An in-depth tour of the Wii interface

The Wii controller seems to have been poked, probed, dug, rearranged, and questioned far deeper than any console we know of. We're exaggerating of course, as we've just shown you the innards of the PS3 and perhaps the Xbox 360 before. If, like the Gold Coast, there's nothing more to know about the Wiimote and the nunchuck, why don't we probe even deeper and learn about the Wii interface? We mean, the real one.

We already know that the Wii plays GameCube titles. The Wii interface gives you 48 slots for channels you may add in the future. As we've noted, Nintendo will in the future, continue to make firmware upgrades to fill up those empty channel slots. The Wii ships with mini-game titles and what has been featured here is the Trauma Center: Second Opinion title. The demo tours you from the insertion of the Wii disc on to the slot to the three Wii system settings. If you look at the third screenshot to the right, the arrow actually points downward, which means one thing: although the Wiimote's cursor is considered more like that of a mouse than of the lightgun, it can be moved anyway you want - literally.

The screens give you a glimpse of the Parental Settings, Address Book, Add Mii option, the main menu, and the actual hands-on with the Wii disc replaced by a GameCube disc. 'Course the demo, though long, would illustrate the interface in full detail.

Earlier rumors about the Wii interface might have put you off. You can check out the following screens out of Matt Casamassina's demo at IGN to clear things out. We've highlighted the most important areas that might interest you about the Wii interface. Again, these are from the real demo, so you're seeing the real Wii right before your eyes.

this looks so gay no next gen showing here no nothing it is JUST getting into dvd gaming when ps2 was six years ago. This is bullcrap. you cant compare that to the ps3's xmb or even the 360 dashborad it looks just as ugly as the gamecube. nintendo has never and never will win with next gen consoles.

True, so true. And whatever with that 'can't compare to PS3's' crap. Last time I checked, the PS3's xmb was exactly the same as the PSP's. If that's the case then the Wii interface is just as impressive or even moreso.
