Blue LEDs for Wii controllers: a video |
Ó
PSPDoom, nice guy that he is, decided to send us a tip about his experience in doing the "A" button modification we wrote about a week or so back. He actually decided to go the distance, however, putting LEDs on his Wiimote and his Classic Controller. He even sent us some pictures and video of the controllers in action.
Of course, he says it's a simple mod, though complete newcomers to modding will probably want some supervision if they're thinking of doing something like this. Here's what he had to say about it (with some editing for clarity, of course):
Using 3v mini blue LED's, just solder to the "red" wire pin on the classic remote pcb board (you will see it once you open it) for the 3v positive & solder to the "black" wire pin off the remote pcb board for the ground.
We don't completely understand that last bit about soldering off (We prefer to keep our warranties, in case of problems), but if it's only a matter of soldering and case replacement, then we're pretty sure Wii-users with the requisite experience should have an easy time with this.
This mod highlights two great features, however: this mod doesn't eat up any significant battery life and the Wiimote mod looks really pretty. For now, feel free to enjoy the video, and if you're up to it, why not mod your own controller as well?

Please do NOT distribute technical information that you don't understand, ESPECIALLY when you are rephrasing it. I'm 99.9% sure he meant solder it to a certain point on the board, NOT to un-solder something from the board. You are only picking up some of the power, NOT rewiring the controller. Oh, and no matter how little power this takes, removing ANY power that the unit expects can be dangerous. It can underpower critical parts of the system and cause them to fry. I seriously doubt he did the research necessary to know how this will affect the power-sensitive portions of the control and he may find his control is dead in as little as a few days, or it may last years before dying. We don't know yet. Sure, this looks cool, and I'm actually considering the mod for one of my 'motes. But I'm willing throw throw away $40+ if it dies. If you aren't, don't do this.
Wow, this guy sounds like a hater, going dead? I have been modding system + controllers for 10 years with LED's. Sounds like we got a scared child who wants to protect there $20 classic remote, what a joke. The mod takes no battery life from any components on the wii remote or the classic.
does anyone know if there's an actual video of HOW to do this mod? IT sounds easy and I'm sure I could figure it out if I opened mine up, but i think it'd be better if someone would just make a quick video of what to do (it shouldn't even be long for someone who knows what they're doing).
could the creator or anyone do this mod and create a guide please!
