David Perry: the magic of the Wii wont last; PS3 to catch up |

David Perry is a man to listen to. He's got the resume to beat: 25 years of making games, Earthworm Jim, MDK, Messiah, a seat in the Advisory Board at the Game Developers Conference - all that stuff. So it isn't surprising that when the man speaks about games, it's like dogma. And dogma can be scary. In a recent interview with Disposable Media, Perry talked about the appeal of the Wii. It's practically the fastest selling console right now, with its appealing graphics and interactive interface. But David Perry thinks that the magic won't last. In time, better innovations will come, and with it, better interfaces and graphics power.
The Wiimote is fun, there's no doubt about it. What other controller offers more fun than being able to swing your virtual bat in real life? However, Perry doesn't believe the Wii achieves the end-all and be-all of interactivity. "The Nintendo Wii isn't the final solution to that sort of interactive interface," he said, "I think we'll always see more and more interesting approaches to interface".
Interface isn't the only thing that sells in the gaming industry, though. "The fact is, gamers are attracted to beautiful looking games, they always have been," said Perry. "When a game comes out - a game like Halo or something, something they haven't seen before - they'll drop everything and they'll drop their Wii controllers when it does."
Fortunately, the Wii has nothing to worry about yet. Perry himself admits that the PS3 still hasn't reached its potential. He says that "the machine hasn't succeeded yet in what it can deliver." With its high price tag and difficult programming among the factors hampering its climb to the top, the PS3 can't be considered a major threat. But "it's only a matter of time before the PS3 starts achieving what it offers to consumers."
So what do you think reader? Is the Wii an evolutionary dead end, or a first step in the right direction? Let us know what you think through your comments. For the entire interview, click on issue #8 after the source link.

The Wii isn't an evolutionary step period. Its got an interesting controller. One that barring licensing issues could be used on any other system just as easily. Its the most pathetic thing in the world to assume that innovative interfaces are mutually exclusive to good graphics.

or wait.. How can you graphically visualize "TIME"?
beats me..

It will never have these "high end", "jawdropping" games. Games like;
- Final Fantasy XIII
- Final Fantasy Versus XIII
- The Last Remnant
- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
- Tekken 6 etc...

By forcing the controls on the developpers, Nintendo assures that most games will make use of the motion sensing Wii Remote.
Sure the technology is not that advanced but unless it is mandatory on a system, it will just become another gimic like the Eye Toy.

- The Wii is fun. People can disect the differences between the different consoles and PC games, but in the end, while the Wii my lose in other areas, it is always described as 'fun'. And isn't that the whole point?
- Developers are now supporting the Wii because it makes the most business sense. The Wii will soon be the most distributed console. The games cost a 1/3 to make. The games take 1/3 of the time to bring to market.
By the time Sony or Microsoft ovecome these two hurdles, Nintendo will be ready to publish its next generation Wii, which I'm sure will fix some of the short comings it may currently have.

" Nintendo is not ramping up production in order to make it hard to get. It's a marketing strategy that's fooling everyone.", is that a fact? Rumour often never come true and from any manufactures point of view, making 9 million consoles is a bit of a demand and strain.

The 360 is doing alright due to the great games that its finally releasing. Remember when the 360 first launched, the first great game for it was oblivion, then the other great games took a while to come out.
With the ps3, its still in the early processes of making games. I mean common we gave the 360 a year to start coming out with great games, why not give the ps3 the same amount of time.
Also the nintendo wii didn't have amazing games either when it first got released. "no wii sports is not an amazing game, its just a demo bundled with the system."
All consoles start off slow, its just nintendo wii has the easy use and cheap price going to it. All the consoles will do fine and the market is big enough for three consoles.

Wii is more like a console for non-gamers, not casual ones.

haha...

Among hardcore gamers, yeah, I don't think it will stay that popular, as there are not many hardcore games on it....but nintendo knew that...and the casual/kiddie/non/ gamer market is probably 10 times as large as the hardcore gamer market....

People should just quit complaining and have fun playing whatever style games they like and encourage others to do the same. The constant dogging of other consoles is annoying.

