Analyst says PS3's weakness may hurt the industry |

Analyst Benjamin A. Schachter of the research firm UBS let loose on some bold predictions on how the console war will look like by 2010 and possible scenarios if the Sony PlayStation 3 continues to post underwhelming sales figures.Schachter said that overall, the Nintendo Wii should win the world over with a comfortable margin, though not in the utterly dominant fashion exhibited by the first two PlayStations. He says the Wii should sell 51.9 million units, the PS3 will sell around 47.2 million, while the Xbox 360 should lag behind with 38.9 million units sold. All of that happens by 2010.
On a regional basis, the analyst claims that the Xbox 360 will ultimately win the battle in the US, racking up 22 million units sold, while the PS3 will be slightly behind with 21 million. He expects the Wii pace to slow down and end at 19 million by 2010. He believes something similar should happen in Europe where the Xbox 360 will sell 15.5 million, 14 million PS3s will be sold, with the Wii trailing again at 12.5 million.
The Japanese scenario, according to Schachter, will be much different. He expects the Wii to dominate with a total sales of 20.5 million while the closest the PS3 will get to is around 11.7 million. The situation should be grim for the PS3 in the East with just 900,000 units selling.
Perhaps the most interesting analysis made was when he said that "If PS3 continues to disappoint, it could impact the entire group," and added "we think Sony needs not only to make a price cut, but also buy or develop 'must have' exclusive content in order to drive hardware sales."
He added that the third party investors and developers who banked on Sony's console will turn out to be the big losers if the sub-par performance of the PS3 goes on. He also said that if first-party games continue to dominate on other consoles, third party developers just might get scared off the playing field, leaving a vacuum in finance and competition. Can we get real facts instead of some guy rubbing his head and predictions to something that hasn't happened yet. And to his quote "sub-par performance " wtf is he talking about? The Wii might sell good but it's going to be as dead as the Gamecube in a couple years, you want to say "sub-par performance" it's that console. :P
Analysts analysts analysts. These people get on my fuxing nerves. They say one thing and then they say something different. I.E. they said that the Wii is bad for the market and then a couple of days later they say its good. These people need to make their minds up.

It's not all one analyst, and they all don't have the same analysis... So you have to take EVERY analyist with a grain of salt, and look at the information they are citing to backup their claims....if someone is just pulling words out their ass, and have no prior examples or facts to cite to backup their claim...they are usually full of *****... It's true that a top spot company can fall with a hyped machine that doesn't perform. Look at nintendo, NES and SNES were amazing, but the N64 came out and just failed and Nin lost their deathgrip on the industry...although it just alowed it to shift a different direction, it didn't really harm it at all.... Worst case scenario if PS3 keeps doing bad, all third parties just publish on 360 as it's cheaper/easier to dev for and more people have it....nothing bad will happen...
i think the Wii will probably be winner of the console war, but that doesnt make it the best console. Since its price is so cheap of course its going to sell easily. You can buy 3 Wii for the price of just one PS3. Second place will probably be Xbox 360, since it had a head start. Not only that, but the game library is full of amazing games for just about any genre a gamer could want. Plus it is still priced $200 below PS3, which means you can get the Wii AND the Xbox 360 for the same price of just one PS3. Of course, last place will be given to PS3. With the price being over half a grand, and the only blockbuster games to be released being sequels to PS2 games I dont see many casual gamers picking this console up. I do own all three consoles though, and if I had to rate which one is the better choice I would go with the middle candidate, the Xbox 360. With everything in perspective, the Xbox 360 can do everything the higher priced competetor can do, but also has the games to back it up as well. The Wii is fun for its price, meaning its good to know youre not paying a lot to have a new experience. At the moment my PS3 feels like an expensive movie player and nothing more, especially concidering almost all of the games I own are on 360 (only two arent, RFoM and Motorstorm).

all the posters who "claim" that they own all systems or both the 360 and the PS3... and there are A LOT of them here... your opinion is the most biased one EVER... and there's always atleast one person in each article... atleast some people who make the same claims try to sound a little bit impartial to make them sound a little bit more believable but a couple more post and you'll get better at it.
What do you want me to do? Fluff up my love for my PS3 so its equal? WTH...Its just my opinion, its not like im citing a fact over here. I DO own both, and I just prefer 360. It was cheaper AND it has more games to play right now. I just knew someone was going to take offense to my post just because I put the almighgty PS3 in last place. But w/e, I dont care.

i just swapped my Launch XBox360 (my Launch xBox as i like to call it) for an Elite yesterday to get a new warranty on it... it's now slotted in my 2nd HDMI input with the PS3 owning the other one. so please shove your accusations of fanboyism on me... you are just biased.. i called you on it... and you can't take it... take it like a man kid and move on.

Say what you like but why is it that the PS3 is available everywhere and NOONE is buying it?, whereas the Wii they just cant keep up with the demand it is such a hit and the Xbox 360 Elite has already sold out worldwide, the PS3 is in big trouble.

i think that the ps3 will do fine. it havent been 1 year yet and everybody is downing it. wii is cool i like it ,360 is cool but if you look at it doing its one year it suck the games that is and good games didnt come out until ps3 drop. the ps3 may suck to some but in one year that will change far as the price well it is too much for some but im sure some people are saveing up for it at the end of the year might get one with there income taxes lol. until ps3 reaches its one year its to early to tell to me that is sales might go up big games coming up and im going to E3 so i will be looking at whats coming out so see you guys PSN: roshod

The only region the PS3 is not dead last is Japan. 2 good games will not save the PS3 when most gamers cannot afford it. When those 2 good games can't sell well because there's only 3 million PS3s sold worldwide, they will go multiplatform, and the PS3 will be dead well before Phil Harrison's claimed 10 year lifespan. Denial is unhealthy. Analyists are predicting PS3 success are stupid, and so far, wrong.

And the PS3 sales in Japan have now hit an all time low of 10,819 (-17%) per week Compare that to the Wiis 72,393 (+4%) per week(and more if they could make them faster) and its obvious the PS3 is also failing even in Japan now.
Funny how when bad news for the PS3 gets printed hardly anyone JUMPS IT UP, but when any bad news for the 360 comes up a huge amounts of JUMP IT UPS are given?. Shows the difference in the 360 owners attitude - they dont jump up the PS3 bad news but the PS3 owners are obliviously and sadly jumping up any 360 bad news...

I totally agree with the analyst. The PS3 is just a piece of *****. Every should just buy an Xbox cause it is hell of alot better.
the wii owners and pc lovers, who would also hav reason to down the 360, better hope the 360 keeps up on AAA exclusives past halo 3, looks kinda gloomy after that
