Yes folks, the long rumored PlayStation Phone has finally landed and we got the first shots of Sony's upcoming Android-powered gaming device, down below.

According to Engadget, the upcoming PlayStation Phone will likely run on Android OS 3.0 aka Gingerbread and will feature a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow users to purchase and download games designed for the upcom. The device will included "a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches." The landscape slider will also feature a multi-touch touchpad in the center that replaces the analog stick with the usual array of PSP buttons. Engadget also added "that there's no Memory Stick slot in the device, but there is support for microSD cards."

Though the phone is still on it's early stage of development, Engadget believes that the handset could still be unveiled this year and will be available on the market in 2011.
Big thanks to Bikram S. and narutosaiyan for the tips!

Is sony bowing out of first party handheld development?
Maybe there's no PSP2 at all.

No,there is a PSP2- Confirmed by Sony, IGN, and the Developers who already have the Kit

PSP's dont run on android.
I dont think a console ever would run on a cross platform OS.
So its so far fetched that this could play PSP games, maybe pops conversions at best.
This would have to be an entirely different animal.

The metal pad thing in between the face buttons and D-pad, with the two little holes... THAT'S the analog sticks. It's a touch sensor thing.

this could be a cross over with the psp2 but i would not believe the specs it should have a powerVR gpu of some sort but that could be part of them.

Sony also didn't care if you made and installed homebrew on the original PSP.

Let me give you some history. PSP came out, sony was so proud of the security of it. Wipeout had a dns "hack" to do web browsing. Ok, that was fixed in later versions. PSP got hacked by more usable means later. PSP patched it up pretty good to the extent that uses had to resort to old copies of GTA to hack the PSP. This pattern follows with hacks and patches and being forced to upgrade to new firmwares in order to play new games.

At least on the PSP Phone there seem to be a nice little area for the touch-analog-pad-thingy where you can feel your way to the centre thus having more controll.

Either way its the lesser of both worlds.

Though, with it being a phone? Ehhhhh....
Oh well, I can hope that little feature carries over to the PSP2, though I highly doubt it.

the psp doesnt have A or B buttons lol. so most likely could be fake, until sony does announce it. but why would sony do this, when the xperia android is on the market doing so well. why would they compete against its own product, which doesnt make sense. lets wait and see.

last February the 1St was in 2008 and usually when a new device is set it's default date is around the date it was made and there is no way that was made in 2008 and is "still on it's early stage of development"???
dont know how long it takes to make one of those things but nearly 3 years before the "Real" pictures surface, cmon!!!

you can code in androidsdk/eclipse with an emulated device to actually run the OS on your pc in a little window. so who cares what the date is or that there is a and b. the devs more than likely were working on the software/os and then finally the phone came along which lead to the leak and the fact that its a psp phone based entirely on the typical playstation buttons

lol
back to the future!

In the fricken menu. Seriously. Imagine a game, chugging along that slow.
Reply
Well the OS/menu doesn't need to be blazing fast. It does have a 1 Ghz processor so that's how you save on battery life.

IF you mean to to tell me that they want this instead of th epic PSP2 ......you guys are just puppets u look at and ur like it looks good..what happened to all the people who said the pspgo looked "retarded". this is gonna probably have worser gaming than the iphone .. Sony don't produce anything even close to this garbage

Ive never gave a rats ass about the android or iphone but im actually pretty excited bout this. Its made by sony, its a phone, its obviously made with gaming in mind and it has two analog sticks if you will.
That should give you a good indication of what sony has in mind.
This could also be related to the supposed psp2 in some way.If you ask me,those face buttons and the touch pad could very well be a prototype of what the "psp2" might look like.It would make perfect business sense to use similar hardware design and hardware for both your phone/gaming device and next generation psp.
...This might get interesting.

the psp2 will be the gaming version
the phone will have both features.
Reply
Anyways yes I support this idea
Sony Ericcson Portable SEP=Android Phone
Play Station Portable 2=PSP2
and of course the PSP2 will have a better engine under its hood

Get ready for gaming phones everywhere.

its a damn prototype, its like looking at an artists painting half done and saying its crap.... this is clearly unfinished and if anyone bothered to read the engadget article they would see "it was either built by hand or a very small batch was made for development purpsoes"
i think there are just some ifail lovers amongst the commenters