Also "great" is a subjective term, so just because you don't think it had good games at launch, doesn't mean other people think that way.....same with Wii, lot's of people criticize it's games, but not everyone is you, and tastes differ....

ill give you an example. during e3 2006 or 2005 I cant remember mr. miamoto was talking about the heart of the gamer, as he was talking he eventually showed pics of when he was a kid, talking about his story on how he became a gamer, I dunno about you, but nintendo looked desperate, I mean come on, do you see sony showing pics of baby phil harrison, NO! they show frickin hardcore power, they dont make it look like a family business, when I talked to my friends about the wii one day on how they liked it, I hear them talk about how sony is a mean business, and nintendo cares for us, look I dunno the whole detail on why the wii is so popular right now, but this is something I think about in my head every now and then, all I gotta say is nintendo is good at luring you into this there hardware. Very good.

And on that, i agree with the article, the wii isn;t going to last. I give it another 1 or so.

Shatterdome why did you have to make a fanboy statement like that for. Who knows maybe the full potential of the ps3 is 4-D, we will have to wait and see.

Though just wait for 08 the ps3 will start to shine, ps3 is a slow movement, just like the xbox was but after a year it got some great titles, i wouldn't be surprise if the sales rockets for ps3., in a few months,

Nintendo is luring you into Outdated hardware, they stole that wii remote stuff from immersion. XBox can't make a working console and ps3 well all good with them except price and lack of games. I say go with sony, cause one xbox is a faulty system and wii is a fad, sony ps3 is a next generation powerful system.

Until they get a larger variety of games on their consoles, the ps3 and x-box are both better values. Even with their steep price tags. When the wii gets games that I like, that aren't already done better on other systems, then I might change my opinion of it.
I used to joke with my friends, "...eventually they're going to come out with Mario in Space."

-Legend of Zelda Series
-Mario Galaxy
-Super Smash Bros Brawl
-Metroid Series
-Soul Calibur Legends
The Wii may just be a fad and will wear off, but you know what? That what consoles are! They are fads you play them, next gen comes out, you play that! Whoop-deedoo!
The Wii is affordable and fun and an advancement in technology. Not the PS3, the size and price of you're house! As technology advances, things become cheaper and more portable, the Playstation gets bigger and more expensive.
XBox 360 has owned the PS3 into the next dimension, and the Wii has sold over half as many units as the 360 in a quarter of the time! The PS3 is dead, it has no hope. It's fancy graphics and lobbed on DVD players aren't going to save it.
Out of all this arguements o nthis page, th PS3 ones are pathetic.
'The Wii is a fad!'
How is it a fad? Because it's innovative? Does being creative mean it's a fad?
'The PS3 is more powerful!'
And what does it use this power for? Playing overpriced blu-ray and sucking up you're money.
'Wii copied the motion sensory idea!'
The PS3 has stolen the following:
Spider-man font.
Second Life (Turned it into Home)
Motion Sensory from the Wii (That 6-axis thing, 6-axis is craptacular anyway, the Wii works in 3-D motio sensory)
Mamma Mia thatsa biga rant!

And yes, there are only 3 dimensions to any object and reality, that is why that statement by Ken was ridiculous....
There are some theories on the 4th dimension, but it's not a scientific fact by far....

motion sensing allows motion, speed, and accuracy... it allows a person to point at something on screen and a cursor would go to that...
tilt sensing moves something as a whole... you tilt the controller and as a result, something on screen will tilt with it...
the technology is totally different for both... get ur facts straight before you say things...
i have both a wii and ps3.. i like how the wii revolutionizes fps, and allows a new type of control...
the ps3 revolutionizes vehicle driving in game it will also revolutionize rpgs (i've played the japanese folklore demo and i have to say yanking the souls out of enemies is a neat trick) and also first and third person shooters as it'll let us duck behind cover, then all we have to do is tilt the controller to peak around cover to fire... it allows more fluid control than a controller...
the wii isn't as powerful as the ps3, but it has more types of games...
the ps3 has more graphical prowess... it also has more multimedia features... both are awesome systems... but overall i'm more interested in ps3... yea the wii has good games, but only like 3... zelda, which is better on gamecube because it stays with the traditional link/left handedness, super smash bros brawl, and metroid prime 3... mario died after sunshine and the mario party series died along time ago too...
ps3 has the same franchises (devil may cry, god of war, mgs) but they all don't have the same basic story as the previous one and use a different basic formula...
