His current PS3-hacking case against Sony is not even finished yet, and already George Hotz is already planning something up his sleeve.

Needless to say, we're pretty sure Sony won't be all too pleased to hear about this one. Moreso if GeoHot, as he's more famously known, actually pursues it.

xplay2

As revealed over at his official blog, GeoHot is now targeting the up and coming PlayStation Phone, the Xperia Play, for his next hacking adventures. But to be able to pull that off, he's going to need your help.

Yes, he's asking for donations.

Because of Geohotz, some of my favorite games are unplayable online. He needs to get a life and do something productive for society.

a20a07, Geohot was not at fault for ruining your games online; much rather that was the little kid who thought it would be cool to take advantage of the open environment Geohot made possible so he could actually win a game. If other dipshits follow his lead then it's their fault; just wait a week for everyone to be banned so you can enjoy a clean game.

Love, someone who actually knows to do his research before making claims.

I think it's fair to say that if Geohotz didn't hack the PS3, people would not be cheating online with infinite health, aim bots, etc.

Love, someone who respects other people's opinions, even if he doesn't agree with them.

People are starving and he wants us to donate to him just so he could have some more fun. WTF...

Read the full thing perhaps? Or better yet, skip the sketchy wording here and read GeoHotz's blog. The funds would be for his lawsuit currently against Sony. It is one man and his 2 lawyers against one of the largest corporations and their top 5 lawyers. What money he does not use on his lawsuit will not be used for the Xperia, but after the battle for OUR rights to own a console (because Sony can sue you for putting a decal on your PS3 if they win), he will donate the rest to EFF.

What will be the point? The Xperia Play is ANDROID BASED!!! Homebrew is already allowed. Thus, this will only open the doors to pirating official Sony content. Go look it up: GBA, SNES, NES, Genesis, PSX and so many others ARE ALREADY PLAYABLE with no modifications to your Android device. So what is the purpose of this at all?

The point is to give the middle finger to Sony. That's good enough for me.

Despite that, I still prefer Sony consoles over others, but I think they're being way too greedy, and not listening to consumers.

Like most companies really...

Did Sony ever listened to the costumers? Last I remember, no.

They went ahead on their own and tried PSPgo, it failed because they didn't listen to us!

I don't prefer Sega, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, it ends up which one has the best catalogue that suits me.

Actually, the PSP Go was Sony listening to the consumers. You know, getting rid of the UMD drive, making it smaller and stuff.
It didn't work out too well.

like i posted near the bottem of the comment list. all he needs is 2 things. hell not even that. in development mode the android is already open to anything with ADB, whether it be from the bootloader or even in the rom itself. heck a person can root it in 2 easy steps atm and have just the same amount of control over teh device that the retailer does. for example my android device already plays 3rd party apps. this includes the playing of doom, ps1 games, quake 1,2,3, and anything else in between. not to mention over clocking, modifying it so that the apps can be installed on an sd-ext partition, memory hack using a swap partition on the sdcard as expanded memory. the whole nine yards.all geohotz gotta do is just that and a so called hack is out.

i guess sony still have a grudge since the betamax, well if they want to have ownership of the hardware they should lend us or rent or ondemand the hardware and software, since i paid 600 dollars for my ps3 launch system at that time and then it burns with the ylod i think i can make a pretty good pinata instead of paying almost 200 dollars more to be fixed i could get a new console instead. thanks sony :-x

How has he made the PS3 better?

1. online games are now full of hackers/cheaters
2. pirating games
3. removal of other os
4. diverting Sony's attention from developing more/better games to solving the hacking issue
5. making the gaming community feel better about their physical appearance

What a hero! This guy deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.

Looks like people are queuing up to hack Sony's systems out of simple spite and vengeance now.. The only reason Ps3 wasn't hacked years ago was OtherOS Linux was enough to keep the hackers happy, but now Sony are completely screwed whatever they do and i'm betting there'll be rewards given to people to hack them as quickly as possible. But i have to say Sony brought all this on theirself.

The AndroidOS and Xperia's SonyOS will be different. Xperia may run a version of Gingerbread (AndroidOS 3.x), but it will also be modified and running differently when in game mode (see NGage). Also, even the 3DS will have NDS mode and new 3DS mode, the NDS cards may work instantly for NDS games, but 3DS will have completely new security.

yet again, whats the point of trying to hack a basically completely open platform? only thing probably achievable is root permissions, which doesn't seem to require that much actual "hacking" as theres nearly everyday 1 new guide on how to root some phone that has been released for 3 days ago...

only thing hotz will be able to "hack" is int other words the android OS, making it possible to install custom ROMs, which is possible with almost any android based device anyway, unless hotz goes after the PS part of the phone, enabling piracy for the xperia play exclusive games, that would probably need some hacking but whats the point? it doesn't lead to more awesome homebrew, just piracy...

the phone just is too open to need any hacking, he could rather same some money and buy a NGP when they come out and hack that :)

From now on, all Sony systems are going to be hacked.

You lose, Sony.

jailbreaking doesn't do that. you have to get your phone unlocked. jailbreaking =/= unlocking.

and how does that hurt sony? if this about getting even, why would you allow people more access to the phone? that's retarded, geohot is retarded. no wonder he's being sued. worse hacker ever

not entirely. unlocking is unlocking.

jailbreaking is for iphone, ipad, ipod. for the use of or intallation of unsigned code or unapproved code on apple devices.

rooting is for android. android is an open souced project licened under apache. android is already open to ANYTHING where as apple's is restricted. the use of root gives the phone owner suer user rights on the device and file system instead of running in usermode. there is only 1 restriction to android and thats the bootloader and only motorola has been locking it down to prevent of installing other versions of androidOS, or installing of custom kernels.
so far all android based devices are unlocked to be used on any service (so far there might be 1 or 2 out there) with the use of root ervices a person can change the prl number or even the market.build for useing other markets from diffrent service providers.

a good example. my droid 1 was made by motorola it runs CDMA and under the verizon network, but with a little tinkering i have it running on a t-mobile network instead. why because i can.

Basically what Geohot is saying is he will do ANYTHING to annoy sony, If somthing is open source dosnt mean it cant be hacked, "hacking" by definition is macking it do somthing it wasnt intended to do, so if he turns a phone into a toaster he is still hacking it, same as if he removes sim card lock (which btw WILL piss sony off) because sony looses exclusivity deals for networks much the same as apple looses money on the iphone if any network works in it, because a company wants to pay them to lock the device so they can over charge on tarrifs/ data plans, so idiots saying that this is pointless and that there is no way to hack it are idiots, and need to go learn what hacking actually means
