Will Microsoft Buy Out Sony's PS Consoles?

The PS3 isn't even out yet but many analysts are not optimistic about Sony's future. Falling stock prices, less than spectacular movie sales, a failing UMD (PSP media) market, and the predicted high price of the upcoming PS3 could snowball into a low-cost buyout in SonyÂ’s future. Brent Kirkwood, writing for Bona Fide Reviews, thinks Microsoft will take advantage of Sony's financial woe.

"I personally see this happening regardless of the Blu-ray market by 2014. I for one can just see the looks on SonyÂ’s main competitors faces at this time, all the gleaming in the world coming from One Microsoft way ( the road both Nintendo HQ and MS HQ reside on) as this could turn out to be the largest upset in consumer electronics history," he says. "Will the next Playstation... post-PS3 run a Microsoft operating system and have backwards compatibility for PS1 PS2 PS3 Xbox and Xbox360?... this doesnÂ’t seem as far fetched as it once did." Don't say he didn't warn you.

sure they could buy them, a takeover would be possible if, it was in the best interests of the consumer, now as much as I like MS and as much as I have a love/hate relationship with sony. I do not think its in the consumer interest for a MS takeover. |Lets face it, sony lie to the consumers, the new ps3 your basically paying for blu ray and cell and a overclocked 7800GTX. Now dont get me wrong cell will be fast, calculating physics cell will be amazing. But rsx vs xenon and xenon wips the rsx arse. Its all about price points, im not paying more than 300 quid for a ps3 its just not worth it when the 360 is cheaper.

I see this happening by the end of the month. Also there are rumors that Microsoft will buy the rights to make the IPOD. They will rename it the mspod and will crash every 5 mins.

Seriously do people even think before they go shooting their mouth off Sony would never sellout to MS. Sony is not doing that bad they seem to have the most powerful next gen system and theirs will be backward compatible unlike the 360 that needs special upgrades to allow a handful of games original XBOX games to play on it. I had no interest in getting a 360 even though I have an XBOX so it isn't an issue of me being a fanboy of any one system since I have all 3 current gen systems plus a PSP and DS. It's just that with all the problems, the lack of backward compatibility, and the fact that there wasn't that much of an improvement over the original to justify the price. I will get a PS3 even if it is $500 because it can play all my PS2 games and it seems to be a greater improvement over the PS2.

733 mhz celeron vs 3 x 3.2ghz power pc cores

geforce 3 vs xenon = unified shaders, directx10 support (100 times better than dx9 which the rsx uses in the ps3), geomtry shaders support, edram.

im not being funny hear and crashing your hopes and dreams. But if you where to compare dx9 which the ps3 is using and dx10 which the 360 has support for, not full support mind you but enough. And you really will see that the rsx is a generation behind the xenon. It really is. So in terms of the jump from old gen to new gen. The 360 is a generation ahead of the xbox, but the ps3 is still stuck in dx9 territory.

Sony with a microsoft OS? In your dreams. Although Sony's going through a rough patch, and making pretty stupid decisions, it'll all unfold when PS3 releases. Even though Blu-Ray is pretty much the priciest thing around, the PS3 hype 6 months prior to release is to me, already dominating 360's stock-issued release. I've played 360, and it has its flaws too. I blew my friends up plugging it into a 220 wall outlet. PS3 is dual voltage....so....save $600 and plug the console into german AND american outlets. Smart. Although that has nothing to do with Microsoft, I think that Bill Gates should stick to Windows, and let consoles fight with the Japs

the only realtime stuff sony has shown you is a few ducks in a bath, a crap ut2007 demo, a car game that looked nothing like the cg they showed you at last e3 and some *****y little tech demos. And the reason why your not seing the dx10 leap is because obviosly the 1st wave of games have been in development for years and so started thier life on dx9. Have you seen gears of war on the 360?, ghost recon?, huxley? they are "realtime" and look alot better than anything sony have shown you in "realtime".

How often have you heard of a PS2 crashing or overheating? As far as it having all this great power where the heck are the games that are taking advantage of it? You can have the most powerful system in the world but with no games that utilize it then it is just waisted. The 360 has not showed me anything new yet. Most of the 360 games can be bought on the XBOX or other systems granted they might not look as nice as on the 360 but, at least for me eye candy is not the number 1 reason I get a game. Heck some of the PS2 games look just as good as some of the 360 ones.

If Microsoft does buy out Nintendo and Sony, it would be a VERY bad thing for consumers. The "One Microsoft Way" is one the worst things ever to happen in the market. There are zillions of problems in IT, all thanks to Microsoft. Thank Microsoft for viruses, and overpriced software in general. In the OS market, take your time to look around and realise for how long has Windows been way OVERpriced. Were it not for a few competitors who managed to get introduced in the market (against all odds, may I add), there would only be one version of Vista available, and NOT cheap at all.

Remember that a console's commercial failure can change everything in the videogame world (ask SEGA :p).

When the PS2 first came out, we had to wait for almost 2 years before seeing cool games (even Dreamcast was kicking PS2's ass).

