A Lesson for All Platforms as FROM Halts Work on PS3 Games |

The game developer FROM Software (Otogi: Myth of Demons for the Xbox) was rumored to have announced its plan to stop production of the PS3 titles Dark RPG and Black Blade. No reasons for the decision have been given. And this got us thinking.
Have you ever made something you were really proud of (a drawing, a lightsaber, a wedding cake), only to have a bunch of jerks tell you how crappy it was? My favorite answer is, "If you think you can do it better, then you do it! Otherwise, shut up!" Then they usually shut up. Or beat me up.
So, when FROM Software finally announces the reasons why they halted production on Dark RPG and Black Blade, we will be watching. But no matter what they say, I'll always wonder if what they really want to say is "If you think you can do it better, then you do it! Otherwise, shut up!"
Because it's really hard to make a game for a new platform, because a lot of times, fans will just point out how crappy a game is. And that's because of all the hype. Look at this:
- When a new platform is announced, there's so much hype:
- The PS3 will wash your car!
- The Nintendo Wii will clean your room!
- The Xbox 360 will make you taller!
- But when the first games come out we're disappointed:
- The game didn't live up to the hype.
- The game didn't push the platform's technology to its limits.
- The game looks like an old-generation game.
- We feel cheated:
- We bought a bazooka, but the only bullets available are bananas.
How can you make a game that completely pushes the technology to its limit when the technology changes all the time? It's really hard to make a cutting-edge game when they keep changing the "cutting edge."
So it looks easier to wait for the platform to be released before developing your game. By then the industry has hit its stride. Of course, the fans suffer because they have to wait longer. But then again, the fans deserve their fate; a game developer could say, "If you want it to be so perfect, then you better learn to wait."

Why? This site has showed more more cases of this recently with an article from IGN where several games were cancelled for PS3 but continue development for PC and 360. Obviously if they drop only one platform is because the risk, in whatvere form it may come, is not worth it.
I see dark skies in Sony's horizon, so many people quitting without the machine even released? Ouch.

Thesis - Except not. This game wasn't even coming for PS3.
Oblivion - Lack of HDD. But now, PS3 HAS HDD as default. So what now? I think they just don't see any good reason to port old game for PS3.
Condemned - Developers of FEAR are making new exclusive game for PS3. So it's even now.
Smackdown etc. - Yep, cancelled. But next one still comes to PS3. Plus, I don't see any good reason to buy next-gen Smackdown, it's just little bit prettier than PS2 Smackdown.
Endless Saga - Was cancelled yep. For PC too. It just sucked, that's the reason.
Killing Day - Cancelled. Not coming to PS3 nor 360. Somehow people just ignore this whole 360-thing.
Elveon - Cancelled. Still coming for 360.
Splinter Cell - Not confirmed
Alan Wake - MS bought rights for it.
Dark JRPG - ON HOLD, not cancelled.
Black Sword - Same as above.
Damn, I hate it when people sproud lies.

exactly! A game gets cancelled for the PS3 and it's all "OMG THE PS3 IS DOOMED!!!" but when a game is cancelled for the 360 it's hushed away and not talked about.

When the ps3 only is said to have 6 launch games compared to the 19 the 360 had I think cancelled games for a new system is worse then with a system with more lineups then the ps3.

The reason why its a big deal because with a limited amount of launch titles and some of those has been delayed why would somebody go and get the PS 3 soon as it comes out.
Also with the PS 3 changing its specs here and there developers are waiting because Sony still have released its final specs.
The reason why its not a big deal for the 360 is that games cancelled for the 360 is being replaced by something else and not many are being cancelled, halted, or delayed as the PS 3.

2. most people can only afford so many games come launch (like, uh, one or two). with a launch lineup of 6 to 17 games, quite a few may be left out in the cold due to the limited funds of the consumer (regardless of a $250 or $600 pricetag for the console, people still won't be able to buy all the titles they're looking forward too).
3. since when have any of the "cancelled" games been launch titles (with the exception of Smackdown 07)? as stated in 1 and 2, the market is limited, and the funds of the consumer are low. it makes perfect (read, brilliant) business sense to delay the release of a potential moneymaker until more people have systems in their homes.
4. we didn't see a big boom in PS2 titles being released until after it's first year, and the console had reached the 10 million units sold mark. year 2 for the PS2 was chock full of high profile titles, as developers (Rockstar, for example, released Smugglers Run at PS2 launch, a mediocre title, but a year later, released GTA 3, the game that revolutionized the industry). why people want eleventy million titles they know they won't be able to afford when a console launches is beyond me.
after having been through the launches of 4 console generations in my lifetime (NES/Master System, SNES/Genesis, Saturn/PS1/N64, and Dreamcast/PS2/Gamecube/XBox), i've gotten used to the fact that launches are generally mediocre, titles get cancelled randomly and for seamingly no rational reason, and developers will do what they think is best for their company to prosper.
all this "sensationalist" news reporting is reaching ridiculous levels. everyone with an ***** is spouting off their opinions, with very little actual fact or research involved.
as for this story at hand: it wasn't bad at all, surprisingly enough. though i have noticed across the net lately that sites everywhere are starting to warm up to the PS3, and some of them are even pointing out the virtues of the system. i'm still patiently waiting for the report that hell has officially frozen over.

why is every body complaining about the adapter. you dont have to buy it. you can save on the hard drive. the xbox 360 doesnt even have an adapter for old saves. it seems like sony bashing is the new in thing now. when ever sony announces a great idea people try to shoot it down. microsoft made plenty of mistakes and nobody picked at them. in fact everybody sat back and gave the system a chance. everybody needs to do the same for sony.

I've had it on for about 6 hours (GRAW Online
Also, GRAW hardly takes anytime to load at all....maybe you should get your facts straight.
Price matters, games matter, online matters. Maybe is Sony showed some pictures or SOMETHING of the online that PS3 will have...but no, they show a "online shop" that only comes with the game disc...rip off. Good luck on yoru 600 dollar investment.
