Wired declares Gran Turismo 4 Mobile as vaporware

GT4Like a dispensable bit player on E.R., the team behind Wired has declared Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 4 Mobile dead at exactly 2006 A.D. According Wired's GameLife section writer Chris Kohler the game that was "the strongest argument to buy the PSP" is nothing more than "one of the most egregious [gross] examples of vaporware ever perpetrated on an unsuspecting public."

"Vaporware" is a term for a software (or hardware) extravagantly hyped by its developer before its release but never actually makes it to the market. There are a number of reasons why companies figuratively manufacture vaporware:
  • To see how consumers react to the announcement (if the reaction is blah, the project is dropped)
  • To draw attention from other similar products (consumers may wait for the vaporware rather than buy an already existing competitive product)
  • To improve a company's stock value
Sometimes the product becomes a victim of its own hype. You know, if it looks too good to be true it's probably vaporware.

We don't know what really happened to Gran Turismo 4 Mobile. But if you're seeking some sign that the game is not vaporware we can only direct you to the world's favorite source of instant info, Wikipedia. Its list of cancelled computer and video games does not yet include Gran Turismo 4 Mobile.

» um..

No it does not. The developers have said it's still coming out. I don't see how they think this is worse than Duke Nukem Forever which has been in the making for almost a decade.

Oh that's right, they are drones

by Node - 2006-12-25 08:35
» Down a bottle of wodka in 30 minutes?

If you can download a bottle of wodka within 30 minutes you need a smaler internet connecton.

by .... - 2006-12-25 09:23
» ....

Alex, the PSP GT would be better than PS3 GT, as there are way less PS3s out there than PSPs. They should release the PSP version and use the money from that to fund PS3GT

» me 2

I only got a PSP to run homebrew....

Me paying for almost $50 for a PSP game (even if is good) is out of the question. For $50 I can buy same game for console with better graphics. SONY just thinks that we all stupid and haven't figure that out. Only bought one game and it was just because I need it to run devhook. I have 2 PSP and no plans to buy any more games for it.... not as long the over $30.

» ^Pirate^

Shut up thief. If you are gonna steal PSP games then you might as well keep that comment to yourself.

by GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-12-25 11:02
» Where have you been?

Most PSP games come out at $40 brand new, many starting to come out at $30 brand new, and there are dozens of titles you can buy for $20 brand new already...many of them good. I've bought 30 titles for the PSP, and the most expensive one cost me $32....excluding MGS:PO, which I just got for Christmas. I even got Metal of Honor for $18 shipped/sealed on ebay the day after it came out.. If you were smart enough, you'd surely be able to find that there are great bargains if you weren't so lazy.

I put gt mobile on pirate bay. Check it out http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3584009/gran_turismo_2_psp_portable_mobile

i know for sure there are no games that take this long! They are def messing with us. Plus i heard it on XPLAY that to have every car u have to buy it. and that adds up to $5,000 i think. not sure if its $5,000 or 1,000. either way its still in the thousands range and that sucks!

gay. i buyed the psp fo this game. i hope the jew that decided to stop dev dies like a *****a

by YES or NO!? - 2006-12-25 12:56
» Why not check at the source?

Surely somebody in de world must know if somebody is working or worked on this game.. Why won't the employers say anything about this issue?

by 2k1yellows2k - 2006-12-25 14:27
» Whatever. Doesn't bother me. GTHD has filled the void!

When it comes out, It'll be the 2nd game I've bought for the system. I have GTA LCS and some demos Sony sent me, never been opened.

I'm a homebrewer. Always will be. We get more use and our money's worth doing it this way than we ever would if all we did was buy umds like all the other non-homebrewers.

by tc - 2006-12-25 16:33
» uh

does anyone actually want this game anymore? I can think of a million more delayed/canceled games like Metal Slug Anthology that I actually want to play.

This is too bad, but while on the subject of vaporware. Does anyone know what ever happened to Devil May Cry for the PSP. I remember seeing screens of this when the PSP first came out. I am afraid that it too has went the way of vapor.

by Bert - 2006-12-25 17:45
» Give me a *****ing break

Polyphony Digital are a bunch of re-hashing, over-hyping, straight faced lying, work less/make more $$$, graphics whores... just make a god damn racing sim for psp that runs smoothly and looks half decent, like you promised guys.

Nobody deserves exclusive liscences in the videogame world.

by drew4237 - 2006-12-25 18:15
» Yeah

I think that this game would be sweet on the psp. the psp is not really made for fps games, but racing games are fine on it so GT on a psp would be awesome

by meth0dical - 2006-12-25 21:34
» to all you "homebrewers" that posted before me

you're not true homebrewers. you are thieves and pirates.

homebrewers support the underground scene of developing FREE GAMES AND APPLICATIONS for the psp. you fools download illegal games and cause "vaporware" games to happen because the $40 you're too cheap to spend on a game does not make it's way back to the developers making these damn games. and then you ***** about games that were announced but never released.

please dont call yourself homebrewers because you bring down what could be an awesome scene and jeopardize what we do have, and the future devopment of REAL HOMEBREW.

It shows.

» Not at all...

Sony and Polyphony Digital have stated only a few months ago that they are working on the console version of the next gran turismo first and formost (it's more important to get that done so the ps3 doesn't see vaporware or a 5 year wait) ... they have claimed as soon as it is possible, gt4 mobil WILL be produced.

Polyphony Digital hasn't created vaporware in my experience with them - serious delays have been their plague - I suspect that we will see a gt mobil - just not for another year to year and a half easy

by conzie - 2006-12-26 06:44
» correction...

no u dumbass... homebrewers play games made by other users that make games and put them up 3 of charge. the real culprit is xactly as u said, pirates, but incase u dont no hu dey r, dey r ppl woh put up/download games that are currently in retail. Get it right!

by Mr619r - 2006-12-26 10:50
