Analyst: Super Mario Galaxy a borderline failure

Super Mario Galaxy from Nintendo - Image 1

Super Mario Galaxy may have sold 500,000 copies in its first week but research analyst Michael Comeau believes that this amount doesn't live up to expectations. Despite describing the game as the "biggest Wii release ever", he says the game's numbers are disappointing.

He calls the game a "borderline failure" when compared to the likes of other big releases this year. He compares Super Mario Galaxy directly to Halo 3 saying:

I think at the very least you would have seen this game sell a million copies in the first week. [...] If it doesn't sell at least 3 million by year end I would consider that a huge disappointment.

He believes that the disparity comes from the nature of the Wii's audience itself, saying that they aren't the type to go out "and buy a lot of games" unlike the Xbox 360 audience which caters to the more hardcore gamers (a sentiment he has shared before).

He also believes that Super Mario Galaxy's numbers might affect developers' confidence in making games for the Wii. If a Wii blockbuster that received so much hype would pull in such low numbers, it wouldn't inspire a lot of confidence for the success of third party games.

Itll change come Christmas.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Gee, another analyst with his head up his butt. Who'd a thunk it?

The only mistake Nintendo made was releasing this game when they did. You'll notice the releases have slowed down big time. There's a reason for that. Wait until AFTER Christmas and look at the sales again.

"biggest Wii release ever"

Who calls it that? It's just another Mario game. A good game I had fun playing but to date I've not heard a single person describe it as such.

» Awful

Michael Comeau CAN EAT A BIG TURD! what the hell does he know... I hate analysts...they know nothing..i bet he just sat there bored and said.."I guess Mario is a borderline failure"..im pretty sure he's a XBox fan boy

I can see his point, 500.000 sales in the its first week is a bit on the low side.

Especially because its a major first party nintendo game and one of its main franchises.

by Billie - 2007-11-30 07:42
» What about long legs?

Well I think that he is failing to take in consideration the EXTREMELY long legs that Mario games have, especially "real" Mario games.

» Is the Wii for Gamers or non-gamers

Everyone has been saying how the Wii is for the family, for the non-gamers and such... so many families and "non-traditional gamers" have purchased the Wii.

So is it any surprise that a hard-core game is not selling as super-sonic speed?

I have purchased the game, but won't be playing it until Christmas - but from what I seen, it looks like a game for "gamers", not a game for non-gamers like Wii Sports & other similar games.

by Billie - 2007-11-30 08:51
» Bout time

Well it is about time somebody referred to this game as a "hard-core" game. A lot of people still like to place this game in the "casual" group.

by Constantinecy - 2007-11-30 10:49
» Think about it

What requirements does a game need to fulfil to be called hard-core? Graphics ? Mature content? A serious plot? Mario does not fit into these categories really well doesn%u2019t it? Ok maybe the graphics pass with a push but compared to what we%u2019ve seen on the 360 and ps3 its basically nothing...

However, a game like Mario galaxy is nearly unrivalled to the amount of fun it can offer, the only game coming close to it right now based on the same genre and fun factor is Rachet and Clank. I remember the first day I spent on Mario 64 back in the days and I can honestly say it was one of the best times in gaming!

So I guess (for me at least) this game is not classified as hard-core but as an hell of a fun game to play over and over again..

this dude is right about s.m.g being a failure. this franchise game have been around for more than 25 years and is the mascot for nintendo. i have s.m.g and its utter rubbish and not for hardcore gamers. the games graphics are crap, the gameplay is nauseating and the control scheme gets old after 20 mins of playing with it. if a game franchise that has had over a billion people played it and the newest game in ins franchise hasnt reach a million in its first month, thats a failure. the mario franchise has been around before final fantasy franchise and final fantasy destroys mario franchise in everyway. mario franchise is a failure, mario party, mario cart, paper mario ,mario and sonic at the dumb -ympics. all garbage and not for hardcore gamers. mario and the zelda franchise should be as big as the final fantasy franchise but cause of nintendo and the idiots like miyamoto, they held those games down. the last time a good mario game came out was when mario 64 came out. nintendo has gone down hill since the wii., i mean since they decided to cater to non gamers and not hardcore and realeasing a weak system thats crap just like the game cube was.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

"if a game franchise that has had over a billion people played"

Try using facts to generate opinions. You'll get farther in life.

1. So you hated the game? What does your opinion of the game have to do with its level of success? Either get a poll of at least 1 million users or don't except your single opinion to get you very far.

2. FF or any other game has absolutely nothing to do with Mario so any comparisons are rubbish.

3. You've made it very clear how much you hate Mario games and the Wii in general as well as the Gamecube. So why would anyone care what your opinion is? Obviously millions of people like it just fine.

