IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon has made an interesting prediction regarding the future of gaming consoles.He pointed out that the commercial success of the Wii may spur platform developers to create cheaper, less-cutting edge consoles in the future.Pidgeon pointed out that both Microsoft and Sony will be successful this cycle, but their current business strategy may be more difficult to pull off in the future. Here's what he had to say about this:
Microsoft and Sony will attain successful business on this generation, but catering to the early adopter hardcore gamers with a technology leader strategy will be difficult in 2011.
Interestingly enough, Pidgeon noted that the next platform may not even be a console at all. It may actually turn out to be a device to which software can be distributed via a network such as a PC, a set top box, or even a smartphone.
He added that the viability of this concept only started to emerge recently and would have been thought of as unachievable if one were to look at the video game industry before this generation. So before we go, here's a short statement from the IDC analyst:
I would have dismissed this idea as unachievable last cycle when only Xbox could provide a promising connected console experience, but it is entirely possible that the PS3 is the last bleeding edge console hardware we will see.

Anyway, I hope that next gen will cost less, and if possible, I hope that sony kill/get killed by Microsoft, so we could have only one console (I'm not counting the nintendo consoles since I never liked them... From the n64 to the wii, they are for non gamers...). At least I hope there won't be another one, like an "apple" console or wathever, I don't wanna buy 4 consoles next time (I buy nintendo consoles even if I dislike them, since there is always at least ONE game you want on it).
And a PS5 for 399$ at start would be really great :D. And even possible since the BD players will cost WAY less by then. (they surely won't need another format in 4-5 years).

Likewise, if you knew a damned thing about video game history, you'd realize that the weaker systems have always been the one that triumph. NES, SNES, Gameboy (yikes), Nintendo DS, Playstation 2 ... the weak systems that can offer good games at a great price are the ones that have ALWAYS won out.
And the final nail in your coffin -- the Videogame Crash was a result of oversaturation of video games onto the market, not outdated and bad graphics.

ok enough rambling what im trying to say is because of the wiis cheap development you would think more time would be put into maxing out the quality when it comes to story and gameplay but its quite the opposite for every good title on the wii there is a 100 crappy peace of ***** titles. right now the ps3 is leading in quality maybe not the best but they are consistent. maybe do to the lack of how many games but who wants to by tons of crap just too say look at my collection. the 360 claims to have 1500 game by may? i think there still above the wii in quality though but i cant actually name a hundred games off the top of my head. because of the the high install base and the low attachment rate, and large amount of crappy gimmicky games for the wii i say the wii is a perfect example of whats bad for true gamers. the word casual is been thrown around a lot i dont think catering to them is that great of an idea if its going to hurt the rest of us. honestly are the casual gamers the one roaming these forums defending themselves if thats the case i dont think you can label yourself as casual. casual gamers dont really buy games so who are they really helping playing wii sports. half cooked games is good for no one. if the 360 had gotten it right the first year no one would be saying this right now. i love the PS brand but even i think MS would of been a killer if they got it right(hardware problems). The wii's success only benefits nintendo the PS2 is still around because of the wii, seeing the last gen is still in. what controller are you playing brawl with?

1)While the Wii might not have all the bells and whisles that the other consoles have, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's cutting corners. I could easily say that the PS3/XBOX are cutting corners because they are focusing on all-in-one machines rather than just gaming. As a gamer, I could care less about a blu-ray player, PSP interaction, video downloads or
2) While it's true that Mario games are excellent sellers, this doesn't mean that it doesn't offer anything else, it's up to the devs to step up, and to be honest, the 3rd party support has been ever increasing since the N64 days. It is going to take some time to regain its foothold in this market.
3)While there might be a bunch of shovelware on the Wii, what console leader hasen't? I mean the NES, SNES, PS1, PS2 all have had a lot of crappy software. The PS2 has 9663 (http://forums.gametrailers.com/showthread.php?t+302005) games and still counting. To be honest, I can probably think of only about 150 good games.
4)Also, why does the Wii have this reputation of having a low software attach rate? Could anybody give any proof of this? I've seen actually the opposite.
5)Also, having a console that has a bunch of AWESOME games, but smaller library isn't good for gaming either - SEE N64
6)The PS2 is still around because it dominated last gen, it has nothing to do with the Wii. If you look at the NES, SNES, PS1, you will see that these consoles were still supported long after the next-gen was released. A lot of people have a hard time moving up.
I would also have to agree with Nomad Heath, " the weak systems that can offer good games at a great price are the ones that have ALWAYS won out."

To No Sense -- Weak systems lead to low quality games? Many of the "classics" were developed one weak systems. Weak systems win in console wars every generation because the low system requirements allow developers to focus on gameplay mechanics as opposed to trying to make things "pretty" for graphics whores like yourself. Ala, weak systems generally lead to some the of the best games available.
To answer your question, yes, I think every system should be like the Wii. Because the concept of the Wii was about innovation -- bringing something new to the industry. If every video game system brought out its own unique idea on how to play video games, the market WOULD NOT get "dull" and crash.
