DVD: something the Wii lacks... for now. - Image 1While the bookies announced low odds for Nintendo announcing DVD movie playback details in this coming GDC, a Go Nintendo went straight to the source. According to Go Nintendo's post, Nintendo emailed the reader back regarding his questions about Wii-DVD. And here, by bullet point, are the details:
  • While officially announced, the Big N insists it won't be unveiling any specific details about it, like release dates and price, until "somewhere in the latter half of 2007." (Nintendo already gave the "latter half of 2007" line in its original PR with Sonic Solutions)
  • The DVD playback-enabled Wii will (definitely) be more expensive than the original version, though.
  • And it won't be an add-on attachment. (Which may also imply that "neither" will there be add-on attachments for existing Wiis).
  • Speaking of existing Wiis, Nintendo makes mention of the launch Wii as "the best (and more affordable) choice" for gamers with a DVD player at home.
    • We here don't know whether this will translate to a two SKU production run (launch Wii and DVD Wii), although we think this means that any reference to a DVD-Wii will reside in the coming new Wii, and the launch Wii probably won't be seeing any DVD-related upgrades.
Of course, there's always putting the DVD in an SD card... but you're still going to need an SD card and a couple of other things in the first place.

» HD Upgrade?

Is there any possibility of Nintendo making the new version support greater HD Quality?

So far we know wii can do 480p...and i am sure wii can do 720, but nintendo haven't officially announced it.

» hey i care

it will make some jaggie games less painfull to watch. u dont care cause you cant afford HD. if you had HD at home, you would not reject HD for a sec. you do know the wii has hidden HD in its GPU, or was it the CPU? anyways, it has it but they say its not that good but i sure the next gen for nintendo will have it. have you noticed how the game box does not tell you up to what resolution the game is soported in? i bet the games go way up to 1080 or something. though the system cant at the moment, the games are sure ready, i think.

» hd, no

there probably won't be hd content on wii because the graphics processing for it will require 3-6 times the computing power depending on 720p or 1080p. Neither will you see hd-dvd content, because that would double the price of the wii. However, it certainly is possible. a 3rd party might develop a pretty, but computing-power-light game, and convince nintendo to update the firmware to display it in hd - i stress possible. Much more likely, we'll see an hd-dvd-wii released in 2009, around the time hdtv's become commonplace and hd-dvd drives cost