500,000 in the first week doesn't mean a damn thing. Plus, it's not enough information. You have to figure sales versus supply. How many disks where available to consumers? Were there any copies left? I sure didn't wait in line nor did I pre-order. During that first week I couldn't find a single copy. I had to wait two weeks.

As for Halo 3? BS numbers! They added up ALL pre-sales. Plus there were MANY customers that had to WAIT for their copy because they didn't have enough to pass out to consumers. Not to mention Halo 3 had the LONGEST running pre-sale in the history of pre-sales!!!

Also, this article is a down right LIE!!!!!!!!!!!! !

SMG sold "OVER" 500,000 copies in the US and sold 250,585 copies in Japan!!! That's "OVER" 750,535 copies in the first week!!!!!

"The game sold more copies in its first week than any other game for Wii and any other Mario title in the history of the franchise"

More then any other Mario title!!!! I wish people would remove their head from their rear before posting!

» re: Think about it

I can see how some think only mature, serious plot, and good graphic games can be a "hard core" game - but that is not how I see it.

I see a "hard-core" game as a game that takes weeks to play - the more you play, even same levels you learn more about it. I see it as a game that you get into so much that all of a sudden you look up and notice it is 5 hours later.... and you still want to play longer.

The majority of Wii games are "Party" games - games that you play with friends (Mario Party, Sports, Dance Revolution), games that you can beat in a day or so (Barnyard), and other similar games.

The point is Nintendo has been selling the Wii as a non-hard core game system (AGAIN - by my definition of a hard-core game) - and more of a family + party type of game system - so I'm not sure why it would be a surprise that Mario would not be a SUPER SUPER hot seller game - many who own a Wii would not be into those types of games.

by Stealth! - 2007-11-30 18:06
» Come one seriously

Who think SMG is Hard core game. That game is as hard-core as table tennis. I don't think its an failure but its not for hard-core gamers.

by Stealth! - 2007-11-30 18:26
» Its Funny

How no one cares to actually to the source and watch the video. What he talks about is very true, The Wii fans aren't aggressive when its about games they are unsure about which game to get if any, while PS3 and 360 gamers Are like" OMG there are so many great titles out there, i just don't know what to get with my limited money".

The sales of the game is really bad i was hoping this game would be booming with over a millions in its first day not 500,000 in its first week thats horrible. Sorry guys but this analyst has got it right down the to a T. It should be boost up by after Christmas holiday's, This was the game of the year for Nintendo and its really selling bad. I don't recall ever seeing a Wii game sell this bad, i hope SSBB doesn't get this much.

» your a failure isohaven

i useto be a n.e.s fan but nintendo always disappointed me. i supported nintendo through thick and thin, through n64, gamecube and now wii era but im done with them. isohaven, if you actually read what i wrote and opened your brain, you would have understood my points. i have a wii, i hate all the games i have for the wii, have you played red steel? garbage, have you played zelda t,l,p, graphics sucks, it was better for gamecube and it was boring. i also have metroid prime 3 and though i like the controls, it was boring and sucked. if nintendo had a more powerful system and did super mario 3 remake with and allowed me to use the retro controller, would have sold more than s.m.g. isohaven, prior to s.m.g, i haven't played my wii since metroid 3 and before that, it was january. nintendo sucks and its for casual gamers who does support a systems life cycle. hardcore gamers support a systems life cycle. what will happen when killzone 2 is released, millions of people will buy the game and its a young franchise. nintendo will fail and i dont care cause i have real systems that i will support and not a gimmick system. the last good game nintendo will have for a good year and a half is super smash brothers and then nintendo will be selling like 10,000 systems a month. nintendo already is a failure.

by Stealth! - 2007-11-30 19:03
» Not necessarily

A failure but the sales do speak volumes for this game which was supposed to the game of the year for Nintendo. I don't think the games is as bad as you claim it is, maybe your just getting all crazy without thinking. I mean if the Wii was such a failure explain why it sold faster in one year than any console in gaming history and is on top of the gaming market.

If you calm down and relax i bet you would think other wise, or perhaps your fanboyish rants will just make your self look like a fool.

by rpgpro001 - 2007-11-30 20:38
» whats people definition of hard-core?

people saying SMG is not hard-core probably think of halo or metal gear solid. mario has always been for the hardcore gamer. all mario games have made players play for hours on end, not small spurt such as "table tennis". and about sales, it should be on par to sell 3 million copies by year end, which will be it's biggest seller for a long time (unless smash outsells it, which is extremely considered a hard-core game)

by GamerGuyDude - 2007-11-30 20:58
» Don't say hardcore

The new industry term is "core" gamer. As in the core of the industry is supported by these kinds of knowledgeable, interested, and dedicated consumers.

