E3 to unveil DS2 and PSP2?

It appears that people are not only gearing up for the GDC next, but even for the E3 as early as now. Shane Bettenhausen of Ignition Entertainment (and formerly of EGM), is positing that there will be two major handheld announcements at this year's E3. Major as in new: DS2 and PSP2.

ds2_2

Concept DS2

Bettenhausen, otherwise known as Mangod, and widely believed to be EGM's spot-on rumor buzzer Quarterman, expressed his guesstimates at the recent 1Up podcast:

"I think the big story of E3 is DS2 and PSP2.  I'm really excited to see that. DS and PSP both existed in completely different sides [...] if those two put out similar products at the same time, it really evens the playingn field."

Could he actually know more? That's a huge probability, but whatever it is, we most likely won't be getting any confirmation any time soon. Still, it still ups the excitement definitely, huh?

You think Nintendo is stupid enough to pull a Sega and release a new system to kill off any development support for the DSi?

The DsI is not the ds2, and this has been confirmed many times.

# DSi is the DS2Guest 2010-02-22 22:04
DSi is a larger upgrade over the DS than Wii was over GCN.

Confirmed or not, it is a new platform with exclusive games. And releasing a newer platform with it's own set of exclusive games, would kill off DSi development, thus pulling a Sega.

So you started a fight over nothing, completely dodging my point. Nice job

exactly!! I go to gamespot.com evey once in a while. Whe i click on the ds new releases, there are dozens of games coming out every week. But on the psp new release there is nothing to show.
A few TBA's i would like to see released
megaman legends?
bloodraine?
devil may cry portable?
resident evil portable?
That parasite eve game?

Psp does not need new hardware unless this time they strongly take advantage of online and multitasking while playing videogames online!
No one, especially me and all the other true hardcore gamers give a crap about the thousands of crappy re-run television shows and overpriced mp4 movies sony has.
We want videogames!!!!! !!!!!
If it can do more let it, but dont focus all the attention on dumb stuff like digital comics and dlc gimmicks!

Stop sleepin on the PSP! Trolls complain about its graphics FTS!
The psp has the BEST portable gaming gaphics. So lets not be worried about that!
Ugh here we go again

second joystick
triple battery life (at least double, not shorter)
oled screen?
Higher capacity of umd, hmm maybe no crappy plastic covering this time, just the disc?
Built in 64 gigs flash memory (i swear the hardware needed to store this data gets smaller and smaller everyday)
expandable memory
bring back go-messenger! And this time bring it to the states (wayy better than skype because it does more on psp)
so then we'll need a built in webcam like iphone and stuff.
Removable battery!!!!!

Lmao the ability to buy another screen and easily replace it without voiding your warranty because it will be supported by sony. Now i havnt broken any psp screens, but iam more than positive a lot of people will bnefit from this.

And finally, if the stupid screen slides down again, let it be touch screen for menue and music selection purposes only! Absolutely no in game support!

Me personally i just want the ds to have bigger screen and sharper graphics. Gee i hope those "next gen" ds rumors come true. Something about nvidia graphics.

I'm always surprised at how little some people know about technology. OLED displays are terrible for outdoor use. They're bad enough on phones.
I helped out on a project where we built a (one off) mac tablet using an OLED display. Yea... unusable. LED backlight is the best and affordable tech we can get right now.

Iam always suprised at how RJ likes to comment on post that were meant for the best of all gamers. My intentions were great. Unlike sony, I want what is best.
Beside why do you think the question mark is there?
Im just making sugestions. H3ll someone had to request that feature. (and you best believe people will start requesting hardware features again, now that there are rumors of a next gen PSP and DS)

Fine then, lets just get a bigger model of the Go's screen. Now that is a good lookin screen. Better than the 3000's with no scanlines (that iam now use to seeing now).

OLED looks good on the zune HD, but i never seen one in direct sunlight (hopefully youll see where i was coming from, but i take your word for it).

"Check out the Oled and hammer video."

Yes, and check out the videos of the Gamecube beating tougher and having a higher build quality than the PS2 or Xbox. Look how that ended up.

OLED has presented the gadget community with a great phenomena. It's terrible technology with a built in obsolescence, the likes of which has never been seen for a display before. Yet people who think "ooo shiny, pretty colours!" seem to be the vocal minority. Having worked with OLED displays from all manufacturers in a range of price brackets - they're not good. No really. Look them up properly. Look into light and infrared refraction and OLED displays, ask people who know about them.

There are better alternatives out there. Go look for them.

# You know nothing yourself RJGuest 2010-02-22 17:27
Its not the pixel technologies its the type of glass or plastic you put on top that has to do with its in direct sunlight visibility, OLED is so much better then LCD in every way. It uses less power, its brighter, it has more colors and a higher contrast. Plus its very slim so they can add more stuff inside the PSP if they wanted, even make the screen scratch/crack proof with the extra space. Check out the Oled and hammer video.

Devs will only make games for PSP if they actually make profit off of it. A PSP2 would have been a wiser decision instead of making PSP-3000 and the Go. DS, I agree, is in a perfect position and doesn't require a next gen version. Even with R4s and Acekards, DS still making bank.

