QJ.NET - Image 1Happy Tuesday, true believers! Some of you may have noticed a slight change here at QJ.NET today. While this will be welcome (and long overdue) news to some, there's a strong chance that a lot of you hate our guts more than usual. Yes, we've finally disbanded the use of Anonymous Commenting, at least for the time being.

I hear the deafening cry of "Oh noes!" but this should be looked on as a positive step for the 'ol Q 'n J. For quite a while now, the comment section of this site has spiraled downward into chaos, filled with vulgarity, racist remarks, spam, and general knuckleheadedness that was impossible to moderate properly. The worthwhile and valid gaming discussions just got lost in the mess.

It's our goal to provide not only a source of 24/7 gaming news, but be a source of intelligent conversation as well. You all can be a smart and opinionated bunch and we want to encourage that sort of  behavior, not stifle it.

So what do you have to do to comment? Just sign up and register. Its free, it only takes a couple of seconds, and there's a few added features that come along with being registered as well. You can select what kind of news to display on our "Blog of Blogs" page, you can choose to get daily email newsletters from your favorite section, and you can review your history of comments that you've made.

But since registration is a bit more mandatory, we would love to hear your input on what other kinds of features and abilities you'd like to have for your QJ profile, just leave a comment below or send us an email using the Contact Us form. Or you can just tell us how we've ruined your life by taking away the anonymous comments, it's up to you.

Now put down the chainsaw and go register. Just remember to set your email client (especially Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, etc.) to allow messages from "qj.net" otherwise you may not get the registration confirmation email!

The comments really went downhill with anon posters/spammers, happens on every blog. I welcome the change.

by Jake D. - 2007-09-11 09:07
» That ad

I know, I hate that ad too. But it pays the bills, and will only be around for another 4 days then the campaign is over and there won't be any more page stealing for a while. :)

They should also put a CAPTCHA in the registration and comment forms. Any SPAM bot can easily register a lot of accounts and post SPAM comments.

That being said are you interested in making money online....

Just kidding I like the fact that people have to be registered to comment. It's like that on almost all the sites I go to and it works great no more spam and whoo first post crap. Now maybe the comments can be a little more civilized.

there will still be stupid first posters....

by MTK - 2007-09-11 09:34
» Welcome

This is a VERY welcome change to QJ's policies, and I hope it remains that way. This site had really started to degenerate into a swear-fest. Hopefully, this will pull it back from the brink.

Really great move on your part. I really hated seeing all the trash talking between console fanboys, and the fact that they were able to hide behind relative "anonymity." (in quotes because technically, we're all anonymous on the Internet)

At least now if someone gets out of line with the comments you can take appropriate action, without having to ban an entire IP (or however it worked before).

Keep up the great work guys, your site has become a staple to get my gaming news during my work day, especially with gamespot, ign, and the like all websensed out!

:)

» Great change

Thank christ for that, It was getting annoying seeing not only pointless dribble in the comments but also people posting as other people by simply typing in the name. I know it said (unregistered) after it but it was still stupid :)

by Jx1 - 2007-09-11 09:56
» YAY!!

finally!

Glad this was implemented.

great move QJ..

now fix the advertising bug.

¬¬ i hate that it pops up right when I'm reading a page. :S

by Jake D. - 2007-09-11 09:58
» The "bug"

Unfortunately its not a bug, but a limitation of the technology of the advertiser (and just the way the page loads). But that splash ad will be extinct on the 15th and won't be back for a while. :)

by Taramar - 2007-09-11 10:00

The wii header is really, really ugly same with the ps3. The whole layout in general looks too cluttered in my opinion. Do you have any plans to change the layout?

» Hehe

Premium members never had to see the advertisement on the splash page hehee in your face members! LOL, but great on your behalf QJ, it was much annoying to see Want an awesome marketing plan and what ever...

by Jake D. - 2007-09-11 10:09
» Layout

Yes, we have some changes coming up as far as layout, especially the way articles are displayed on the front pages... and we'll try and spruce up the ugly Wii header, although I'm kind of fond of the purple PS3 one. :)

by nawz - 2007-09-11 10:10

Would it be possible for users to make their own headers and submit them for a review?

