Guess who's getting DVD playback after all? After all those rumors which were semi-confirmed then later debunked entirely... Right now, we've got "TEH" WIN right here. In the classic words of Doc Frankenstein: "It's Aliiiiiive!" And now, we're wondering, was this Nintendo's big secret that they'd supposedly announce right about Wii launch date or is there something else?Anyways, it's writ in stone now. No erasies. No take-backs. Nintendo's just selected Sonic Solutions to bring DVD-movie viewing capabilities in a future version of the Wii, sometime during the latter half of 2007 (and not only in Japan, as previously confirmed).
The Sonic CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator will be incorporated into the console and will support all the AV formats of DVD standards, as well as higher functions such as interactive menu screens, multiple video angles, and anamorphic widescreen video.
Senior vice-president of Sonic Solutions Jim Taylor says that they'd be very pleased to have been chosen by Nintendo and they're going to make sure to do their best. To quote, "Game consoles represent a fresh market and platform where we can introduce a new audience of potentially millions to the quality of our brand and the power of our digital media applications."
And for a split-second, the next-gen wars just took a drastic turn. Where to now? Sit tight, folks. The latter half of 2007 might still be a ways off, but with the Wii launch looming ahead, we'd surely be too busy to notice the time fly by.

can nintendo EVER make up their mind.
Is this software that will be downloaded onto the Wii via perhaps the shop channel, or is this something can will only be in the '07 versions of the Wii? Cuz if its the latter... that totally sucks!
I don't see a point in the Wii having DVD Playback, because everyone nowdays has multi-regional dvd players which can play imports as well as ones in their own country. I don't see a point really if everyone has one nowdays.
I really hope that this would be a Free download to make DVD viewing for the Wii possible and not a different Wii system like the DS and DS Lite.

Probobly both. It is possible that they may make a downloadble driver as an update that supports DVD playback... As far as i know the Wii disks are derrived from DVD's so it could be possible.

According to Kotaku it seems to be only for a new '07 version, AND it'll cost more. Thats just stupid. I hope they do come out with some sort of software for playback as well.
Yeah, i couldn't care less either about dvd playback. The only people who think dvd playback is important for games are sony fansboys.
It's a Software DVD Player
I can't play to use this new DVD software I heard it boosts 5-8 GB of data! I better go sell my old and outdated VHSs now since DVD is comming to us soon. Oh wait a minute PS2 already had dvd?
Well, i was expecting a noDVD wii, now il be holding off until next year, i dont like AV switching. Or, i buy a wii now, and next year itl take a plunge in value, go to EBgames and have them give me 10 dollars for my 2006 wii when i want the clatter-free DVD playing wii next year
Agreed, also a dvd player without these connections is just a heap of junk. If the new wii dvd edition comes out with coax / optical, the upgrade to the new unit would be great and I would defnetly consider getting one, if hardware doesn't change i don't expect many sales to come from it. give us an inbuilt HD-DVD or a blue-ray dvd player, that would be far more exciting. - schrambo

It is about time because I do not have it and I now can buy it...a video game and dvd ... sound fun to me. I had dvd many time and I resell to get better and better one but this one is what I am going to get! I praise them at last. It is going to be their first time to have dvd since Sony PS2. YAY!