And it's the same with the PSP, I'm still waiting for killer games to come. Each time I go to the store, there is nothing new/interesting to buy, thank god there is homebrew. That's why Nintendo DS is selling better even if it's less powerfull/sophisticated, at least they have plenty games to choose from !

When the PS3 will come out, not only it will cost a lot of money but I'm also sure that we will have to wait at least 1 year before seeing interesting games, killer apps that justify the cost of the console by themselves.

I don't say that Microsoft will kill Sony because of that, but the waiting period + high prices will certainly help them.

I don't agree with alot of the comments made so far though. For instance, better games on the PS3?? Just look at the games on the market now?! Bar afew exceptions you can get pretty much get any game on the xbox or ps2... next gen will only be the same! The third party developers are nearly all making games for both consoles as it is costing them more to produce the things therefore they want/need more profit back!

On the otherhand the xbox 360 still has flaws (i.e. the backwards compatability problems) but even with that if I look at how many PSOne games I play on my PS2, I can safely say that number is zero! When there is a decent game library, no-one will really use this feture on either of the consoles... What's the point in getting a next-gen machine if all you want to do is play last gen games on it??

This is retarded... if anything I'd say tha Microsoft is on its way out. The only thing MS has is the software business, namely their OS and Office suit. However they won't have a monopoly on the OS and PC market forever. The shakey stock market isn't sure of Sony's standings at the moment because Sony is taking some big risks. Releasing a new media format, a new game system and devoting most of their efforts around "hi-def" is pricey and not guarenteed success, coupled with the fact that Sony has kept quiet about everything pretaining to PS3 and blu-ray, the cell processor and who's backing it all, no wonder people are questioning Sony's ability to be a key leader in the technology business. Another key factor to the thorn in Sony's side is Microsoft and the smack they talk about Sony's and their "Inferrior" plans. Once Sony clears things up and lets us all in on their plan for success, I can see the public trusting them once again and Sony's place in the stock market revive.

Sony has one thing over M$ and the big N and that is game companies by their side. The reason why Sony consoles have been so successive in the past is because of their wasy to make games with near no restrictions.

The problem with the PS3 and 360 is that you need a Hi-Def TV to enjoy the advance in graphics. And Hi-Def penetration is still extremelly low.

and Sony's console rides on Blu-Ray .... a standard people aren't ready for and that nobody needs. Dont be suprised if both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD fail while Blu-Ray pulls the PS3 to an early grave.

I was an xbox owner last generation (the PS2 was utter crap)... prior to that i owned an N64 and PlayStation. I've been a gamer going back to the mid-80s.

I was thinking of buying a 360 but i'll wait. Microsoft has closed the gap on Sony in terms of game partnerships (RockStar, Square, Konami, Capcom...) but unlike North Americans, the Japanese public is patriotic with it's buying power. The PS3 could be a box of wires that does nothing but it would still outsell the 360 in japan based entirely on patriotic spending.

That said, I'd bet my first born that Nintendo slips in and wins this round of the console war. The price, the games, the standard DVD rom... Not to mention both SOny and microsoft are going to amass huge hardware losses over the next couple years while nintendo makes a profit on day one... Not too shabby.

I really doubt Microsoft would buy Sony, but they do what will it achieve? IMO, absolutely nothing. sony may have a good console on its hands. i just think that they need to look towards the consumer and realize that they dont need a BD, and if they want one they would buy it as a seperate player, like i will once i'm sure its the right way to go

I own a PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PSP, and Xbox360, and for me the best last gen console by far was the Xbox, for every 10 hours i played on my xbox, i played 0.5 hours or less on my PS2 (and now my PS2 has been completely eclipsed by my PSP, maybe my PS2 is going to ebay the next week to get some cash for x360 or PSP games). of course now i play xbox360 the most.

I can only laugh at people waiting for the PS3 like if they knew for sure it will be the absolutely best console ever, poor fanboys they don´t know what they are missing.

While im not a financial advisor, i'd have to say that Sony is not doing bad enough to sell out, if anything were to jeopardize their gaming run (Highly Unlikely) i believe they would merge with a company (Nintendo, due to past business ventures) before selling out. If you want to talk about a system that may not live to see a predecessor, you can look at the 360. While it has strong sales here in the US the system has all but completely bombed in Japan, selling a mere 1000 units last month. ok, i never owned a xbox because i looked up the 'best' games on the system and found it to be distinctly lacking. when i look at the 'best' games on ps2 i am much more happy to own one of them.

i firmly believe that ps2 and xbox, although they shared a lot of 3rd party titles, had quite different games in general and so different systems appeal to different people.

i haven't chosen to buy a xbox360 as i wasn't big on xbox, but i don't know if anyone right now can fairly judge whether ps3 is 'better' than xbox360 or vice versa... we can speculate, which i can see many people have... but we will have to judge for ourselves when ps3 finally comes out.

given the headstart microsoft has gained over sony and nintendo they should hope to have an insurmountable advantage by the time ps3/rev are released... and it doesn't look that great tbh, as personally i am going to work extra shifts simply to afford ps3 and i am guessing that there are many people out there who are quite excited about ps3.

