Traveller's Tales to Sony: make downloadable games cheaper or the PSP Go dies

Traveller's Tales founder Jon Burton has a prediction: Sony will eventually make downloadable PSP games much cheaper than their retail UMD versions. If that doesn't come to pass, Burton believes it could lead to the death of the PSP Go.

Speaking at the Developer Jury Service, Burton questioned Sony's current pricing strategy for downloadable games, which are usually placed at the same price point as their fresh-off-the-shelf UMD counterparts. The thing is, of course, discounts and retailer price cuts for the UMD versions can make them cheaper.

"I own a PSPgo but don't want to buy LittleBigPlanet, for instance, as I can get it 20 per cent cheaper on UMD from Amazon and could resell it once I'm finished with it" said Burton. "But if I download it, I get no discount, and no chance to resell - how annoying is that?"

"I'm betting on Sony making PSPgo games much cheaper than the UMD versions, or the PSPgo will die," Burton added. With the Go showing dismal sales numbers, making the games cheaper could lead to a turnaround. Well, that and giving the handheld itself a nice price cut.

like sony will do a price cut. They need to make the psp go 180 pounds and the games at the maximum price of 20 pounds.

I also agree with this guy. And also think this guy has balls. Dissing Sony's product and telling them to reduce profits. If Jon Burton disappears tomorrow you know who took him.... >.>

Not only do they need to drop the price of Digital Distro games, they also must lower the price of AAA UMD titles. $40 is asking too much for a portable system. When the PSP launched, the most expensive games (except for a few, Hot Shots Open Tee was $50) were $35. At some point Sony decided an extra $5 was necessary to further defuse any real interest in the games. I would be far more likely to make impulse buys on cheap games than I would when they're $40 each.

Don't get your hopes up yet. This man is just making the suggestion and this isn't coming from Sony. I expect Sony will ignore any plea for cheaper DD games and just continue full steam ahead like they did with the PS3 when they fought tooth and nail against the price drop and finally gave in. The sad thing is that sales surged for the PS3 and they're still to full of themselves to admit their price points are terrible.

Sure would be nice to see SCEA and SCEE doing the same thing as SCEJ, where every DD PSP game is significantly cheaper on digital than physical release.

They SHOULD'VE HAVE MADE PSN GAMES MUCH CHEAPER THAN UMD, this is because it's just the game it-self no manual nor box, so what's the point of wasting big money on a backup? I don't see, well I see waste of money.

That or UMD external driver from Logitech if it becomes true it won't really die.

Even with the Logitech UMD Add-On, it will die cause not everyone would buy it. Who wants to lose the PORTABILITY in their PSP System?

Prices for the PSN Games should be lowered, and we all feel that way no doubt about it.

Though I do have to give it to Sony to take the chance and move on to Digital Distribution with games (iPhone does not count), cause no one else was going to do it first. And face it, sooner or later its going to have to happen. Sony's just breaking the ice.

I do feel kinda bad cause they are losing out on money that's being spent to produce the PSP Go, and not many people actually buying it nor the PSN Downloadable games.

the digital games should be cheaper because

-no box(plastic)
-no box art or manual
-no shipping to retailers
- you get the point

Hell, I think Logitech could even market an external UMD drive for old PSP's that have had their drive stop working. That being said, I'm just waiting for Sony to inform Logitech that they won't allow the add-on.

If you look at the sales in Japan the PSP Go is pretty dead already. I mean, it was nearly outsold by the Xbox 360(!), and that in Japan.

People are wasting their breath telling Sony to lower prices, they just gonna keep their prices high and drain every last penny from us untill they think they got enough gamers and maybe drop prices, but the Psp go is on the verge of being hacked and the people they pissing off now will just turn to piracy if they don't sort their prices soon, it's just amazing how Sony gets things so right with Ps3 and so very wrong with Psp.

The Sony's Market Chief is an Ass Hole he could not plan with efficiency the market at the beginning of the PS3 and even today he doesn't stick not the PSP.

# Reduce price =/= reduce profitsGuest 2009-12-03 22:30
What many companies need to realize, and it applies doubly to those that are selling download products, is that reducing the price is not the same as reducing profits. If you cut the price by 15% and sales go up by 20% on a product with virtually no overhead, then you actually increase your profit by decreasing your price. Obviously some experimenting and fine-tuning is required: you might end up selling 50% more by cutting prices 30% or you might only get a 10% increase (a loss in profit).

It just seems like common sense, though. Digital distribution reduces overhead significantly and prevents used game sales, ensuring that you get money from everybody who ever buys the game, so companies should really want it to work, but with the disadvantages to consumers (no reselling and having to put up with all the drm crap) they really need to sweeten the deal.

I actually like the idea of the GO. If it was about $60-80 cheaper and if the digital distro games were about 25-50% cheaper (50% is asking a lot, but I think 25-30% is reasonable) I would get one. Or if it got hacked so that I could play my *ahem* questionably aquired games, I'd jump right on the GO.

Nice work on the finger. Looks pretty cool.

A price drop all around is needed. The Go might have some fancy tech inside but it's still lesser a machine than the 3000 yet costs more.
For great success it needs to be £99 with games half the price they are now. That would fare much better here.

cutting the middle man out. sony needs to make it cheaper because there is no justice in pricing a digital game the same as a physical one...does everyone also forget to mention the actual UMD?? lol

-no UMD :P

Exactly, that's what I've been saying/thinking on other forums. The biggest obstacle in someone's decision between a 3000 and a Go on the PSU is usually price. If Sony just made the PSPgo $200 to start out with, I don't think people would mind as much paying the $40 difference instead of the $80 margin with the 3000.

that is true the Eboot File has the same price as the UMD Counterparts plus as he mentioned the UMD could be used on more the one PSP 1000, 2000, 3000 unlike the GO the Eboot is only for one psp

Is it just me or is Sony run by retards? A five year old could tell you the pricing is wrong, and if even the developers who profit are revolting, Sony need to listen or they'll die.

Get a clue, Sony.

Thats not mario silly... thats Custard from Custard's Revenge...the adult Atari game. As a person who has had 4 psp 1000s and 2 psp 2000s... I have no interest in the GO system. Back in 2005, the PSP was a very inavative system. But technology advances so fast, its not the 90's anymore. A gamegear was cool for 7 years after its launch, cause not many things competed with it (Gameboy please...) put a PSP has been left in the dust. As a gaming system, its still among the best portible... but everything else has been severly limited by the memory standards of 2005 *(ie the memory stick). Granted, theres a 16gb card now... but how many have one? the Ipod already blasts these specs by miles. But i have to admit.. PSP is light years ahead of that Dumb DS... why do people still buy that crap? PSP's worst games have double the graphics of the best DS games.

I suport the idea that Sony should make PSN games cheaper, because let's face it, Sony doesen't waste money on transportation, workmanship and raw materials; so they are saving money and they want to gain the same amount as they do on UMD's, that's a rip-off.... ok I have a PSPgo, the size lure me to buy it, but the games should be cheaper period
