Comeau talks about the darkside of Wii's popularity: no one buying Wii games

We all know about Nintendo Wii's current popularity in the gaming console market, and the claim is backed up by credible proof in the form of numbers, both in the console sales count as well as Nintendo's stock value. But there has to be a dark side for every shining moment, and TheStreet's research analyst Michael Comeau may have an idea about what exactly the Wii's dark side is: there are less and less people buying Wii games, especially third-party titles.

In his video interview, Comeau said that Nintendo did a good job in moving consoles, but somehow failed when it comes to selling software. The few good games that the Wii has, he said, are mostly developed by Nintendo itself. He claims that only a few people buy third party games, which could be very alarming.

Why so? Comeau explained that it may scare off third-party developers from creating any more Wii titles, and Nintendo's waggling console may suffer if they bolt from making more games for the Wii. Comeau also said that because of this, the Wii may fall off the pedestal it's sitting off right now and get bumped off the spot by Sony's PlayStation 3.

He also mentioned a lot of good points regarding his prediction, but its better to listen to the entire video. Go ahead and click on the Play button below to listen to the interview!

» the proof keeps rolling in

The Wii will fail, and fail spectacularly. Sure Nintendo can sell systems during the supply issues they're faking, but not software. It's hard to create new interest in old generation games.

Check out the NEW Wii Resident Evil 4! The same game, but with new Wii controls! Totally worth a new $50 game price again!

Unlike competitors, Nintendo is ripping everyone off so bad selling their overpriced last gen systems, they don't need to license software to post record profits! The development costs are so low, they don't need to sell many copies either. Consumers pay next gen prices for the systems and full price for old Gamecube ports that were re-released with new controls! What a total rip-off!

Nintendo is the biggest recycler of system hardware and games, and they make killer profits off idiots willing to pay top dollar for old crap that's cheaper elsewhere!

The Wii has NOTHING going for it. No price cuts, Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros. the only games for the next year even worth mentioning, almost no 3rd party support, still can't find one in a store, won't support HD, dwindling software sales, and still idiot soccer moms are lining up fighting for them!

My theory is the idiot soccer moms want something cheap, which the Wii is the chapest. They also want something they can also use, even if it's for only 30 minutes of Wii sports when the box first gets opened and they (along with the kids) get bored with it.

Everybody of course is entitled to their own opinion, but at least get some facts straight before you go on a rant:

1)RE4 was only $29.99

2)There are more 3rd party games than 1st party games currently available on the Wii

3)I am definately no Soccer mom.

I am by no means a Sony/Microsoft fan and I'm entitled to my own opinion of those consoles, but again I have no right to call out an entire population of Sony/Microsoft fans "idiots" or stereotype them all as "soccer moms". Have fun playing whatever console you like (I know I sure have fun playing the Wii), but seriously keep your hate messages off this site.

People come to the wii looking for new games, MP3/SSBB/SMG will sell like hotcakes.

Generic port #492 will sell jack *****. Don't bring ***** to the Wii, people ain't gonna bite.

» .

10 million console owners are going to want a game, of course the flagship games will sell. Unlike real systems, there just isn't anything to choose from. From a technical aspect, the games are cheap and horrible. Nintendo can't even think of a new game idea or character in the last 15 years. There's nothing innovative about the total lack of creativity there.

Nintendo needs to put their consoles in the toy department next to the action figures and keep them out of the real game console department in stores.

I wasn't even going to bother with this completely obvious sony attack on nintendo, until some idiot remarked "the wii will fail and fail hard" lol what alternate reality are you living in?

I literally almost died laughing!

because in the reality I live in..

The wii has already outsold the the the ps3 many times over, and is in fact the current next gen leader.

anyone who can't see this is a last ditch effort from sony to attack nintendo. well, I'll stop here nuff said..

» 3rd Party Developers

The only reason that 3rd party games aren't selling really well is they suck. Look at that gingerbread man game and the Anubis II game!! 3rd party developers are simply not putting in enough effort to draw in the hardcore or the casual! This isn't Nintendo's fault, but the developers, and right now, unfortunately, the 3rd party devs have the Wii in a pigeonhole and using their crappy, underdeveloped games as a scape goat for the reason their games aren't selling instead of doing what they normally do for other consoles: put in double the effort into the next game so that people will actually have a reason to buy the game!

I'm really starting to think that 3rd party devs don't really want to work on the Wii. They're not taking advantage of the system at all. Sometimes I wish Nintendo would do what they used to do back then and deny games that don't look appealing and force 3rd parties to make better, higher quality games. Nintendo is too open to 3rd parties this time around, and that tolerance of having very low quality games on their system may become their curse.

Damn, you beat me to responding to that propaganda though.

» No way!

I do not believe the interview at all. They are wrong. They do not know everything. Sorry but you are wrong. This guy have some good points but still he is wrong. He do not see the future. Shut up, guy!

» Be honest with yourselves

Looking at the NPD, Game Informer, Gamespot, EGM, and other reliable sources it looks like the only things that sell on the Wii are Wii Sports (sold separately in Japan) and Wii Play.

The amazing part is that people are satisfied with just owning Wii Sports and that's it. I like spending $250 on something more than a tennis simulator (a bad one at that) so I feel real bad for everyone who bought this just for that.

Now I'm not going to bash Nintendo made games but I like the third party more than the first!!!! Paper Mario was a kids game, Mario Party didn't support widescreen, Zelda was too long and a little campy, and excitetruck looked terrible.

My favorite 3rd party are: Rayman Raving Rabids, DDR: Hottest Party, Mysims, and Elebits.

The problem lies in Nintendos lack of "quality control" so games like Chicken Shoot would never make it to the machine...

» can we all speak the truth for a moment

. nintendo using last gen technology and selling as next gen technology with an overpriced price

. 3rd party developers using the wii as a way to make their cheap and rushed games just for profit.

. xbox360 has horrible hardware designs making the system destroy itself in due time even with improvements, any 360 can mess up. RROD

. Game for the ps3 that are multiplatform aren't taking advantage of the system