So is Mario a game for core gamers? Yes. It certainly is. Is Mario "hardcore"? Hell no! The problem with hardcore is we associate the term with badass, explicit or violent. Mario is none of these things, however it is a game that most core gamers can appreciate.

by Jin Wu - 2007-12-01 00:42
» I think this guy's right

For all the hype and pride of Nintendo fans with the $199 price tag and this is how game systems are supposed to be, there's ZERO representation on the software side.

If you guys were actually keen to do some research instead of whining and blindly defending your system, you'd notice how "soft" the software sales have been overall.

Nintendo fans don't have for example, all the "shooters" for their system like 360 fans do. Nor do they buy all the "rpgs" for their system like PS3 fans do. For some reason this whole casual gamer direction has created an empty shell with which developers and Nintendo as well can't count on a title being an overwhelming success.

But you see, you can be sure ALL 360 fanboys will buy almost every shooter released for their system whether it's a piece of crap or not. It doesn't require a leap of faith or logic I guess to see that Wii owners are not genre specific. They, in generalized terms, don't buy all the games that fit into one category.

And if you Wii kiddies didn't know, publishers count on genre specific gamers to sell their wares. And if Nintendo can't get millions of SMG units running out of the stores at launch, what kind of sales do you think 3rd parties are going to think they'll be getting for their new IP or multiplatform releases?

That analyst, as much as I detest them, is correct in his statement. In the big picture, SMG is a launch failure for Nintendo and could be an overall failure if sales don't pick up.

And since there's still a "shortage" of Wii units a year later (yeah right!), Nintendo isn't counting on new customers to buy Wii systems and copies of SMG either.

» @Stealth

Although i agree on most of your points I will try to clarify something ...(based on my opinion ) The wii sold so many consoles and even surpassed both next gen consoles. If some one experienced failiure its the 360...why? because they have a two year old system with no competition for half of the time and the got outsold in less than a year by the wii!! (despite having the best games around!)not the ps3, that would be more logical but didnt happen. Second in failiure is the ps3, the high price although suitable for its out of the box capabilites still too expensive for the average gamer (pre-40gb ps3 time).

When the ps2 had 120 million fans and only 20 m of them upgraded to the present consoles what happens with the remaining 100m? They suddently stop caring about games? No the are waiting faithfully by the best system ever and decided where to go next. If the wii was capable to make them buy the would have done it so far...this also applies for the 360 and its 2 year life...

When the ps3 drops to $200-50 even though the 360 will be cheaper by then no one will be able to hold back the ps3...Say what you want the future is inevitable.

» think

the wii has a gaming console will fail, do you guys know what a fad is. i was on the wii hype train and soon got off cause everyone on there was old people, fat chicks and blind fanboys. i like all these people but cant relate to them when it comes to games.

hot chicks dont have time for games cause they are busy looking pretty with make up and nice clothing. old people couldnt care less about hardware specifications of video game systems but play casually to relate with younger people which is why the wii sold a lot and cause its the cheapest with a gimmick controller. blind fanboys will say anything to justify their weak wii system cause they are fools.

over 1 billion people have experienced a mario game in 25 years and the latest mario game cant sell 1 million in 1 month = failure.

millions of people have experienced final fantasy in 20 years and when final fantasy 13 comes out it will sell more than a million in 1 week. mgs4 will sell more than a million in 1 month.

super mario galaxy is a failure, and if this icon of nintendo cant sell more than a million in 1 month, why would a 3rd party game do better. nintendo sold cause its another tickle me elmo toy, or those giga pet toys that once were selling a lot for a year but then went away as fast as i can say n.e.s sucks.

i have a wii, most of my friends have a wii, guess what? none of us plays the wii and plays the xbox 360 and the ps3. softwares on the wii are rubbish, at least 90 percent of them, and the rest are mimi games. wii fanboys are fooling themselves. the wii is a failure, i cant wait for white knight story, killzone 2, haze, gta 4, gt 5, mgs 4, g.o.w 3, eight days, la noire, resistance fall of man 2, the get away 3, ff13, ff versus, and many others. i will gladly buy all these games.

wii owners buys one or two games a year. casual gamers like old people only play wii sports. wii is a failure.

