A lot of people think that the year 2012 is significant. Some think the world's going to end by then. People in the games industry, on the other hand, think that it will be a beginning instead of an end: the beginning of the next console cycle.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli is one of those who believe that 2012 is when the next generation of game consoles will start showing up. Speaking to Joystiq, Yerli also noted that even if console manufacturers don't put out new hardware by then, Crytek will still be ready with their next CryEngine version.

We will have our next engine ready by that, independently whether there will be hardware or not. We are assuming based on the cycle -- the Moore's Law -- and everything. If you predict the computational power and trend. You kinda know how much CPU and GPU will be there and trend. If you take those things into account you can sort of predict where things are going.

Earlier this year, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot also expressed similar statements regarding the next console cycle's 2012 kickoff.

UPDATE:

Here we have two demo videos for CryEngine 3 from GamesCom 2009.

They haven't released one title for a console. How can you tell they can't make a good game on the PS3?

Btw: The CryEngines are really good. They produce excellent graphics and controls. From what I've can tell, they have way more potential than other ressource-wasting engines.

Is too soon. There were barely any great games this gen. It's so bad that I can count the number of great games. I don't have a Wii so those games aren't on my lists and PSP and DS don't count just for being handhelds. I'd say 2014 is the best time to release a new system.

Amazing how the next CryEngine will be released in 2012, coinciding with many people's beliefs that the world will end that same year. I have a theory: maybe the massive power taken for all the computers and consoles all over the world desperately trying to run the CryEngine at max settings will cause the earth to implode from the lack of resources needed to run it?

If you look at the Playstation Brand a new home gaming console comes out every 6 years. PS2 6 years after PS1 and PS3 6 years after PS2. When Sony says 10 year life span they mean that the console will continue to be supported for 10 years. As of now the PS2 is still going and is getting closer to reach its 10 year life span. It was released in 2000 so in 2010 it reached 10 years. This is contrary to what Microsoft does which is a 4 years between release of the Xbox and Xbox 360 and instantly cutting support off the Xbox making it only a 4 year life span. Xbox 360 has the lead now so I find no reason for them to release a console so soon. So we might be looking at a 5 years till next release which would be 2011 I would say. Sony being extremly stubborn will still release in 2010 and lose a year behind Microsoft again. If you notice the one that comes out first usually does better. Sony did better last yr when it released in 2000 and this year Microsoft released it one year before Sony did albeit a flawed system that had a huge failure rate.

said sony will release in 2010 when i meant to put 2012 and also noticed that if Microsoft releases in 2011 that will be the std 6 year time period.

Interesting theory, I'll have to mention it to the 2012 nuts I know. They'd probably take it seriously too

They have an article in Playboy in which they have some quotes from a woman who says she's buying a $36,000 bunker to shelter herself from the "cataclysm". And the article itself is about this gun nut hick who has like hundreds of weapons, and a few metric tons of food and equipment stockpiled. He says he spends an extra $400-500 per month on extra supplies. Weirdos.

Funny because the whole 2012 thing is completely bunk, just like Y2K. It's almost like these people want this cataclysm to happen

crytek , why dont you just learen PS3 codes like CApcom konami namco square did , why dont you produce a game a good game specialy for ps3 instead of making a engine , good games dont need hight GFX , many psp games are beter than one in 360 or ps3 ,

next crytek engine was a planed before the ps3 problem , they just made a mistake and then their engine are note compatible so WHat About XBOX360 its like PC not , so bring us a exclusif CRYSIS to 360 and prove that PS3 is bugy .

I think Crytek made a big mistake who cost them milions with the incompatibility of their engine with next gen consoles and make them kicked off the scene for a while ,, MAXIMUM ABSENCE,, .

» huh?

CryEngine2 was sold to Ubisoft if I remember correctly. They have to make a new one anyway so wheres the loss in money.

by phiyuku - 2009-08-17 14:46
» nvm

it was cryengine1 that was sold to ubisoft and I thought Far Cry 2 used CryEngine2 but I'm mistaken it was a heavily modified CryEngine. And CryEngine3 is rumored to look like "Medium" settings on CryEngine2. Anyway I don't think Crytek knows how to code that well when the game does indeed look great just not that good to justify the GPU that is needed to play that game on max settings with a good FPS and decent resolution.

i think if there will be new consoles by 2012,then they wil be called xbox something, and ps4.

so,this engine will be useless for the next consoles.

correct if i´wrong.

the new consoles .will be mre powerful than the actual, and the will have new programing running in them.

i think this is speculation ,by this guys.

in my opinion they should heve waited for the new machines, them put theyr hands to work
