The science of science and consoles - Image 1

As consoles get more powerful, their functions are expanding beyond video games. The PlayStation 3, for example, hosts the breakthrough Folding@Home program, and whose cell processor has also been used in medical imaging enhancements.

The Wii, on the other hand, has been making waves in the field of physical rehabilitation and even education. Consoles are indeed making their mark in the fields of science, from chemistry, to medicine, and even physics.

At the University of Massachusetts, an array of 16 PS3s running on Linux are being used to calculate what would happen if two black holes collide. The University of Illinois, on the other hand, is looking to PS3s to simulate interactions between electrons in atoms.

The Wii is also reaching into medicine beyond physical rehab. It's also being used as a tool for surgeons to improve their techniques. It's also be used to measure movement deficiencies in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Professor Gaurav Kanna of the University of Massachusetts explains that consoles are becoming more popular in science because they do what supercomputers can do, and even more so:

A single high-precision simulation can sometimes cost more than 5,000 hours on the TeraGrid supercomputers. For the same cost, you can build your own supercomputer using PS3s. It works just as well, has no long wait times and can be used over and over again, indefinitely.

Professor Peter Coveney of University College London also comments on the role of consoles in science, saying:

There is no doubt that the entertainment industry is helping to drive the direction of high performance computational science - exploiting the power available to the masses will lead to many research breakthroughs in the future.

I wonder....

You know how these consoles are usually sold at a lost the first year. If Sony & M$ think more people are going to use them for servers or just for computing, will they be less likely to sell them at a loss since those people don't buy games. Hopefully this will be a very low percentage of people, so it won't have that much effect on us gamers.

please

Black holes aren't scientific. Black holes are mathematical theory, they are not proven or even have any evidence for support for the theory. About as factual as sci-fi movies. Besides, how can one find out what happens when two black holes collide when nobody can even decide what would happen if a single black hole even existed?
by slicer4ever - 2008-02-17 17:50:38
no evidence

i think you want to check your fact's black holes have been proven to exist in actual space, now worm holes and white hole's that's another story completly
by L0d1z - 2008-02-17 19:10:51
black holes

Exists in the center every galexie. it what pulld them together in the first place. One can not view a black hole with the naked eye, but you can measure the gravitational "hole" that are present. excuse my english it's not my first nor second language plus I am very tired. cheers :)
by Koru-Kun - 2008-02-17 21:14:59
oh really then

show me. Give me a link to a journal or a documented scientific discovery. I GUARANTEE that there has been no evidence found for black holes.
by Koru-Kun - 2008-02-17 21:18:09
.....

Tell me, what measuring device is used to determine the location and source for any black hole, let alone a black hole in the Milky Way galaxy? What evidence and proof do you have to claim that black holes formed galaxies in the first place? Where did they come from since you sound sure of yourself?

haha

its called predictions man.,

No such things as black holes then? Next u will b saying theres no Santa Clause. Don't know u but I'll never take anything u say seriously if I ever read ur posts again. Just so u know, u are a tit!
by slicer4ever - 2008-02-18 08:15:47
see big_daddy's post

if i'd gotten back earlier i would have posted the same link incase you can't find it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole

The Wii has many scientific uses

The Wii has proved invaluable in research with the mentally challanged. Wii-tards can be kept entertained for hours with simple mindless tech demos!
by Koru-Kun - 2008-02-18 15:40:16
please

don't give me a wikipedia link, fool. Give me a documented STUDY that uses all the proper legitimate observational and experimental data and progress that lead to this theoretical idea becoming a proven fact! I already know what people theorize about black holes, i want hard evidence... not just your "predictions" and "wiki" links.
by Koru-Kun - 2008-02-18 15:46:13
ha