» Graphics vs. Gameplay

I really don't give a **** about anybody's opinion cause the only thing that matters is what my opinion is and also people saying the Wii sucks because the graphics aren't as good as the Xbox 360 or the PS3 are ****ing stupid and doesn't know anything about Nintendo. Nintendo has never been about graphics in their games yeah they've tried to keep up with the graphics technology but who cares what the games look like as long as the gameplay is good which is what Nintendo has always tried to accomplish and yeah I agree the gameplay isn't always as good as it should be but rating a game low just because it doesn't have good graphics is just bull****. Games have never been about what they look like games were invented for entertainment I would rather play a game that looks like **** with good gameplay then play a game with realistic graphics with s****y gameplay, and you have to remember if Nintendo had never come along we would not have half the games we have today. I know there are a bunch of games for the Wii that aren't worth a **** but most of them are 3rd party games that is not used to the hardware of using the Wiimote and motion sensing. I've always stuck with Nintendo since the NES now I had my doubts with the Virtual Boy but I still stuck with them and they have made up for it by realising good games and pretty good systems so nothing anybody says is going to stop me from playing Nintendo games not until the completely **** up and go under which I think will never happen.

by Constantinecy - 2007-12-01 09:56
» Hey take it easy!!

Nintendo is a great company everyone ows them some unforgetfull gaming experience (mine was Mario 64 and Goldneye) . They have taken a successfull turn for casual gamers and they failed BIG TIME with the true core gamers. I dont know how long this success will continue, but dont fool yourself into believing that it will continue like this for a long time..no way...

Being so loyal will only turn back at you. Instead try to realise what you are missing somewhere else...The best thing...buy all three consoles!I bought a ps3 and I have my brothers 360 to use when ever a good game comes out like Mass effect which is awesome. I had nes, snes and the N64 but the last 2 Nintendo systems including the Wii did not convince me at all...maybe in a couple of years...

Well I don't think games get any more gay than mario, especially with that voice. Anyway the XBOX 360 and Wii sold around the same number of consoles and the huge number of copies Halo 3 sold with a massive number of quality titles already on the market proves just how bad the XBOX 360 is kicking the Wii in software selection and sales. I think Nintendo just needs a new franchise and no more washed up mario games.

by JeimuzuWii - 2007-12-01 19:03
» Wow.

If Super Mario Galaxy is a "washed up" Mario game to you, you have a poor perception of quality. I have a feeling Galaxy's sales will have raised significantly before the years end. I do agree that Nintendo would be wise to attempt creating some new semi-mascots.

Really? Check your stars, then check mine. You based ALL your opinions on your own feelings. You fail.

"if you actually read what i wrote and opened your brain"

My post shows I did. There is no need to open my brain to your own personal "feelings" of Nintendo.

"i have a wii, i hate all the games i have for the wii, have you played red steel? garbage"

OOOHHHH!!! I see, you're right. Red Steel PROVES the Wii is a failure. You're a joke to say the very least. Well, by all means if YOU hate all the games for the Wii then everyone else must conform. Good luck with that. HAHAHAHA!!!!!!! !!!!!!

"it was better for gamecube"

Thanks for that one. Proof that you are clueless.

"hardcore gamers support a systems life cycle"

WRONG!

"nintendo already is a failure."

Ok then, prove what comes from your keyboard. It's that simple. Show us ALL the PROOF that the Wii has destroyed Nintendo's bottom line. Do you even know what a bottom line is?

Really? Interesting. So even though the article is a lie and MANY more then 500,000 units sold, that does what to these theories?

Yes, Halo 3 broke a record. And? It also caused the greatest amount of bad publicity then any other launch as well. Since Halo 3 broke a 1 week sales figure all of a sudden people ONLY NOW judge an entire system based on 1 weeks sales of a single game?

» Actually

The 360's problems has been pretty much solved since they start making them with the 65nm if i recall correctly. As for the PS3 being a failure, its not a failure the game department isn't going quite well, i'll admit. But the fact 08 has many big time titles out there for the PS3 even the ones that went multiplat will help them. Why? Its cause many people who wanted a 360 already has them, which is why halo 3 didn't exactly sell millions of consoles like we all thought it would. And don't bring in percentages cause without numbers(meaning consoles sold before halo 3) to back them up it means nothing.

So im sure GTA4 and DMC4 will sell couple of 100,000s consoles maybe a little more. And don't seriously if the PS3 is a failure why has there console sales jumped up since that price-cut and the 40GB model introduced.

Hell The PS3 beated the Wii in sales for the whole month of November, which the lack of systems contributed to that.

Sorry but your post is a failure, your just trying to make invalid remarks about 360 and PS3. Just admit the Wii isn't exactly for gaming it was made for something more like Wii-fit and such why do you think the Wii game sales department isn't doing that compared to 360 and PS3, and Wii fans aren't being aggressive in games to get compared to PS3 and 360.

Sorry but if this continues the same route as its going the PS3 could have some major titles to get back in the top spot and 360 to continue doing what there doing and the wii could drop to last place. Mind you i could careless either way but the PS3 was built for long term Wii for a 1 or 2 nothing more.
