2. UMD talk
Here's some more talk about the already much talked about NGP of Sony. Thanks to SCE Kaz Hirai, we now have the information about the handheld's software format.

ngp-1

What you can expect from it is that you will get your games via custom memory card format. Like other memory cards, this should allow you to store your save data and downloadables in it. It's also said to have rewritable space, so you gotta make sure you don't overwrite your data indiscriminately, lest you want to start your game all over again.

How about an external umd player to rip the games into sd? o.o

no need for external umd player.

Sony could release firmware update to the old PSP enabling it to officially rip the game and the digital copy can be signed through PSN to the account.

Or something like that, but I don't think this will please the publishers nor Sonyز

Sony may not allow that, but you can already rip your UMD games to digital quite easily.

You just won't be able to play them until the NGP security is cracked.

Yup, way to reward the people who supported PSP the most.

This is like the PSP Go fiasco all over again.

Sony: we're in negotiations to convert your existing UMD games into a PSP go digital format.

PSP owners: Great! I don't want to lose out on my existing UMD games when I buy a PSP Go.

Sony: OOps, sorry you're screwed. You have to buy digital download games, even if you already own the UMD versions.

Hopefully sony won't advertise the NGP as being fully backward compatible.

why would any one buy a pspgo if they already have a psp? that's just retarded.

Also, why would someone buy a UMD-less device when they want to play UMD games? That's even more retarded.

Maybe you should ask sony. That was their plan.

I am not happy with this NPG thing because of the fact that I would have to re-buy all of the games that I already have. That is not fair and well because of that simple reason I may not even buy this system.

Yeah...... backward compatibility, what a way to chill out about it.

back in the super nes, there wasn't such a thing....but looks like that now is even more important that the new games itselves.

How can this be more ironic.

So you wanted a UMD drive in PSP2 when most of you didn't even buyed one to begin with.

Ridiculous!

Like I'll be playing PSP games on the NGP. Backwards compatability is nice and all but if I'm forking out money on a new piece of kit I'll be playing the games developed for it.

Just like with my PS3. If I want to play PS2 games I fire up the old PS2. It's not that hard and it's not like they cost a bomb to buy now either.

UMD was far from a good idea anyway. Limited to 1.8gb and a serious battery drainer. At least this time we have removable games in a form that will be easy to keep should they redesign the NGP in the future.

Lucky if there's 10% of Psp games worth transfering to digital anyway, so as long as they get those it's all fine. The most important thing is for Sony to finaly get off their arses and try to offer something like virtual console, it took them 5 years before they even got PCE and Neo Geo on PSN, and everyone was expecting to get all kind of apps and loads of games when they announced the Minis but like always Sony's got all these stupid restrictions that means you have to be completely confident it's gonna sell well before you make a Mini, and does anyone really think Sony's gonna improve enough in the next year to make NGP features competetive?

based on the hardware, ngp has the advantage. that doesn't mean crap unless devs utilize it.

I think any game that will make sense to benefit from the dual analog control, is more likely worth the transfer. I don't know if it will constitute 10% of the PSP games or not.

Some examples that I can think of: Monster Hunters series, MGS portable ops & peace walker. Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy Type-0 (Agito), Parasite Eve 3rd birthday, Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, Ape Escape...etc

So basically, any games would benefit from better camera control especially FPS genre.

Regarding Minis, well they reached more than 150 mini title but still that's really lower than expected.

I'm still optimistic on the PS suite that it could change that. Cross platform development will be more likely a reason to attract small developers.
