Despite its immense popularity, especially in Japan, Monster Hunter 3 has one nasty little deal breaker that could jeopardize its success. If you wanted online play in Japan, you'd have to cough up and pay for monthly subscription fees to pay for servers. Luckily, Capcom now sees that that might not be such a good idea, and is now looking for alternatives to get rid of those fees.

Chris Kramer, Capcom USA's senior director of communications and community, explained the matter back in TGS 09:

It's something that we're looking into at the moment and there are a few factors to consider. Firstly, Monster Hunter isn't as popular in the West, so it might put people off. Secondly, Japan doesn't have Friend Codes, so Capcom run all the servers and the monthly fee is essentially to pay for those costs.

The thought of having to pay extra monthly could definitely prove to be make-or-break for the game, at least for those who have plans of playing Monster Hunter 3online. Hopefully, they'll find a way to make ends meet on that matter.

What they should do is put this amazing game back where it started, on a SONY platform! I can tell you, they will lose a lot of customers because of this Wii change. But hey, who knows... maybe not.

» Lose customers?

This game was geared towards the Japanese market.

The Japanese like Monster Hunter. The Japanese like the Wii. If anything, they will gain customers this way.

There's no point in trying to argue with a Sony fanboy, because you can't talk them down, but I do wish you guys would understand that it was a smart business move on their part and they really don't care about your stupid platform loyalty.

It was a smart move on Capcoms part but not for the reason he said. Monster Hunter fans are gonna buy monster hunter no matter the platform so the sales would be the same, plus the ps3 has sold very well in Japan so the japanese love the ps3 as well as the wii. The reason it was smart is because it's so much cheaper to make a wii game and then you have an excuse to charge people a monthly fee and then just claim it's only their to make ends meet. Their gonna sell tons no matter how bad the game is so quality was not a factor in their decision making on what platform to put it on, then again, Monster Hunter has never been a quality product.

Why should you have a problem? Capcpm is releasing the impressive Lost Planet 2 which is like an alternative to Monster Hunter in a few days or weeks on PS3 + X360. U can also buy Demons souls Exclusive to the PS3 which is in a way like Monster Hunter, but you know about the game don't U?? Check em out, u will like them.

@dd409 I love how people make assumptions with the "fan boy" remark without knowing the persons background. I've been with Nintendo since the SNES through the Wii. I'm mad I sold my Wii now that this is coming out. But I sold my Wii just to play PS3 with my friends, since I was the only one who had a Wii in my group. And also I wrote, "But hey, who knows... maybe not." Meaning I wasn't against it all the way.

@CLIFF BLESZINSKI Thanks for the understandable response. After I read this, it totally makes sense now!

@T-Max Blaze I've downloaded the Lost Planet 2 Demo and that game looks AMAZING! And it kind of felt like Monster Hunter but with guns! Yet, I haven't played the 1st one. Demon's Soul looks like a VERY interesting RPG. Well, these will have to do until they hopefully release another Monster Hunter for the PSP.
