If it's your habit to leave your consoles turned on even if you're not playing a game, then this report should make you realize how much money you needlessly spend on electricity bills. Australian consumer group Choice came up with a study that shows the power usage of common electronics, including our three favorite gaming consoles.
The study's results show that among the three major consoles - Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii - Sony's gaming machine guzzles the most amount of electricity in one go, even more than a mid-sized refrigerator, assuming that one leaves their Sony console turned on with a game running for 24/7.
To be more specific, a PS3 running a game non-stop for a week will consume as much as 33.34 kilowatts per hour, which roughly translates to US$ 4.75 dollars. On the other hand, the Xbox 360 uses 26 kilowatts per hour when left running a game for the same length of time, which is worth US$ 3.70.
The Nintendo Wii consumes the least amount of energy, clocking in at an impressive power-saving 3.14 kilowatts per hour for a week of non-stop gaming, or only 44 cents. Kudos goes to Nintendo for coming up with a power-saving gaming console.
However, you should know that just turning off your console isn't enough. Gaming consoles still consume a bit of energy even when turned off, as long as they're plugged into the power source. If you're a gamer who's getting burdened by costly power bills, you should know by now the best way to save: unplug your machines when not in use. And yes, you may want to lay off folding@home for a while.

So when you've got it like that it would probably use nothing.
The 360 doesn't have that so I normally just switch it off at the wall when I'm not using it, it's surprising to see for me just how much the both the 360 and the PS3 are sucking down. It's certainly made me reconsider the way that I use the 360 to watch most of my TV shows through its media extender function. If I bought an LCD tv with a built in PVR it would have to be better in terms of power consumption?

i read this somewhere recently that even for chargers of any mobile unit (psp, celfones), you have to take them out completely from the socket cos then the energy still passes through the cable, and if your unit isn't plugged in the other end, then the energy basically just doesn't go anywhere so it's just wasted.
am guessing the same concept could be applied here. but regardless, we're running low on energy and we're consuming too much indeed, whether it be on consoles or nuclear plants. so let's just unplug those suckers when not in use.

So if a PS3 runs non-stop for a single week, per hour on average it uses 33.34 kilowatts, so that means in a single week, you would have to pay 4.75 dollars. But how many ppl are actually leaving their PS3s on 24/7? Not that many, so by a weekly basis, we are using less than 4.75 dollars, much less, to be exact, if ur an avid gamer. Ok, let's say everyday you play 5 hours of games, in a week that's 35 hours. How many hours are there in a week? as someone said, 168 hours, and if u play this many hours, which equals a week, u pay 4.75 US. However, now we're talking 35 hours, per hour we're paying 0.2827, which rounds up to 0.28US, multiply that by 35, we get: 0.989583, which is a dollar per week around. And for a month, it's about 4 dollars, which is actually not bad, 4 dollars a month is not much at all, if this is hurting you, then play less and pay less. Play like 3 hours a day.

Only devices with COILS continue to consume TRACE amounts of electricity. For example, a toaster. However even today most appliances KILL the power before it hits a coil.
When you "flick the switch" to most devices today you simply have two wires plugged into the wall. i.e. NO DIFFERENT then the wires in your wall.
Like silver said, a power adapter has no switch so the transformer (coil) found inside it will draw a little power. But the amount is not worth caring about. You waste a hundred times more money every time you STOMP on your gas peddle.
I have a power meter that can measure watts. NOT just kilowatts. I plugged it into the PS3 with it turned off to make sure the power line didn't run into any wasteful components. After 30 minutes it registered ZERO watts.

I didn't notice any increase in my electric bill.
My PC is also on 24/7. It uses MUCH MORE power then the PS3.

The PS3 comes out at just over twice what the PC they tested uses, the 360 is roughly 1.5x the PC

A heating element by itself will not draw power when the circuit is OFF. But a heating COIL will. The heating element is COILED in most toasters you know-nothing fool.