If yes, can you give the dimensions.

Thanks.

Yeah this site used to be bad. That's why I didn't feel bad about bashing the PS3 every chance I got. I thought it was funny when people would get really mad. Uhh it's just a game console?!? But bashing the PS3 got old and I got hammered one weekend and ended up with a PS3 and I'm starting to like it.

I'm one of the few people on here that's always used the same name though.

» Ideas

I love the change, as stated in a previous comment...

As for your request of other features that the users would like to see, I wouldnt mind having a signature, or perhaps even a member page with useful info on it like what consoles you own, where youre from, etc etc. Even just an avatar would be nice, and would bring more colour to the boards. Perhaps even a "Member Since 01/01/0000" under the names. That would really bring this site up a few levels, and start to really show that its a serious community for a serious news site. Id also like to see the bloggers more in the comment section, its always nice to hear them speak their minds in response to a comment.

I would lose the star rating system though. It seems that even when people give valid and honest information, if it offends either side (MS, or Sony) their stars get taken down regardless just due to the fanboys respective sides. What I mean by that is, there seems to be people who will give stars to the pro sony comments and take stars from the anti sony (or even just pro ms) comments, not on wether it is helpful or informative. They seem to base it more on popularity than actual helpfulness of the information.

Anyway, keep up the good work! I love the direction you guys are taking this site into, and can see great things in the future.

Why you give up your PS3. Really you should have gave it a chance since it hasn't been out for too long and a lot of great games for it is coming out. I wanted to play a multiplayer online game with you on the PS3. Bummer.

» good stuff

might improve the image of this site a bit... it's needed

by Thinker - 2007-09-12 03:04
» To Aoxomamoxoa - Agreed

I agree - it did appear as if the rating system was based on a User's Console loyalty rather than information/humor/insight value.

That being said, however, doesn't the rating system work in a similar way to GameSpot and some other sites as well, although I won't argue that the rating systems on those sites have their flaws as well.

One suggestion is a rating system along the lines of Slashdot. Maybe we could have rating categories, like Insightful, Helpful, Informative, Humour, Flamebait, etc, each with their own ratings? Anyway, just a thought.

Good to see a neutral and unbiased comment from you - much appreciated.

by ENFORCER - 2007-09-12 03:39
» HECK YEAH

It was about time. nice move QJ, i was already tired of this click here or go to this website to make "ligit" money or some other crap.

by Thinker - 2007-09-12 03:51
» To Common Sense

" Yeah this site used to be bad. That's why I didn't feel bad about bashing the PS3 every chance I got."

Just because other people are bad/immature doesn't mean you have to stoop to their level, otherwise what's the difference? Anyway, I don't want to preach (too much of that going on in the world nowadays, with not enough practising :) ), so here's hoping that QJ will be a better place for this.

I'm glad you are starting to appreciate (or at least understand) why people like the PS3. At least you now have the perspective of having used both machines, and now you know firsthand that it has potential, even though much of it may be untapped.

by Thinker - 2007-09-12 09:17
» Suggestion

Hi QJ Staff,

I have a suggestion for the ratings system as mentioned above: Why not implement a ratings system similar to Slashdot? I don't think that counts as patented technology or a patented idea :) - I could be wrong though. You could have Ratings categories, e.g. Insightful, Informative, Flamebait, Humour, etc. You could also have a Threshold system for showing/hiding comments rated above/below a certain rank.

Also, another thing that could be included is a Chatting facility, which would make it possible to chat with other people in real-time instead of just posting comments.

Also, and this is very useful - please get the URL posting stuff and the ampersand and equals sign stuff right - for some reason, this will get converted into plus signs. Also, sometimes, if a long URL is posted, part of it will be cut off.

Also, it might be useful if you guys could give a better editor for posting comments than just this plain Comment window - through which maybe fonts, colors can be changed. Other quotes can be highlighted.

Regards,

Thinker