As far as the ps3 being the future ruler of video gaming, well that's just ignorant. You have to take into consideration the fact that there is one next gen system already out and another on the way, simply because the ps3 specs sound better than the other two don't mean squat, as stated earlier graphics decided nothing in this conflict it's all about gameplay. Lastly for people who say the 360 has a great line up of games to select from, i'd like to know what stores you're shopping at, because other than Oblivion there's no game in their arsenal that has any real depth to it. Come on the only reason the Xbox looked better is because it has bigger specs in hardware than the ps2 or the gamecube.

And as far as I can see it Sony is playing it completely safe... looking an making a better online service or media center than microsoft's. Because thats the second great thing that Microsoft created for the Xbox.

The only way that the 360 can take down the PS3 is simply if all that has been released from Sony about its console's hardware, turns out to be completely false.

I guess the fact of making it a hardware monster gives you a lot of flexibility creating games and gives your console juice for a lot of years.

Because the truth about software (sorry to bring you down programers) is that theres no way to create good software without a great hardware....

Dude, you cant just buy a company. And Sony wouldn't sell to MS. They would sell their company to someone more reliable like Nitendo. Nitendo supports Sony, dont you see? Microsoft and Sony are agaiinst eachother, while Nitendo is alone, which works out. Plus, Bill Gates is almost divorced from the company.

Microsoft just takes everyone's ideas. Seriously, everything.

PS fans are so stupid.... How can u even compare the two if its not even out yet. I'm pretty sure u guys still live with mommy and wear t shirts choking the air out of you saying things like ATARI on it so you wont be able to afford it till mommy gets a second job on that corner i always pick that whor3 up from.. you'll still have to wait to she saves that money up and buys it for you on christmas, kwanza watever the Fu*k you celebrate.... MS has Xbox Live that right there should say it all... PS online is horrible.... xbox is bigger cause of the hard dive and when ps has a hard drive put on which u have to pay another 100 for its heavier... 360 was rushed but is goin to be cheaper, has Live and intergrates with Windows... Who better to do that than Bill Gates. PS has GTA, Tekken and Final Fantasy and thats it... GTA is a good game but it gets boring after 30 minutes... In Tekken they punch like your grandmother that still pinches your cheeks... Halo multiplayer never gets old, DOA's styles and originality is great, Jade Empire great RPG if your into that ***** cause your a virgin. Why don't you guys go to Japan and suck some 2inch wang

I think that Nintendo Revolution will actually take Japan by storm and narrowly outsell PS3. I think PS3 will take USA and Europe followed by Xbox 360 with Revolution close behind. I am an open minded gamer, I don't care where the games come from or which box it plays on as long as it is a good game! In any case, competition is healthy. As long as competition remains, the games industry will not stagnate.

Why are people saying the ps3 will kick the xbox 360's ass, i remember when the ps2 came out that people said it was the most powerful of the the 2 consoles, which i thought it was but until i got my hands on the xbox it *****ed the ps2 up majorly in my head and i never played the ps2 again, went and burnt it and never saw it again. ahaha. this is the dumbest thing. yes im a sony fanboy. all my electronics are from sony. but sony as a company is worth billions of dollars...and im pretty sure bill gates isnt stupid enough to throw all his money in one company.. so its bassically impossibale. xbox360 will gain a bigger market share then the xbox but sony will remain the dominent console for the next couple of generations.. but if sony continues in the same path of delays and gambles microsoft will win, and thats just the plain truth.

i like the fact tht quite a lot of people on here (namely ms fanboys) think tht microsoft can buy out sony and will 'let more homebrew onto to the psp'. Well obviously they dont no that microsoft almost got shuit down for being wat it is already, a power hungry bully, and if it bought out sony they would instantly be closed down for making a monopoly, case closed.

Another thing, all this 'ms will allow homebrew on psp' when was the last time u saw them advertise all there stuff for free, NEVER, coz they aint tht stupid, fare enough sony balls it up a bit by allowing demos to be run from the memory stick then withdrawing it but it was a good way of making people get psps and play sony endorsed stuff. If ms got hold of sony, the psp would crash every 2hrs and complain tht u need to send an error report everytime u try to open homebrew on a 2.6 psp, it would demand updates for everything every 2 days, and it would also cost u £2,000 just to get the os.

Some people just dont realise tht ms takin over sony is an impossibility and if they did do it, everything would just get worse than it already is

Jer Z Diablo... Just to let you know just about everybody who really knows how to use a computer or has a degree in some field of technology uses Linux. I'm just curious as to why such a fan of the xbox and microsoft in general would be checking out an article on a site called "pspupdates" unless of course to here some crap that Microsoft is gonna take over, I'm sure that Bill wants to take over the world but it's just not gonna happen. We're talking about Microsoft buying the Playstation brand. If the Playstation 3 is a complete failure(I sure hope not, but I suspect it might become partially true), Sony will have lost a friggin trillion dollars.

Anyways I'm gonna leave Microsoft. I hope the PS3 will function as an actual Linux PC like some people say. A nice replacement for a Windows PC.
