(Another) Game violence bill passed in New York State

Ó

Andrew Lanza - Image 1The New York State Senate has just passed new legislation that seeks to (once again) curb video game violence. Bill S.5888, sponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza, was introduced just last Thursday (May 17) and was subsequently passed Tuesday of this week (May 21).

According to the press wire that's in circulation, this bill's agenda is to first create the Advisory Council on Interactive Media and Youth Violence, a board that's designed to review the current Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB).

The two other provisions of this bill include a requirement for all New York State retailers to place rating labels on their games, and to establish a Parent-Teacher Anti-Violence Awareness Program.

What I find counter-intuitive (and a little absurd) is that while the bill's provisions seem sensible, Lanza added this statement in the press release in order to make it seem more imperative to pass the bill into law:

The recent release of 'V-Tech Massacre,' a sick game which exploits the Virginia Tech University tragedy, is a painful reminder of the culture of violence which has severe consequences on our youth and society.

We assume he means V-Tech Rampage, Ryan Lambourn's highly controversial Flash game, which Mr. Lanza also attempted to parallel to Rockstar's upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV.

Indeed, while I agree with the legislation's movements for increased awareness, it's unsettling to know that the primary motivations for this legislation appear to be a knee-jerk reaction to the Virginia Tech incident and a game not affiliated with the large-scale video game industry. Of course, that's just my two cents on the matter - time will tell what revisions will play out as this bill goes through its paces.

What about you, QJ readers - what's your take on this new bill? We've posted a read link for the original press wire which details the bill's full mechanics. Read up on that and feel free to post a reply.

clearly the video game industry is not paying enough in the way of 'bribes' to shut these guys up! I mean look at the ridiculous gun laws in the US and the dominance of the oil industry and all the other bull***** going on.

how come the american senate and these do gooders have to blame the video game industry every time something like this happens. parents should spend more time with their kids, if they are under the required gaming age don't buy them the game.

maybe if they got guns banned instead of games! just an idea... you know the things that actually kill people.. maybe we wouldn't have these terrible things happen.. i live in the uk. guns are illegal.. this sort of thing doesn't happen... maybe Jack whats his name should think about that... typical gung ho mentality. to note i'm now in my early 30's played most of these violent games.. no matter how agry i got i wouldn't go off and kill people.. i wouldn't let my kids play them or watch them until they were old enough.

blame parents and guns!

I agree with you but the solution is already out there... its called the WII!!!! Its age rating???........ Highly Unsuitable for ages over 11...

lol lol I am just messing around but seriously the Wii is the solution for your children in terms of violence and all that...

Regarding the article that flash game was not the whole story he just wanted to start something especially with the upcoming release of GTA IV that's why he tried to link it...

The truth is the US goverment finds it ''easier'' (more like profitable to me) to bann stuff like games rather than guns...so we have to seat back and watch more fun and entertainment being thrown away.

Hint to everybody: Tell me you didnt find it suspicious that Rockstar wanted to make IV more....''serious'' all of the sudden.....they have changed the number one ingredient of GTA... immature violence...in my opinion..it all has to do the ESRB rating rockstar is trying to avoid further lawsuits...

Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the V-Tech killer had nothing to do with video games, he practiced on a rifle range.

Why do these Senators persist in dragging our preferred pastime through these clearly fabricated mud pits of theirs... Perhaps its a way for thm to stay on top of the political "heap"...

Perhaps Politicians and Lawyers have their own special circle of hell waiting for them, we can only hope. LOL

Yes. Blame the guns. Ban them in all but the most strict circumstances. Pass all sorts of laws against them.

Because the people who are willing to violate the law and KILL PEOPLE certainly aren't willing to violate the law to steal a f*cking gun.

Idiot.

Excuse ME ???

If you had reasonable gun laws in the US of f@%king A there wouldn't be guns in a large portion of every civilian home in the first place available for people to steal.

The rest of the world manages fine without the need for guns for "self protection", dealing with the same levels of multi cultural integration, if not more ....

no, the problem in America is above all the guns laws, and then Americans themselves.

You, my friend, are the idiot.

Excuse me, do your research. America has more immigrants per year than every other country in the world combined. I'd say the only problem with America are the idiots coming in from other countries who suddenly feel empowered by ownership of firearms. The rest of the world manages fine because they don't have an influx morons entering their country daily who think they can get rich just by living in this country, and then are thrust into gangs because they realize it sucks here as much as anywhere else.

You, my friend, are the idiot.

# oh great...Guest 2007-05-23 08:30
thanks for waisting more tax dollars on faulty legislation and programs (Parent-Teacher Anti-Violence Awareness Program, seriously, wtf, oh thats right, the sentors probably had some friends and needed do some patronage). When will someone finally kick the beaurocrats out of the government. Hopefully before China takes all our jobs.

In case you didn't know. The only time legislation that adds new programs is created in America its really only because someone in office needed to do a little patronage in order to keep the soft money flowing from the 527 comittees. This has absolutely nothing to do with guns, violence, or videogames. Just money. And no, banning money wont solve our the problem either. idiot.

Video games is a way to let people take out there frustration in life or help peole set there mine on something else other then the world we live in. for the parents out there who really care about the content that there child sees and plays you could always put a lock on their system that they are playing. So just let us play our games!!

IN PEACE!!

Statements from people who knew Mr. Cho indicate that the last time he played a video game was back in High-school - about four years before the shooting incident took place.

A lot could have happened in that sime span, and it's very disheartening to know that nobody in politics seems interested in analyzing the rest of those 1,400+ days...

# A small speech/rantGuest 2007-05-23 12:15
Wow just another step on the road to a dictatorship also people you need to realize THE WORLD IS A VIOLENT PLACE... in NYC they should realize if they take violent games away a kid can still walk down the street and see someone stabbed... I mean god sake people have we really come down to this? dose the American government not have better things to worry about? no once again take a stab at the media for the words problems... Great job way to set and example for the kids now every killer on the planet earth can blame a game for making them kill. People if someone is going to kill someone they will do it rather they played a game or not... Just goes to show that we really do need some god damn new people in office not these old school guys who are stuck in the past... Games are something that people need to accept. They are an example in the freedom of speech. And last of all to the guy who made the V-Tech game good ***** bro I tip my hat to that guy he exploited something and became famous for it just like any politician can and do every election he is an American citizen and just another guy on the for front of the battle field for freedom of speech...