LMAO Yea because for PSP you "dont" have to spend money to get free games. You kind of "just do it" like Tiger Woods if youre in the right position.
I did a 3.03 Downgrade
and my 3000 is on 5.03ofw

The psp 3000 was suppose to fight piracy. They failed. The machines should have stoped there!
The machines released the psp Go to fight piracy again. If anything they did. Not everyone bought the pspgo, and not everyone buy digital media games.

We not stealing the digital games, just the physical games.

Physical games cost money to make money.
Digital, well you just upload them.o need for cheap plastic cases.

The solution. Half the price of everythin on the Sony network. And half the price of PSPgo.
I will litterally give my paychecks to sony for this. They wanna go digital do it, but lower them d@mn prices.

More people will buy cheaper high quality digital games.

On second thought lower the price by 75%, now were talkin! People will definitely buy more. If they do that skrew physical media lmao.
Its just nothing will have sentiminal value anymore, Keep your old game console yall, they are priceless.

No thats stupid, i want better hardware which means greater capabilities which means more devs will make games which means sony will hopefully push devs into making good games for it which means it will be awesome. PSP needs "modern" hardware, it COULD be less than half as heavy and way more powerfull..

I still dont own a flatscreen TV either since there isn't enough good programming to justify the expense.

Can't wait to see where we go next. I'm not bothered at all by graphical capability. I think both the DS and PSP work just perfectly. But if they can get some really good online features, LED displays, larger capacity media. It could be really good.

The thing about handhelds is they have a ceiling. Graphics will get maxed out for a portable 2-3" display and probably in a couple of generations too. They dont need to be HD, they wont need 40gb discs because of that etc. It's all about the innovation, like what the DS is getting at.

That's not quite true, PSP devs are lazy and only ~5 games maxed (meybe) PSP's capabilities. Seeing GoW, why other games looks so bad? There are many games but only few worth playing. With new handhelds games still be crapy with few exeptions. I think many ppl and devs think's "It's only handheld, who cares, lets make games as fast and as easy as possible"

There's nothing wrong with the Go hardware, it's Sony's digital distribution that's the villain - overpriced, limited and badly maintained.

If the games were cheaper via digital (say half price) and there were more of them (Pangya, Crisis Core, Ace Combat etc) then it could have been a huge success.

As it is it's just a huge suck.

Anyone who says a new DS and PSP don't need to be released at this point is mad. The DS has been out for almost 6 years and the PSP almost 5. Its not like when you had the Gameboy with no real competitors. The technology needs to be updated. I think both systems have time left in them, but this does not stop new technology from being released.

The DS could do with a graphical update (although some developers can squeeze out stuff like FFIV, Metroid Prime, Moon etc) and 2D games look beautiful on it (Castlevania, Kirby).

You are quite wrong about them needing updates. Visually the PSP is almost the best you can get from such a tiny display, the CPU could do with a boost as evidenced by GT PSP.

I like that you're using opinion as fact though. As it has been proven by Nintendo since 2005 and sporadically since their console introduction in the mid 80's; power means nothing in this competition.

Honestly, I'm still rawking my PSP1000 :P Every time I think about upgrading the little sucker, there comes a new model... so I've just up and decided to wait to see what they do with PSP2 before I make a switch.

Really, all I'm looking for in a PSP2 is a better control layout (perhaps just a second stick?), better integration to the PSN and such and then of course normal power increases for better lookign and performing games. Say what you will about power not being a factor... but I hold my PSP in high regard because of it's power. The fact that I can play games like God of War, Burnout and Metal Gear Solid with little compromise to the game design to make it work on a handheld is an impressive and welcomed feat in my books.

The DS is it's own beast with some great titles, but I've always regarded my DS as a machine I enjoy less. I don't regret having the system and I own tons of games for it, but if give an ultimatum... I'd stick with my PSP.

1. Would have the Ipod's Multi-Touch Technology on the bottom screen.

2. Graphics capability of the current PSP or better.

3. Keeps the buttons alongside the multitouch screen.

4. Has games that FULLY push the hardware RIGHT OUT THE DOOR ON LAUNCH.

5. Has an excellent slim and small form factor.

6. Can also be used as a multimedia device without alot of challenge and drama in the set-up process.

There ya go...

Metroid Prime: Hunters
Phantasy Star Zero
Phoenix Wright Series
Mario Kart DS
New Super Mario Bros.
Final Fantasy IV
Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword
GTA: Chinatown Wars
Advance War
Fire Emblem
Megaman Star Force Series
Elite Beat Agents
Castlevania

There's plenty more to mention where the PSP has literally no match against.
DS is balanced and keeps all the genres alive and well.

PSP Racers? Please.. They aren't worth playing.
Shooters? Besides bad aiming and bad multiplayer support due to the excessive cheaters... Not so fun
Fighters? I'll give you that one, Tekken 5 and 6 was simply amazing.
RPGs? Don't get me started there, DS beats that one in every single way.
Puzzles? ...PSP lacks good ones.
Silent Hill was pretty terrible on the PSP..