i don't need the respect of a s*****-fed child that's been indoctrinated through the school systems and "modern" ideology. You don't know even HOW to think because you are only getting told WHAT to think. Go research the material on both sides fully and weigh the evidences before you try to display your pitiful reasoning to anybody again. Back yourself up with facts, not crap like "I won't ever listen to a single thing you ever post again because you say things i don't like to hear." You're what the world calls, "a whiner".
by Koru-Kun - 2008-02-18 15:53:12
LMAO @ Big Daddy

if you can possibly comprehend this, try to read it: http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0503200 If you can't figure out what that means, read a commentary on it by a NASA physicist, Philip Ball: http://www.rense.com/general63/baholes.htm
by Koru-Kun - 2008-02-18 15:57:58
Just go here for a start, then search the rest for yourselves

http://thepoliticker.net/archives/2005/04/black_holes_do.html I can't believe so many people actually believe in this sci-fi crap! Just because they are told something doesn't mean you should believe it based on authority alone! Try to find out the truth for yourself and not look at biased crap that comes from people trying to push their political agendas. I swear, society is getting more gullible and more like cattle the less and less they want to actually THINK for themselves.
by Koru-Kun - 2008-02-18 16:05:15
what the heck?

why can't i say s***** in a sentence? It ***** out the word and made it sound like a bad word!!! S*****-fed + s***** fed
by Koru-Kun - 2008-02-18 16:09:24
OMG

Since when did the word "S-p-o-o-n" become a derogatory word?!
by Rosindubh - 2008-02-18 16:58:50
You R-tard!!!

Firstly: You spout on about gullibility and then go and f***ing cite a reference which at the bottom says "I'm not sure this theory flies with me." Secondly: Are you seriously trying to counter-argue a widely held theory (and yes i will say theory as you are right we can only see the effects of black holes) with a bl**dy DARK MATTER THEORY which is even LESS proven!!! I think you should take your own advice and "Back yourself up with facts, not crap" As far as I can recall, and please tell me if I'm wrong (which going by your previous posts I'm sure you will with some uber paranoid conspiracy filled dribble), dark matter does not create an event horizon which would therefore not explain the loss of matter that occurs around a black hole, it would only take the matter and add it onto itself. I completely agree with your view that tpeople should think for themselves and not just believe what they are told... ultimately the freedom, investigation and review of all information is the only way that the human race will continue to push itself beyond. But what really ticks me off is when people like you, who have read one too many conspiracy sites (assuming that you have the attention span larger than that of a sloth on morphine) come onto sites like this and decide that your views are somehow more intelligently informed than those of anyone else just because you've watched zeitgeist one too many times! Open discussion is what these are for yes, but not at the cost of everyone else's sanity. If in future you want to have this sort of argument I suggest taking yourself over to Oxford University's website, argue there, and post your discussion here. I know I'd surely like to see how you miraculously plummet back to Earth to join the rest of us!!!!!
by slicer4ever - 2008-02-18 17:09:07
umm...

try using the dam SOURCES link in the wikipedia link before u speak again please actually look at the *****ing link
by slicer4ever - 2008-02-18 17:15:12
...

really you use the augument of a few scientist's against the entire scientific community, every idea has people against it no matter how much evidence their is to it, i guess your simple one of those people
by Rosindubh - 2008-02-18 17:30:06
And now for something completely different...

Well actually it's along the same lines, I just like the Monty Python line!!! If anyone's got some spare CPU cycles please check out this website https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ They do a lot of good work! =>
by ElDiablo - 2008-02-18 19:02:38
Read it.

Read the page th@ ur linking 2 + think its ironic th@ u say don't believe any of the evidence on black holes but read this 1 blogged page on the internet + believe th@ instead. Ur still a fool. Look up super massive black holes while ur @ it there @ the center of most galaxy's. Not seen there effects so I'll just have 2 take the word of those th@ use the big looking glass thing.
by Rosindubh - 2008-02-18 19:13:47
Ahh thank you!! @ ElDiablo

Thank you. This guy just proves that there's such a thing as less than common sense
