Can the Wii challenge the PS3 and 360? |
Ó
We mean really...can it? Looking at it from afar, it's basically a battle between the Wii controller against the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360's graphics powerhouses. In an interview, the man from Redmond himself stated that Nintendo wasn't Microsoft's biggest competitor in the game console industry - it was Sony.Confident in the performance turn-out of the 360 (especially after all the improvements), Bill Gates decided instead that the gauntlets should be thrown down for the similarly performing PS3.
But Clayton Christensen, a professor of Harvard Business School and author of "The Innovator's Dilemma", says that the game console industry will come to a point where games will often be technologically "good enough" for everyone. He argues that even if the Wii comes with just "good enough" graphics, it also does come coupled with an innovative (and arguably popular) controller, especially with all the excitement around the new style of gaming through the Wiimote.
Andy Grove, Intel's former CEO, cited the same book for its insights into the state of competition among tech-related companies. He believes that an "inflection point" will occur when devices become too complicated or too feature-rich. Nothing better is gained anymore than what is really needed. But he argues that such a point will be hard to determine and even harder to predict. If Nintendo correctly predicted that the industry has reached an inflection point, well they're going to have a field day while Sony and Microsoft move shop.
Our team feels that Nintendo's focus into innovation, rather than muscle, is a bold and much needed spur to the industry to provide us with more ways to interact with a game, rather than how good a game looks. Immersion is a key element to a good game, but it's a two-sided relationship: the player's interaction with the game and the game's visuals and audio drawing the player into its midst.
So the Wii got one part right...and the PS3 and 360 got the other part right. It's only a matter of time before a game is no longer just a game - it's an experience. And what an experience it's going to be...

It is *cough*better*c ough*!
graphics really dont matter to me. of course it would be cool to have ps3 graphics on a wii, but i think having a fun time with a new type of gaming is better.
i think nintendo got it right.
I have a wii and 360, and honestly good system BUT LACK OF GAMES, It has like 1 game worth playing zelda, i now use my 360 daily and wii is gathering dust
NINTENDO GET SOME FREAKIN GAMES
People always say that they prefer wii because of the innovative gameplay, and thats okay for now. But there is so much you can do with a wii in terms of gameplay.
I mean, look at this vid: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Gy0KHdfLVfI
the wii isnt capable of using euphoria and frankly I would prefer new gameplay like euphoria
or fully destructible environments than a motion sensetive controller.

I think more people want a realistic gaming console then something that looks pretty. Everyone wants to use the Wii Remote becuase it's them really playing not just mashing buttons. Sure Indian Jones looks nice but all the guy is doing is mashing buttons. Give me the Wii Remote and have me grab the guy like in Godfather or punch him in the face like in Wii Boxing. I'm telling you more people want to PLAY a game rather than WATCH a game
From the article:
"In an interview, the man from Redmond himself stated that Nintendo wasn't Microsoft's biggest competitor in the game console industry - it was Sony."
I also read a comment from Gates saying the exact opposite, that Sony were no longer a threat and that MS was keeping a closer eye on Nintendo.
Bill Gates telling porky pies? I was as shocked as you are........;-)
Wii is playing the same game as the DS when it was reelased.
Its a new way of playing games.
But it has downsides that I have seen and probably everyone else as well. Some people just like a normal controller. I have met alot of nintendo fans that just dont like that they dont have the option of using a joystick to play certain games.
But in terms of sales, Microsoft and Nintendo are the companys that might change positions.
The Xbox360 sales arent doing to well. In factt hey are doing worse then the Xbox in the same period of time. While the Xbox360 is getting games like GoW and Lost Planet, not everyone wants a shooter game or to play online. This is Microsofts reason why they might lose 2nd place to Nintendo, they have sub-par single player games.
Fact being, not everyone who plays games plays online. Gamers who play online prefer the PC and spend the extra money to do so.
The console has always been about the single player games. This is where Microsoft is losing the battle, and the reason why Nintendo is currently winning it.
