DFC Intelligence, the analyst firm that dared to ask the question "could Sony go from first to worst" two years ago, is back with more confidence and more predictions. This time, they have a forecast on the fortunes of the three current-generation video game consoles and where they'll end up in 2008 and beyond.

DFC Intelligence says that 2008 may be the best year ever for Nintendo and its low-priced, mass-appealing Wii. The innovative console's phenomenal momentum from 2007 should be expanded by Wii Fit, placing Nintendo in a nice position to set the record for most units sold by a game system in a year.

The firm expects the Wii to finish atop the seventh-generation console wars with ease, saying that its biggest titles are yet to come to deliver the final touches on what's been an astounding run.

The battle between the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3, however, seems to be the more important one in the eyes of third-party game developers says the firm. In this regard, according to DFC, a change of spots on the sales rankings is set to happen soon.

The firm predicted that the PS3 should be able to overtake the Xbox 360 in 2009. The analysts say that this is due to the Xbox 360's inability to capitalize on Sony's 2007 struggles by building a lead large enough to secure its spot when the PS3 starts to rally back with major titles.

As it stands, the PS3 has closed the gap in monthly sales with the Xbox 360 even if its biggest games are still to come. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is due out on June 12, to be followed by LittleBigPlanet later this year and Killzone 2 in February of 2009. If all falls into place, DFC Intelligence says that the PS3 will finish at a strong second spot to the Wii.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Let's just assume all the data in the world was PROPERLY churned through and this is the most logical conclusion.

So what?

The stock market could crash tomorrow and this "prediction" would be dead wrong.

Ok, ok, I guess at this point one cold argue a planet killer asteroid could smash into us at any point in time so then what's the point of any news? So while this news is perfectly valid and I'm sure plenty of people care.....

Isn't it getting old? Or am I getting old? Same old, same old?

» hard to say

The x360 will have big titles too, like infinite undiscovery (that could sell well in japan on the few x360 they have there), Fable 2 (their biggest title I'd say), and surely other titles I don't know about.

But the ps3 will have the final fantasy games (13 and sv13) in 2k9, early and end, so this will BOOST sales in Japan. I will buy them also. I don't think Killzone 2 will be good, but it'll sell for sure. If it has 2 player or more coop offline I'll surely buy. And MGS4, that's the biggest for 2k8, I'll buy it since I love MGS4 games, but a lot of people will be dissapointed, lol. Those people are hyped but didn't played the other MGS games, so they still don't know that to get the best rankings, you need to kill nobody, not even the bosses, lol (no alarms and no kill, you make them sleep intead). But little big planet won't sell a lot, I'm sure.

For the wii, I guess it's easy to stay on top when you are comfortable there, but if they don't lower the price, they could get a blow in the face. The x360/ps3 cost around 399$ and the wii cost what? ~270$ or more since they almost always have "bundles". I'll surely buy the wii when the price drops, I mean, for 50$ you can have someone chip it for you (50$ max), or chip it yourself for 20$.

Anyway, if final fantasy 13 makes japan pop into the race, ps3 might win, but it's gonna be hard IF they win. If final fantasy don't sell PS3s in Japan, I'd say the x360 wins by a large margin, sadly for us, ps3 gamers and buyers.

well, on some points I don't agree. Firstly, Fable 2 isn't their biggest title. i would say it's GeoW 2. then I don't think the titles will help japan sales. They prety much abandoned teh X360 over there. Even a killer title wouldn't save them there.

Then to Final Fantasy:

"if final fantasy don't sell PS3s in Japan..."

This will never happen, since FF has one if not the biggest Hype there in Japan besides the Ninty things. Even if an Asteroid hits the world like ISOhaven mentioned, they would still buy FF13.

As for the Wii pricedrop:

THAT WOULD THE ARMAGEDDON for ps3 and X360. If Ninty is so intelligent to lower the price and even once think not only about the money, they could defeat both consoles in a huge fatal blow.

The fact is it's still not clear-cut who will finish second. You can make an argument for either one, because both still have good chances.

At this point in time however, it does seem like the PS3 has the upper hand for 08-09 in terms of exclusives. MGS4, LBP, KZ2, FF13 + others vs Gears of War 2, the only huge exclusive MS has announced. Key words there being "has announced" tho, who knows what else they have. If they announce another Halo game, to go along with Halo Wars and Peter Jackson's Halo project, the tables turn.

That isn't taking into account price drops either. So it's still impossible to accurately guess.

Why would they lower the price of the Wii? People are still lining up for it just to get one. They're still in high demand. Though I'm pretty sure this Wii shortage has been manufactured, and it's been working. I really don't see anyone taking over the Wii this generation, as far as PS3 and the Xbox 360, it'll be a tight race between the two until the end. I really don't think either are going to come out on top, probably will end up too close to call. Both companies typically go by "units shipped" anyway which doesn't give a clear picture on how many consoles either company has actually sold.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Some of you aren't taking EXCLUSIVES into concideration.

GoW might be a huge seller for the 360 but it WILL come out for the PC and like ALL OTHER titles for PC it will contain MORE content.

GoW for the PC kicked ASS!!!! The levels they added gave the game so much more value. Plus, you can play online.

So I don't see how GoW gives the 360 as much "value" as some people would think.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Let's just pretend for a moment that someone who is selling WAY MORE then the competition is "faking" a shortage.

1. If false - Well, that speaks for itself. They are simply the top console of choice right now.

2. If true - That is even WORSE for the competition. Not only are they stomping the competition they also don't even have to try hard.

Nintendo could make more Wiis, yet choose not to because long term sales would suffer. Therefore they ARE manufacturing the shortage.

"Some of you aren't taking EXCLUSIVES into concideration."

Great spelling of consideration by the way.

"GoW might be a huge seller for the 360 but it WILL come out for the PC and like ALL OTHER titles for PC it will contain MORE content."

The PC version had better character models and a couple new levels. It also came out nearly a year later on a system that costs 2-3x what you'd pay for a 360.

"GoW for the PC kicked ASS!!!! The levels they added gave the game so much more value. Plus, you can play online."

How would you know which levels they added if you don't have a 360? Your wii-tard brain also fails to realize the 360 version has excellent online play.

"So I don't see how GoW gives the 360 as much "value" as some people would think."

Of course not, but washed up mario remakes give the Wii oh so much value then?
