of the sticky sweat off the controller
I've never had this problem and I play for like 6 hours a day constantly. My hands will sweat for no real reason, but not enough to slicken any controller or give me sores. And yeah, it is some serious common sense that playing too much is bad and that if your controller hurts your hands to stop playing the f***king thing and rest. Damn Sweed, The $ony controller is like the 3rd best controller (with the 360 being the first of course) and you've made it seem like it impacts your health in a negative way, take a damn break now and then and go to cooler areas jeez. I have yet to play a game that is "so intense" that "sweat pours out". The only thing that can possibly be considered for that is DDR for obvious reasons.
On MSN news (which is owned by Microsoft for those who didn't know lol), they posted this article, http://tech.uk.msn.com/news/article.aspx?cp-documentid=14542217 and I just find it amusing how they didn't include the bit, "PlayStation was launched in 1995 and has sold hundreds of millions of consoles over the last 13 years. We do not wish to belittle this research and will study the findings with interest. This is the first time we have ever heard of a complaint of this nature."
no its....... DEAR GOD!!! GET A F-UC-KING GIRL FRIEND YOU F-UC-KING VIRGIN!!!!
bad times... bad times.
yeah dude, those loosers that died playing WoW were total retards. im not trying to be mean or disrespectful but.. if you die from being too addicted to a video game.. you may have deserved it >_> the only injuries iv gotten from videogames was when i was little playing mario party on the N64. when u did the mini games where you rotate the analoge it would take some skin off your palm lol
.. if you werent a virgin when u wer 14 id like to shake your uncles hand and tell him to giv it to u harder next time.
Where is this girls parents? Who plays several hours on a PS3, gets sores, and still continues to play!? This girl is a moron. Anybody who plays games enough that intense needs to find something better to do with their time.