You guys just DON"T get it do you? You say you think people want better graphics? Look around you the signs are everywhere. People are choosing the origin of games (FUN)! This article is funny! Can the Wii challenge the 360 and PS3? Ha! It is already! The Wii is a runaway success. In term of sales and as you guys say what people want; when everyone is buying Wii. You've read the reports of PS3's clogging up stores, now the Wii goes for more on ebay than PS3. Hell, Sony is still trying to sell off the last of thier first shipment. Nintendo just sold thier 3rd already. Sales surveys say at this sales rate the Wii will surpass 360 by the end of the year. Americans are bad about only looking at things from an American stand piont. Which in an US view everything is about graphics and 1st person shooters and World of warcraft. Which is why the 360 will NEVER break big in Asian countries and only does so-so in Europe. Not everyone likes U.S. style gaming; Microsoft is learning that the hard way. Reality check, at this piont the PS3 is not even in the equation as far as sales or consumer demand! FACT! Don't get me wrong visuals do mean something, just not EVERTHING. Look at the Matrix. As the Series went on the budget got higher due to the visual upgrades, but somehow the films got worse and worse. Meaning sometimes awsome visuals can be used as a cover up for a sub-par film or in this case game. Maddens ratings get worse every year even though the visuals are better. Why? Nothing really changes! This is why Madden on the Wii recieved higher ratings than it's 360 PS3 counterparts in most reviews, because it was all around NEW. How was Zelda voted game of the year over Gears of War?
Especially to based of the arguement of the graphic whores? The OVERALL experience that's how! Not just one aspect (graphics). Can the Wii challenge the PS3 and 360? Power-wise, no! However, if this was about sales and what the people are picking, and walking out the store with; it would be....Can the 360 and PS3 challenge Wii's fun, innovation, originality, freshness, and public appeal, and last but not least sales figures?
Nope! Look at consumer demand and sales! Are the 360 and PS3 challenging the Wii? OOOppps! I didn't mean to add PS3, like I said in terms of sales it's not even in the equation anymore.
Nintendo Wii is *****, i mean some of the games on the Wii are on the PS3 and 360, id much rather play them on the 360 or PS3 with better graphics than playing them on the Wii using the Wiimote.
Does the wii even play video games???????? and where is the online multi player???????? SAD?????? 360 is good but cost alot in add on's for it... at least you get you money's worth out of the ps3...... can't wait till the end of march to get my hands on one.... free online,7 controllers, blu e tooth headset not to mention blu-ray hd movies....... tilt sensing controller , just incase you wanna feel like a nintendo baby.......
it came out 2 months ago
the reason wii is doing so well is because it has no competition. It's a battle between 360 and PS3. nintendo is running on a different track laughing.
p.s im glad we go to read from 2 sony fans at the end here
Well, over the last few weeks I've been keeping an eye on the Internet for comments on the Wii, and it's nice to see that a lot of people like it as much as me. Unless it's the same five Nintendo Fan Boys...
Say what you want about it, but the Wii is popular, and I'm glad I got one at launch.
I might get a 360 sooner or later... Screw the PS3 though
360 cost almost as much with all the add on's you need....
see heres the thing...i dont know why people defend there console saying 360 PWNS PS3 and vice versa
THERE WILL BE NO LOSER IN THE CONSOLE WAR
some people like the 360 experience, some like ps3, some like wii
or some like me, like all 3
Catwalking the wall as always, Bill? I'd like to know where you got this source. This could be valuable to the compilation of developments since this article was published. If ever there's a follow up, at least we can slap him in the face with it. ^_^
Don't be fooled by current Wii sales and market-hype. People are buying are it for the novelity factor: a new way to play games. How long will they play the Wii in the long run?
The problem is that the Wii is limited in its graphics capabilities, compared to the XBox360. XBox360 games like Gears of War, Lost Planet - Extreme Condition, etc., clearly have better graphics than any Wii games today. Futhermore, these games are still not taking full advantage of the 360's hardware; over time, xbox 360 games will get much better in graphics quality. Can we say the same for the Wii?
Some argue that it's the game play that matters. This is true, but for many realistic games, graphics plays a huge role in a game. In the article, Clayton Christensen, says that the graphics will eventually get good enough. As a graphics researcher, I can confidently say that it's nowhere good enough. Until we can't tell the difference between watching a movie (full photo-realism) and playing a game, then we can stop pushing the graphics technology.
Sure, the Wii has this new way to play games. What's to prevent Microsoft (or Sony) to release a version of their own? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Xbox 360's and PS3's version of their 'nunchuk' will be working games that look *far* better than the Wii games.
In the short term, the Nintendo Wii appears to capture the interest of gamers. However, the fundamental graphics limitations will hurt game quality in the long run. Meanwhile, Microsoft and PS3 will create their own nunchuks, matching the game interaction but producing better looking games.
