Microsoft's Frank Savage explained the ins and outs of the upcoming XNA Studio at the Game Developers Conference.

Savage rebuilt the old PC title MechCommander 2 (a title he was lead programmer on), he had an intern transfer all the old code into XNA. The outcome was improved build times, simplified cross-platform coding and made the entire coding process a lot easier.

Savage said that XNA was not finished yet but somewhere in between Alpha and Beta status.

Savage went on to say the XNA will also be compatible with PS3 and Revolution.

» What the *****?

I thought XNA was strictly MS - are they seriously going to license XNA to their competition???? Didnt MS boast how these tools will give them the upper hand?

» Getting a cut

Using this middleware would give MS a cut of the profit of any one who uses it. This could give them a cut of Rev and PS3 profits...

» To be, or not to be...

Its not a question of whether or not Microsoft is willing to let their competion use it, its a quesiton of does Microsoft actually think their competition would use their product?

Especially when the PS3 is going so far out of their way to NOT use an MS product by using OpenGL and Linux?

Why not make their Xbox compatible with OpenGL, that would make porting to other platforms much much easier :)
