Another name change for the Wii?!

Ó

WiiIt wasn't too long ago when Nintendo Revolution was renamed Wii, but now, rumor has it that the Wii might be up for another round of name changing. Apparently, someone from Nintendo said that the negative reaction of the community and marketing strategies are the causes of the name change. Just when we were used to calling it Wii...sigh!

Someone over at the Nintendo Marketing Department also said that "we have received over 200,000 e-mails with complaints about the Wii, and the console name has been commonly associated with urine. We have been the target of many jokes, and we strongly believe that it's a bad thing for the company's reputation." Hey no company would want to associate their gaming console to human excrements right?

Plus, in a recent poll, they found that 62% of gamers think "Wii" sounds childish, and 49% said they wouldn't buy the console judging only by its name. You may be asking now what possible names are being considered. Names such as Nintendo GameZone, Nintendo FutureNation and Nintendo GlobalBOX have popped up. On the other hand, Nintendo denies this possible name change.

What do you think about this? Do you think that a name change will do wonders for the Wii, or do you think it's a bad idea? If given the chance, what possible names will you come up with? Let us know through your comments.

I agree...I just got used to the name! I think changing it would be more damaging now. They'd have to change their official site, people would be confused, etc...

Then again they could just change it back to Revolution. But introducing a third name would be stupid in my opinion.

I don't really mind the name wii, but if there has to be another change, why not name it Nintendo Neon? it's so perfect and not childish or anything like that. nintendo could use the disc slot as a reason for the name, saying it's related to the neon light where the disc slot is.

I think it should stay the Wii. Anyone who accosiates the name with urine is childish and should not be taken seriously when it comes to a multimillion dollar corporations dicision on what to call THEIR system. Who cares if it sounds childish. Hello PLAYstation. When i was in kindergarden we had a playstation. It consisted of a kitchen table and the little fake cooking area. It was called our playstation. Now that name is huge.

The name should stay. If it doesn't, id go back with revolution.

But changinf now would be weird. Unless they go back to Revolution!

Although I don't think product awareness outside the gaming industry has grown enough for a name change to damage the system, because let's face it in another week we would be used to the third name and the rest of the people would never have heard the old names enough to remember that it even had a another name.

when ninntendo first revealed the new name i admit i was a bit skeptical and wondered why, but after hearing the reasoning behind the name it got me thinking that it was a name change for the better and that i actually liked it and know that the name has grown and me and probably tons of other people it would be too confusing if a third name be added to the picture.

keep the name if people don't buy something based on its name then they are terrible judges when it comes to picking the right system to get.....

This is f'n ridiculous. Rumors like this are stupid. It's not news, it's just a lie. Rumor, speculation, and utter crap. Please don't post something like this in the future, all it leads to is people getting angry or annoyed (like myself) and that just lowers the reliability of your news.

Why on hell would Nintendo change Wii -after all that ultrashort-abbrevationofit self stuff- for something like Nintendo GameZone, Nintendo FutureNation or Nintendo GlobalBOX?

Forget it.

We love Wii already.

it's just a marketing skam to prove how successful the name change has been.

When they first announced it all the comments on the net were negative.

Now everyone is used to it and they like it.

Nintendo is milking the whole name thing for all its worth.. good on them,

# New names are worse...Guest 2006-06-16 04:32
Has anyone actually ever used the name of the nintendo system they're using? I never remember saying "I'm gonna go play N64" or "Lets play GameCube"; It's ALWAYS been "We're playing Nintendo". That's the way it will be with this system too. If you're trying to tell someone who doesn't play videogames about the next gen systems, you don't say "PS3, XBOX360, and Wii". The response you get if you say that is "WTF, is Nintendo not making a new system?" (Seriously, try it). Nintendo changes the name of their system with every single console; have they really done anything different this time? They're just using this name to create a "controversy buzz" for their new system; it's a trick to create interest, and it's working brilliantly. Hope you hardcore ninty fans are planning on waiting in long lines when this thing gets released (because you REALLY don't want to wait til Christmas, they'll all be gone).

