Top four PSP applications |

The PSP homebrew scene has definitely been one of most successful ever. With the fiery determination of our great developers, we've continuously broken away from the li'l box we're being stuffed into. Like a Phoenix, the scene has repeatedly soared from the ashes of firmware updates, flying towards the horizon of hacks and homebrew. Pardon us for being too poetic about it, but it's hard not to get sentimental about something all of us could call our "own".
In honor of the efforts of the developers and of the ever-supportive PSPanatics that flock the scene, we've been dishing out nostalgic posts like our li'l trek to the PSP hacking history and our recollection of the top five PSP emulators we've had. It's not in any way leading to us just savoring the good ol' days 'cause the scene should be deemed as a "has been", but rather a sweet look from where we all came from so we could all eagerly await the imminent bright future.
In line with this, we've come up with a post focused on reliving some of the greatest and most efficient PSP applications around. Yep, PSP is a gadget primarily created for gaming, but our hardworking 'brewing icons have made it into something its original creators have failed to do - a true multimedia device.
With that, here's the top four of the PSP applications we've been held to witness:
Number 4: DickyDick1969's PiMPStreamer. The name (both of the developer and of his creation) oozes with the "cool" factor. It's something that generates more than a second look. And true enough, it's one of the more popular applications around. If you could pull off carrying those words, you're definitely made of "some stuff". A true blue (black, white, or pink) PSP user has enjoyed the wonders of this application, with videos streaming in your fingertips plus recent tweaks that allow it to have FLV and YouTube support, DickyDick1969's baby is a shoo-in in our list.

Number 3: Raf's PSPRadio. Raf's application left a mark that boosted his reputation in any decent PSP user's eyes. It's the best way to enjoy streaming radio music from your li'l but mean machine while on the go, and with various and useful plug-ins like Links2 web browser and AFKIM, you're guaranteed to have an earful of fun. After being featured in an issue of Go>Play magazine, PSPRadio has been furthered cemented as one of the coolest PSP apps ever.Read: [PSPRadio v 0.38.12 released]

Number 2: AhMan's iR Shell. Here's another gimme. The homebrewing wizard that is AhMan has continuously pulled out a lot of surprising iR Shell features out of his hat. Yes, it's been long established that his creation is the best organizational program/shell for the PSP. But to be able to fill it with upgrades such as the ability to stream files via WiFi or USB, Devhook support, ability to listen to music while playing homebrew, and a really kickass GUI, now that's almost a miracle.
Considering its humble beginnings (it was initially made to serve as AhMan's wireless controller to his Pentax camera), it truly has blossomed as the one most widely used PSP applications ever. Despite its numerous wonders, we believe it still falls short of the next in the list which is...

Number 1: Booster's DevHook. Now if there's anyone willing to debunk why this one's up here, we're all ears for you. (Insert crickets' chirping sound here.) Thought so. If there's one application that truly changed and reshaped the scene more than any other (add all the emulators in the comparison), that'll definitely be divine Booster's Device Hook. Heck, it's influential enough to catch Sony's ire!Truly, the wonders of DevHook allowed users to enjoy the best of both worlds - the homebrew goodness and the tempting features of higher firmwares. Some homebrew created ripples, but DevHook's comparable to waves (we'll save the Tsunami comparison for the 2.82 emulation). Although work has stalled and it's only able to emulate up to firmware 2.71 so far, the very reason that if offers the possibility of tricking the updates someday makes it more than deserving of the top spot!

There you have it. Our own li'l version of the application countdown. There are a lot of runner-ups for this list, but we judged them according to efficiency, popularity, and the way they have boosted the enjoyment of having a PSP. What do you think? Is our cool cast of apps justifiable enough to meet your standards for the homebrew hall of fame? Let us know through your comments. Keep the Phoenix's fire burning!

It doesn't redirect links properly on fanfiction.net. I have to off the PSP and go into 2.71's Sony Browser instead. I own a TA-082 original 2.6 Factory firmware PSP. So I upgraded to ver 2.71 and am using HenC. Goodness knows when Crisis Core comes out and ends up being firmware 2.82 or higher I am going to buy a second hand PSP just so I can upgrade it and start playing just for that game.

Try copying a folder containing nested folders with the same name inside, like uoOgranizer. It makes a mess of your file system. Sometimes copying a folder will send not the folder, but all files contained inside instead, basically filling up your GAME folder with files instead of the folder.
You can't quit now AhMan, we need an update! Please? ;)
