| 3. Sony and the next step for portable gaming |
The PSP2 has long been the subject of rumor and speculation, but to this day, Sony still hasn't made the announcement on what could be their next portable gaming device. That might change tomorrow, when the media giant is holding a showcase event in Tokyo. Here, they are expected to finally lift the curtains on the elusive device. But while we still don't have the official word, here's a list of things we did learn from the rumor mill.

According to French site, 01.net, who claim to have a PSP 2 devkit, the handheld will be powered by a PowerVR SGX 543 MP4, a similar type of quad-core GPU, which Apple also plans to use for their next iOS devices. The CPU, in the meantime, will be a Sony-modified ARM Cortex A-9 quad-core processor. It may also be equipped with a Neon Media Processing Engine (MPE) that would help audio and video decompression as well as improve energy consumption.
The devkits have a 1GB RAM, but since devkits typically have twice the RAM of those that hit retail, the PSP 2 is expected to have only 512MB. The sources also claim that the new handheld will follow the PSPgo in terms of its on-board 16GB flash memory, plus there will also be an expandable SD slot.

What would be nice is a massive internal storage device. I'd pay $300 for this if it had 80GB of internal storage definitely. Of course the actual performance and hardware would have to also win me over, no use paying $300 for another PSP if it's just another redesigned PSP1.

Reason being, if there's a multi-touch screen like the iPhone/iPod touch/any other current generation touch screen phone, there can't be an actual hard drive inside of it.
The screen wouldn't be able to function properly with a spinning drive in it.
that's why we don't have a 320gb iPod touch. it HAS to have flash memory for the touch display to work correctly.

It's not because about credit cards, it's because most of us don't like to buy digital format.
Know why? I for example like to see, feel, touch what I buy, which with digital it isn't possible.

That looks like a pretty design IMO.
The only drawback being that it looks to similar to the last generation go.
A lot of people like to buy gadgets to show off and they want it to look "next gen".

Also, it isn't UMD "disk" it's disc, others also wrote Blu-ray "disk" it's disc.
How fucking hard is it to know the difference between a disc and a disk?
Used games are cheap and its condition most of the time are excellent.

What I hope they do is release games in a media card format... whether they're proprietary or not (they probably will be to prevent piracy). They did it back in the day with music on SD cards, but the iPod completely changed music players as we know them (portable size, acceptable battery life, storage space)
Flash memory is around the same price today as hard drives were about 5 1/2 years ago (back then a 60gb iPod video was $399, now a 64gb iPod touch is the same price), so by that standard, if they jammed 64gb memory and all that jazz into this PSP2 thing, they might be able to sell it for $399. If it's any less hardware for that price or more, It's not worth it to me.

does that mean there would be NO backwards compatibility with the original PSP games? or does that mean backwards compatibility only works if you have bought the game on the PSN already. i have a whole bunch of UMD games and it really ticks me off how there isn't a way to play them on a PSPgo.
my internet connection is disgustingly slow. by the time i finish downloading something, i could have went to the damn store and bought a physical copy.
most ipod games aren't even 100mb, so its fine with me dling them, but most psp games are over 1gb. and its gonna take forever for me to dl it. so i won't even consider getting this if it has no umd drive

If some excellent game will be only available on NGP (PSP2) and there will be no UMD, what you would do?
I will buy it.