I played most PSP and DS games so I can assure you that the DS is the better handheld, the one reason I prefer the PSP is for homebrew support.

Metroid Prime: Hunters - boring as hell, 1 kind of mission over and over again.
Phantasy Star Zero - to many flaws to enjoy it.
New Super Mario Bros - ohh pls..
Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword - that one's nice.
GTA: Chinatown Wars - way better on the PSP.
Elite Beat Agents - lol?
Castlevania - that game is always crapy for me, don't know what ppl like so much about it.

PSP racers are qouite bad but Ridge Racer is great and for DS.. Theres no single one. Mario Kart DS, yeah right, meybe when I was 5 it could be fun.
After a while with Monster Hunter for example, it's hard to even turn on DS.

# True but..Guest 2010-02-24 16:08
There's no counter for the sheer amount of games regardless, even if you note the flaws on DS games, they wouldn't compare to PSP ones.

Also note that the DS has variety, the PSP only has a number of games that are worth playing that I can only count with one hand, though that's probably just a difference in tastes.
There's a bunch more games yet to be mentioned.

In the long run, I'll eventually find myself bored playing MH. (Call me a heretic if you will)

Metroid.. Granted, it wasn't great, but at least the gameplay aspect would beat PSP shooters.
Shooters on PSP are just honestly not fun to play considering how bad the controls on the PSP are.
Racers.. DS also has its share of race games, equally as bad probably, but it DOES have a good one, whether it's childish or not doesn't particularly matter.

Great - Editor's Choice

PSP
88 games

DS
81 games

Fair - Good games

PSP
223

DS
265

Conclusion: PSP has a little more top games than the DS, the DS has 42 more Meh to good games. Difference in the two categories is not that big. Both consoles have around the same ammount of decent games (PSP 311, DS 346), and the DS has a lot more shovelware, several times more, than the PSP.

I have to agree though, that prices are too high for new releases. Personally, I stopped buying releases, and only get those games when their prices have dropped, something that eventually happens. And I don't even have to buy them 2nd hand."

Actualy theres nothing to argue about anymore :)

The Ds doesn't need an upgrade. The whole point of the Ds is that it's pick-up-and-play and it's allready doing a fine job as it is at that. The psp doens't really need an upgrade eatherit just needs better game implimentation. ANother thing is that nintndo keeps rolling out new systems every year, people are going to start holding of buying systems and they would end up loosing profit andwasting money on new console reaserch so i really doubt that nintendo wold be willing to send out a new system just jet.

I would find it very surprising if new handhelds where announced...i mean the PSPgo just came out along with the DSI why put something else out now when these 2 systems are just fine.

It's about time.

The Nintendo DS was out around November in the year 2004..
The Sony PSP was out around December in Japan in the year 2004..
It's already 2010, granted there's probably not that many innovative ideas they can come up with the DS by now.
As for the PSP.. I understand how they could do so much better for games and the best games are mainly remakes or ports from other ones, which is sad.

They could do so much more, but they lack ideas, maybe a new handheld will push developers to make better games..
At the rate the PSP goes, it's practically a lost case with piracy.

People keep mentioning that they should make better games, but for what purpose? Most PSP owners download their games and eventually the industry loses money..
Piracy will always exist but it's much more prevalent on the PSP than on the DS.

So I hope they do announce some kind of info on new handhelds..
We need it!

Who cares? Even though it's not confirmed, you know people will buy it anyway. So everyone stop bitching.

I highly doubt that the psp2 and ds2 will be made now. What happened to the psp go? That "was" sopposed to be the psp2. And in the Bettenhassen's quote, he said nothing about the psp2 or ds2. Its way to early to make the psp and ds obsolete hand consoles, the only excitement we should have is for new games that will be coming out for these consoles.

psp2 and ds2 is a joke.

I dont know why some of you guys are complaining about a new system. The PSP and DS have maxed out already and its about time we get a new handheld. The Phat DS was released in North America in 2004 and the Phat PSP was released in 2005. Its been around 5 years already its about time we get something new.

Im waiting for the PSP2 hoping for 2 Analog Sticks and Sony would be stupid not to put 2 Analog sticks.

Technology is growing every day and its been 5 years already its about time we get some new technology! :

Uh yea, the ds is awesome. I mean if you are a 8 year old girl. Dude the ds was outdated before it even came out. A stylus? holy heck, nothing uses a stylus anymore. What, is this thing a palmpilot? I got news for you all, the ipod touch is a much more able than the ds. The games are a lot cheaper too. I have a ds lite, a psp slim, and a 2nd gen ipod touch. I have scores of games for each system. the idea that the DSi is a stepping stone is really sad, the cameras are really weak. Like .3 megapixels. The real idea was to add a better OS like the psp and the ipod have. Sadly, I dont really care much for mario titles anymore, probably because I am a grown up. And that is all Nintendo has. Read up, 3rd party development from big companies has dried up, except for little start ups who port shovelware onto these systems. I mean it is absurd, people complain about the UMDS, hello? Cartridges? Holy outdated, batman. The screens are tiny too, and the respond with the LL, thing is the size of my netbook, and literally hundreds of times slower. So many people line up to defend the ds, thing is trash.
