Activision's Bobby Kotick: Game console prices may be cut |
Ó
Bobby Kotick has just released a strong statement regarding the future state of game consoles. According to him, companies such as Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony will be pressured to lower their prices due to the current state of the economy. In his statement yesterday, Kotick released these words:
With the rising costs of fuel and food and housing, it is more difficult to go out and buy a US$ 399 console, and I think it's going to put pressure on the console manufacturers to reduce their prices.
Well, Microsoft is already a step ahead because of their efforts in cutting down the prices in various regions, such as Asia, Canada, and even Europe. But will they do the same in North America? Who knows?
With the way things are going right now with manufactures of the 360, it seems that Sony might even feel more pressure now to follow suit and cut down their prices also. Maybe Nintendo will be doing the same as well in the future. That's if Kotick's statement holds true.
Aside from this, Kotick showed some concern regarding the whole take-over situation between Electronic Arts and Take-Two Interactive. He said that If ever this whole thing pushes through, it seems that EA will have a great power in the sports genre of video games. He said:
That's concerning, sure. When you think about one company in control of the sports category, with no competition from anybody else, that could be a challenge.
That's about it for the news on Bobby Kotick's statements. We'll keep you guys posted for more developments on this.

It seems Sony and Microsoft are getting ready for price cuts. Too bad Nintendo isn't for the rest of the year.
Well thats good news for me I hope Sony does drop the price even more down on the 40gb model of the ps3 if they drop it to $239 then I'm buying it after my lcd
During the last depression, Movie sales skyrocketed.
People were desperate to avoid thinking about life. Just like then, sales for entertainment will likely go up... People don't mind buying a huge tv and console because they think of it as an investment, and a lot cheaper than going to the movies a few times and restaurants.
"various regions, such as Asia, Canada, and even Europe. But will they do the same in North America? Who knows?"
Last I checked, Canada was in North America....but I just live there, what do I know?
until christmas.
I'd rather expect to see some attractive bundles for the 360 and the ps3 in the next months to increase console sales, but it sure would be nice to be able to purchase a ps3 for 349,90 € =)
LOL so true +1!! On to the topic. I do think they'll be a price drop on the 360 in the US since the Jaspers are coming out in 3 months I expect the price to drop then and the ps3 price drop shortly after. Though I doubt Nintendo would drop their price until 2009, at the earliest. With the average Wii being on shelves for 1 hour there's just no reason to drop the price, yet.
Why? Do you want a Wii?
