MGS: PO

Before anything else, from the title alone, you might already be able to guess what this article is going to be about: the story surrounding Konami's Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. With that said, we're warning the whole lot of you who don't want any possible spoilers to stop reading. Of course, we're just going to focus on basic stuff and not reveal anything too mind-blowing like maybe Naked Snake being the long-lost brother of Chuck Norris... Ha! Kidding! So, what is the story, morning glory?

Painting the backdrop: First things first, let's set this title in its chronological place in the whole MGS time line. While MGS 3: Snake Eater leads the bunch as the game is set in 1964, MGS: PO comes in as second. This game is set six years after Snake Eater and a prequel to Metal Gear (the first one released in the series). It still follows Naked Snake (AKA Big Boss) and will reveal how his story affects the future MGS universe.

Taking the plunge: The game starts with Naked Snake being thrown into a jail in South America. The guy responsible for his abduction is Lieutenant Cunningham. This guy interrogates Naked Snake about the Philosopher's Legacy and tries to torture the answers out of him. In the end, he's back in his jail cell where a fellow inmate fills him in on the who, what, where, and wtf of the whole situation.

Some historical fiction: If you're familiar with the whole MGS series, you'd know that the titles are based on actual historical facts - the whole ordeal between Russia, America, Cuba, et. al. We won't get into the rest of the details, here's the bare-bone stuff: this time around, the story's main conflict revolves around a certain Gene and his plan of forming his own nation of soldiers back-up with stolen nuclear weapons from both America and Russia.

Curtain rise: Where does all of this lead to? Gene, the Philosopher's Legacy, and Naked Snake himself... The only way to really know about how all these elements fit together is actually to play the rest of the game out. Also, while you're trying to figure out how all of these key figures fit into the game, there's still that one question looming in the background: how does the game itself fit into the entire series?

So there you have it. A little tease and an eye-patch. The game is coming out on December 5, better make sure you're ready.