# no need to changeGuest 2006-06-16 04:53
I was a HUGE hater of the "Wii" name when it was first announced; now it isn't a big deal. All Nintendo need to do is do some proper advertising, and people will get used to it. Not to mention that making a change like that at this point would be a very "Playstation" thing to do.

Wii fits the console. It's a perfect alignment of name and ability. It implies use for all ages. It's a name that will make you smile.

It's very innovative, just as the console it. Like they said at the Nintendo Pre-E3 Press Confrence, "Google" isn't a name that you would just pick or hear any day. I like the name "Wii"! It's as cool as saying "I Wuv You".

first and formost nintendo systems have lasted longer than anyother system on the market. nintendo makes the best quality hardware, i think ps3 will sell to rich spoiled brats like some of you who hate nintendo because you think nintendo is childish. you ps fans dont understand innovation and you never will. also 360 seems to be better quality but i would not pick it over nintendo, in it of itself nintendo wil stick around until the company dies off. i pray that doesnt happen but we never know then i would get bored as hell playing ps2 and or ps3 {not worth the money which ever wy u look at it} i would defenitly get bored playing those systems really fast. the name shouldstay WII and if it doesnt it will be a dissapointment all over the world.

Nintendo Wii? Sure. It's just a name. It was either that or they can go back to their old strategies and call it "Nintendo GameRhombus"

Personally I think the name "Wii" is horrible and isn't likely to attract any more customers. I agree that a more mainstream name is a good idea, but Wii isn't really cutting it for me. I am honestly embarassed to say the name in public. I will still buy the system regardless, due to is $200 price tag, but I am disappointed in Nintendo. Also, this is obviously a bogus rumor, been seeing a lot of those here lately...

No one knew what a Nintendo was when it first came out, but look at them now. The name isn't going to slow any sales, if anything, it'll increase them. I was all for the name Revolution, and as a 20 year old man, when they said it was called Wii, I was a bit embarrased to even say "we" in a conversation, but after witnessing E3 first hand and seeing the long line, which I waited forever in, I know that Wii is a good thing. I'm sure if it was called Revolution at least half of the hot babes I met wouldn't have even came to E3, so Wii is a perfect name.

# BIG mistakeGuest 2006-09-24 02:03
Wii has to be the ridiculous name for a gaming console. When I heard that it was going to be called Revolution, I thought that was a great name, why change it? It revolutionizes Nintendo's gaming consoles because of the controller and the backwords compatability (which I think is a great idea because I have about 30 GC games and it will be far easier than just having to completely start over) Long story short, The name Wii isn't living up to the potential that the system has.

# Reason for WiiGuest 2006-10-17 15:16
I heard Nintendo changed the name so everybody could memorize and to make the name suitable for the whole family. They want to make the Wii system fo0r the whole fanily. That is why they added about 6-7 accessibilities in the game, or as they call it channels.

Reply

# Six to seven channelsGuest 2006-10-17 15:26
First channel: disc channel

This is where you play the Wii games and Game Cube games.

Second Channel: The Mii Channel

This is the channel for making and editing portraits of faces and people in the console. Many of you will think the faces and the Mii channel is stupid. Well... Nintendo is making a console suitable for the family. Just ignore it.

Third channel: Weather forecast channel.

This channel will tell you your local weather if you have access to the internet in the console by having a broadband connection and a wireless router.

4th channel: Photo channel

You can edit your photos if you have some in your SD card. Just insert it into the Wii and your photos will display in your television. You can edit the photos and doodle on them. You probably can even edit videos.

5th channel: News channel

If you have internet access, you can see news from the world.

6th channel: Wii shopping

You can shop online for classic NES or SNES or N64 games, extra chennels, and other Nintendo stuff.

7th channel: Virtual Console channel

You can play classic Nintendo games. Even Nintendo 64 games!

That is it. Just here to tell you before buying it.
