Where's the PSP Camera?

They're getting it... what about us?

Let us give you a little background on this story first. A few months ago, Sony presented a few slideshow images during their PlayStation Business Briefing. They said that several things were supposed to be released by the time October's being displayed on our wall calendar. The official first-party camera was supposed to come out last September. Well, so far we have 2.81 firmware, RSS audio, Flash, Chinese font, and GPS/camera library files.

This is where the big and obvious question from PSP3D's Birdman1 comes in -  WHERE'S THE CAMERA?

He gives several speculations as to what might be causing delays. Most interesting is that Sony R&D might be delaying it in light of the new TIFF exploit. They could be taking time to patch up the firmware and the security holes or something. Most likely (and this is what we agree with), is that Sony might be holding back because of the holidays. The PS3 does invade this November, and interest for Sony goods will probably peak. Holiday season equals buying power, and this perhaps is what is causing Sony to delay their first party accessories.

Then again they might just be a bit too occupied with the PS3.

Birdman1 went on to worry about possible business problems for Sony if they continue to deviate from what they've promised to deliver. Well, we know you guys are tired and probably annoyed already with "doom and gloom" business analyst predictions about Sony losing money. Some of us here at QJ are sort of tired (and confused) with all the bad news too, so we'll just leave the Sony accessory delay issue in your hands. Well? What do you guys think? Does the delay with the PSP Camera mean that Sony's abandoning the PSP? Will this bring them deep doo-doo?

Anyway, we're tired of "this is bad for Sony" news, but we guess it can't be helped. It's all over the place; it's like a Pink Elephant in a room, or a fly in your soup, you just have to talk about it. Personally, I don't think this will be bad for Sony, after all they've got a console coming out. They could probably care less... But still, we just want that camera. There's official word on Japan getting the camera. What about us?

"There's official word on Japan getting the camera. What about us?"

The camera's coming out late October. USA and Europe won't see the GPS nor th Camera until Spring 2007.

And you don't have to be a Sony worker to know that...

What i think is that the software of the GUI(Graphical User Interface) will be introduced in the next FW update. Just a guess.

Don't you use the UMD that comes with the camera? I doubt the program comes in an eboot file.

Seriously? What's the big deal about a mediocre camera being "late"? It's not like there's any EyeToy games out yet on the PSP where you can use it. It's one of those things that might be nice to have, but I'd never go out of my way to get it. I mean, what are you going to do with it until games come out that use it? Take snapshots? Okay, but most current cell phones have a camera at least as good and most of us are already carrying phones around anyway. Cell phone wins, IMHO, because the camera is integrated and has similar image quality and I've always got my phone with my anyway. With the phone, there's no bulky add-on items that attach to a somewhat bulky game system only to snag on things when you try to take it out of your pocket.

Until games or video conferencing tools come out for the PSP camera, there's just no real point in having it, so why get bent out of shape about it.

Now, as for why it's being delayed, I'd hope it was because they are developing some sort of integrated flash on the thing if the PSP can provide enough power via the USB connection, that is. Cameras like this are all but useless in anything but ideal lighting. A flash would be biggest on my wish list for such a device, but it would likely raise price too much on something like this and make it even more bulky than it already is. My camera phone doesn't include a flash, but I've seen some that do, so maybe it's possible...

Huh? They had several working demos of the camera at TGS. The ad linked in this very article says it will be released on November the 2nd. So what's the big mystery?

Who doesn't own a simple digital camera these days? What could the PSP camera possibly do? Its just a PSP! Don't expect some rad xtreme camera game. Don't expect video chat. Its not going to happen with this flop of a system.

I have 10 DS games, and 3 PSP games. I've never beat any of my PSP games because they're boring as hell. Sony needs to focus on the PSP's games and don't worry about the *****ty accessories.

The only thing I've used my PSP for is watching short videos (which it is very good at) and listening to mp3s. I've never bought any UMD movies because they're too expensive and impractical. I'd rather buy a 2gig card and just rip my DVDs.

# wellllll...... The Future Of...PhoenixBh 2006-10-18 04:45
wellll i honestly think hat Sony is really losing out on the PSP, theres so much it can do (and i mean loadsssssssssss s, really believe me) and yet nothing is done!

On another note if Sony does not spicy things up the future of the Mighty PSP is HomeBrew, i mean really..... if someone with the knowledge and the right materials starts to think a bit serious they could make something thats actually worth buying (im talking like accessories n stuff) and the homebrew will then act as the code thats makes it all work!!

before shooting your mouth off, perhaps you should know first that the PSP camera won't be released in Japan until Nov 2 and the GPS until December 7, it's all in the Sony Japanese website, so how in hell is that supposed to reach north america BEFORE it's released in Japan, *****wad???

# it goes both ways..TheCheat 2006-10-18 09:13
i could care less about the camera as well, but the PSP a flop? That's far from true. I own 20 psp games, play all of the all of the time, and its a blast. I can't decide what games to get next, because I have another 10-15 more games I am interested in. I DO NOT own a DS though, because I looked up the games online, tried them out at stores and from friends who had them, and thought they weren't any fun at all and not worth the money. Some people like NES games, some people like Playstation games, and some like both.. After n64, Nintendo just hasn't been fun anymore for me..

# well...........Guest 2006-10-18 09:58
i dont really think sony knows what to do next with this product. they cant do much processes and such that the h-b community hasnt been right behind if not ahead of them wiht that or other accesories. i think they think the last big thing fo rthe psp is gonna be add on accesories. keep in mind their thinking wiht their wallets. everyones mad at somy for trying to get money off of ITS profit dont take m wrong they coulda went about things alot better but when u realize the balls in another persons court it cant hurt to take a peek in their playbook. sonys gonna try to get as much money as they can if they just realized that people r always gonna find their own way of tinkering wiht stuff maybe the h-b community and sony could work together or at least coexhist they can keep making cool products and well keep muying them putting mponey in their products but we will also find a way to make their product better;>. but the point is that i really wanna seee the extent at witch the psp is gonna be stretched so sony pull ur head out of ur a&& and lets seee what we can do with this little peice of hardware

# DS Vs PSPGuest 2006-10-18 14:21
You make a very valid statement about the camera for the PSP. To answer your question no I do not own a digital camera, which is why I am looking forward to the PSP camera. Now as for the DS vs the PSP. I own 13 PSP Games, and 3 DS Games and I am looking forward to atleast 5 more PSP games, while I am looking forward to only one DS game. The thing is I like the PSP better because of its game selection. My DS has been gathering dust for at least two months now, while I play with my PSP every day. It is all about personal taste and I choose the PSP because that is where the games I want to play are.

# My HopesGuest 2006-10-19 00:29
I have two things I would like to see. First, I would really like to see the camara hacked to where we can take unlimited video with it. I am hoping that it will be rather simple to do and come out rather quickly. Second, I am really hoping that Sony learns from th homebrew community and supply features in thier new FW. There are several things that Sony could put into the FW that would make me upgrade. First something on the lines of IR Shell would be great where we can play music while gaming and all the wireless streaming of things. Second the book reader, third a better browser would be nice, fourth custom fonts, gameboots, sounds and all that, fifth better movie player with all different formats, sixth a PDA app, senventh a email host, eigth, some kind of phone app too use bluetooth or something. All that and the GPS, Camara and PS1 Emulator I would leave game emulators, and Iso's alone and upgrade and be just fine.
