As the saying goes, you have to break some eggs to make an omelet. Well after the day we've had here at QJ Central, I hope everyone's hungry, because we've got breakfast for all ... as long as you don't mind your eggs scrambled.So what's the dish? As many of you might've known already, QJ.NET keeps growing and coming into its own with each passing day. As we grow, so does our audience (hey, that's you!). For some time now, the site has been dragging its feet, and we practically have to get out and push it to your browsers sometimes. That's no fun for you, and we're tired of having to buy new shoes.
Today we saw the first (of two) changes to our server structure, including a new addition. But like a little boy on Christmas morning, that brand new bike doesn't put itself together, and Santa isn't always the greatest when it comes to reading the French instructions. The short of it is that things didn't go as planned, and we should've taken the proper precautions and made offerings to the server gods... may thine bandwidth bless thee and keep thee free from lag.
Everything seems to be in order now, and hopefully the change in loading speed has been noticed (if you can tell, let us know in the comments - we could use the affirmation right about now). We apologize for the huge, unanticipated outage today, but now that you're surfing the site a bit faster, hopefully you'll forgive us.
And there should be another dramatic boost to speed by the beginning of next week as we make another change to our setup. This will result in a few hours of downtime for DL.QJ.NET, but like Santa, the plan is for us to sneak in while most of you are asleep, so leave out some cookies. Both DL.QJ and the front pages will benefit from this shakeup, but the front pages should remain unaffected as far as downtime is concerned.

i saw this evening (eastern) images weren't displaying. was that part of the maintenance?
It still takes forever to load for me. Let alone even find the server...
Yes - all our images are now being stored on a single server which improves the speed the pages themselves can be served. It was this new image server that was being problematic. ;)

Don't worry, I don't write articles, so you don't have to put up with my horribly written crap. Its just better than "Site broken. Now its fixed. Thanks." And the old trend is that a lot of you guys like to complain out of boredom and the thought that you could do better. Chill out, relax, have a good time. :)
Because then we wouldn't be able to afford the 1000mbit (not a typo) that we're going to have to upgrade to before the summer rolls around. Our 100mbit is maxing out.

Yeah, it is definitely faster. it used to take 5+ seconds for the pages to load, but now its up to snuff.
A tad faster...always a bit slow for a few days when a major release comes out (3.03 OEC and 3.10OEA2) In a few days it will be perfect for me again when everything settles back down.
sorry bout the double post, i was off on the time. used to take 15+ seconds, now it still takes about 7-10, but much better
One more thing... If you want to help keep the QJ servers fast...click the ads you see around the page. A single person does not help much but if all the millions that visit this site...it helps alot.
It loads fast for me, but it still freezes up sometimes after loading everything but the content. The advertisements, banner, right nav bars, everything except the content area load sometimes. And it sticks like that, but it comes up when I refresh. But I do notice it being somewhat faster ^_^
Way faster, I'm only on 768kbps internet and I can notice it.
since there are sooo many more NOOBS in here now that 3.03 was downgraded.. you can thank THEM! thanks NOOBZ.. for letting the NOOBS in and taking up the non-newbs' bandwidth! where's my damn NEWS?

In an article, there should be less figurative language than a normal written description of what actually happened. All of that could have been summed down to 3 sentences and saved a lot of our time.
You guys have made me really happy. I thought it was the ads making me lag. I have DSL so when I use to come here something (an error) or something would catch me and cause me to wait 10 minutes just to see the articles loading. Now its like 5 seconds GREAT JOB I LOVE YOU GUY!!
I coulden't agree more. I think one of the requirements of being a QJ writer is the ability to use as many words as possible in any given statement. It's annoying as hell.
A better way would be to say "Site broken. Now its fixed. Thanks." There I fixed it for you.

Yeah the sites are MUCH faster for myself now....and they dont suffer from that god awful, click on the link to a different blog, ads and top banner load and then it just sits there forever bug anymore! Great job guys!

I have been complaining for a long time that the ads were slowing me down. Now I am seeing major results. I no longer have to wait 30 seconds for the page to load.
Did they really have to go through all that nonsense? They should have just said something along the lines of a new server/faster link speed. Nothing about a friggin' egg. The same deal with Santa...
It shows personality. I don't mind the way write articles. It's better than them being monotonous and writing boring ***** that is too technical and impersonal. You people really complain too much. About everything.
Right..... and a tip for dramatic boost would be to SHORTEN your articles because writing a bunch of more nonsense is compacting your sql database with more and more crap.
The database is fine, its the serving and size of our pipe that seems to be the problem (and maybe yours too). But thanks for your concern. :)
Not to mention today (rather yesterday now that i'm saying this), there was a huge attack on 3 out of 13 of the root DNS servers that run the internet, the largest global internet attack since 2002. So needless to say, surfing anywhere sucked for most of the day, that's why there were delays.

Got a link to that info? I've had horrible packet loss through places like Savvis and Level3 - that would definitely explain things a bit! (And to think I'd been yelling at our hosts all day! LOL )

I do see a the change in speed thanx guys for working this out (but it can get FASTER).
First, let me say that I appreciate the server updates. I was in the hospital this weekend and the laptop they let me use could never load the original page. It just sat there spinning for 10 minutes before I gave up. And yes, I tried powering down and multiple attempts. I had no trouble hitting Ebay, Gamestop, Gamespot, Cheapassgamer, Gamefaqs, and numberous other sites. As for the trend in writing, I have just come to expect bad grammar, incorrectly spelled words, and continued uses of horribly mixed metaphor. The fact is that writing is not the same as speaking. If you start to write something the way you would say it, that's a good starting point. But please review your text and run it by others who you trust. Sadly, I don't think that I have ever read an article on this site that didn't make my inner English Major want to jump out and smack the writer. I keep coming back for the information, but if there was a site that could present this content in a well-written form, I'd jump. No offense, everyone. Take this as constructive criticism. And just a few tips: - To, too, and two are not interchangable. - Thier, they're, and there are not the same. - Noun/verb agreement isn't just a good idea. I'll close on this last note. Most of these articles spend sentences (if not entire paragraphs) saying the same dribble over and over again. You brown nose so badly in some cases that it's downright embarassing. It's enough to turn someone away. Have you ever seen, The Incredibles? You guys can make Buddy appear to be a level-headed individual with a properly-timed proposal to a colleague. Let's chill it out and clean it up, shall we?

Often it's not the page provider's fault for slow response but, rather a slow down or deficiency in your ISP's network structure. Be sure to test your connection's throughput at a few test sites such as bandwidthplace.com and others. Inquire to your provider if you find constant slowdowns occurring. Bottlenecks and DNS issues occur in A LOT of places throughout the Internet. Not to mention poorly configured servers, routers and on the serious negative end, DoS attacks.

Every other site loads very quick. This one used to be the slowest one but I have noticed that it has started to load faster.
