A trip down (the controller) memory lane

Ó

We will be discussing the SIXAXIS and the Wiimote here, but not for the usual reasons the fans may may imagine. Every controller, like its parent console, undergoes an evolution over time. And with each new generation, we see some new innovation getting introduced (like motion sensors).

With that in mind, we picked up this interesting list, titled "Evolution of the controller," which may bring back some happy memories for the older (read: 40+) gamers among us. We couldn't help but feel nostalgic, as we pored over the first few controllers - can you still remember them?

Yup - the one on the bottom is none other than the Atari 2600 paddle(s), with the Atari 2600 Joystick on the upper left. The full list also includes other memorable icons, like the NES classic controls, and the ill-fated Virtual Boy's pad. It also included the contemporaries like the Wiimote, the SIXAXIS, and the 360's pad. For the guys out to see their controller's lineage, click on the read link for the full list.

They left out key steps (like the analog controller SOny made for PS1 BEFORE the N64 came out) and have the order wrong (Sega Saturn 3D came out AFTER the N64)

The Wii (Classic Controller) is also a complete rip off of the PS1 Dragonplus One controller by Hori

And the Nintendo Wii (Remote and nunchuk) is de-evolution.

Try playing the Wii yourself and you'll see how wrong you are. And say what you want, but Sony would never have released their half-assed "SIXAXIS" had Nintendo not announced their controllers first. Besides, "SIXAXIS" freezes during gameplay.
