2. OLED and 3G, according to Nikkei
3. Sony and the next step for portable gaming

The PSP2 has long been the subject of rumor and speculation, but to this day, Sony still hasn't made the announcement on what could be their next portable gaming device. That might change tomorrow, when the media giant is holding a showcase event in Tokyo. Here, they are expected to finally lift the curtains on the elusive device. But while we still don't have the official word, here's a list of things we did learn from the rumor mill.

According to French site, 01.net, who claim to have a PSP 2 devkit, the handheld will be powered by a PowerVR SGX 543 MP4, a similar type of quad-core GPU, which Apple also plans to use for their next iOS devices. The CPU, in the meantime, will be a Sony-modified ARM Cortex A-9 quad-core processor. It may also be equipped with a Neon Media Processing Engine (MPE) that would help audio and video decompression as well as improve energy consumption.

The devkits have a 1GB RAM, but since devkits typically have twice the RAM of those that hit retail, the PSP 2 is expected to have only 512MB. The sources also claim that the new handheld will follow the PSPgo in terms of its on-board 16GB flash memory, plus there will also be an expandable SD slot.

I guess they are making some gaming version of the iPod touch? It has all the features of the iPod, plus it's better for gaming.

Or is the iPod Touch the non-gaming version of the PSP?

Because the iPod has a touch screen and related hardware? That doesn't make the PSP a gaming version of the iPod. Not everything with a touchscreen has to be a ripoff of Apple either, nor the hardware. Also, the iPod touch is a pricey toy. It will never hypen up to be an acceptable gaming device. It's only real use in the gaming world is for small time-wasters like Angry Birds and Pong. Leave gaming to the real devices.

All really nice time-wasters with fail controls. Tilt the iPod, shake it, touch the screen... yeah that's real entertaining. Lack of a gamepad makes the iPod a fail platform for real gaming. The apps it holds are useful for passing time in the bathroom or entertaining an elderly shopper at Bestbuy. I have owned an iPod touch, and you know what I did with it? I took it apart, put it back together, and slammed it all across the parking lot. Did the same thing to the iPhone. Fuckin things are a waste of money. You want to play games, buy a fuckin console or an actual portable game system, not a simplistic shard of glass.

Most "sleek" things tend of be overpriced pieces of shit. I'd rather just have something that works and lasts a decent amount of time.

2 analogue sticks + physical media drive = PSP 2 Success!

Please don't let down your audience, Sony. Oh.. they're also your clients.

A lot of that is unlikely. Flash costs 12.5 times more than bluray per gigabyte. Sony'd be stupid to make the same mistake as the Go by abandoning existing owners

The Go was built on (at the time) current PSP focus. When a new lineup is released, it's usually made to move forward and away from the predecessor. That's what the DS did to the Gameboy, and although the Gameboy was the image of portable gaming, the DS has had a rousing success (somehow). If Sony does indeed decide to put focus on compatibility and design relations to the current generation of PSP iterations, it won't be a very new console worth calling "PSP2" only "PSP5000" since there is apparently a 4000 (No, not the Go).

What would be nice is a massive internal storage device. I'd pay $300 for this if it had 80GB of internal storage definitely. Of course the actual performance and hardware would have to also win me over, no use paying $300 for another PSP if it's just another redesigned PSP1.

The only good bet is 32 or 64gb.
Reason being, if there's a multi-touch screen like the iPhone/iPod touch/any other current generation touch screen phone, there can't be an actual hard drive inside of it.
The screen wouldn't be able to function properly with a spinning drive in it.
that's why we don't have a 320gb iPod touch. it HAS to have flash memory for the touch display to work correctly.

A capacitive touchscreen would suffer from the magnetic interference leaked by a magnetically-read hard disk drive.

no shit flash costs more, there's fucking circuitry in those cards. FUCKING BLUERAYS are JUST CHUNKS OF PLASTIC, once they make the manufacturing machines, and the stock of platic resin, they can just pump out billions of cheap as shit plastic disks. you fucking idiot, ur such a fucking retard you stupid bitch

Aside from what seems to be keyboard warrior rage, you've got the right idea. Blu-rays are hard portable media made up of cheap and effective materials. However, the idea is to move away from using hard media as a standard.

Like I said before, the disc doesn't need protection, just itself which doesn't take any space at all because a disc is flat.

It's not because about credit cards, it's because most of us don't like to buy digital format.

Know why? I for example like to see, feel, touch what I buy, which with digital it isn't possible.

I like the placement of the sticks in that picture much more that the PSPhone style where they look kinda cramped up in the middle.

That looks like a pretty design IMO.
The only drawback being that it looks to similar to the last generation go.

A lot of people like to buy gadgets to show off and they want it to look "next gen".

Those nubs actually look quite comfy... don't look like hard plastic, instead more like a rubber composite.

SONY is trying to cut off PREOWNED retailers from the market. That is LEGAL PIRACY (1 game for X amount of PSP's.) Companies making games will be happy for internet stores only. 1 game for 1 PSP. That means more games for PSP and maybe they will be cheaper (no box, no UMD disk, no transport, no storage and many other). Hopefully. And with so much power we can expect fantastic games. But not every customer will go for it.

If they're going digital-only they will fail.

Also, it isn't UMD "disk" it's disc, others also wrote Blu-ray "disk" it's disc.

How fucking hard is it to know the difference between a disc and a disk? :P

Used games are cheap and its condition most of the time are excellent.

As long as you don't have dyslexia and you're not an idiot then spelling words correctly should be easier than taking the time to figure out how to spell them wrong.

I really hope they do go with SD's instead of MS's. They're a lot cheaper since a lot of devices use them, unlike how MS's were only used in Sony products.

What I hope they do is release games in a media card format... whether they're proprietary or not (they probably will be to prevent piracy). They did it back in the day with music on SD cards, but the iPod completely changed music players as we know them (portable size, acceptable battery life, storage space)

Flash memory is around the same price today as hard drives were about 5 1/2 years ago (back then a 60gb iPod video was $399, now a 64gb iPod touch is the same price), so by that standard, if they jammed 64gb memory and all that jazz into this PSP2 thing, they might be able to sell it for $399. If it's any less hardware for that price or more, It's not worth it to me.

no UMD drive.?!@
does that mean there would be NO backwards compatibility with the original PSP games? or does that mean backwards compatibility only works if you have bought the game on the PSN already. i have a whole bunch of UMD games and it really ticks me off how there isn't a way to play them on a PSPgo.
my internet connection is disgustingly slow. by the time i finish downloading something, i could have went to the damn store and bought a physical copy.
most ipod games aren't even 100mb, so its fine with me dling them, but most psp games are over 1gb. and its gonna take forever for me to dl it. so i won't even consider getting this if it has no umd drive

They know what they doing. They want to set a new standard. No physical drives.

If some excellent game will be only available on NGP (PSP2) and there will be no UMD, what you would do?

I will buy it.
