Sony's PhyreEngine coming to PSP

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that its free to use, cross platform PhyreEngine adopted by a number of studios and used in PSN titles is going to be available to the PSP platform this spring.

According to the press release sent by Sony, "PhyreEngine is an advanced graphics rendering engine provided as source code and tools to PlayStation 3 game developers, publishers and Tools & Middleware licensees, and used in a number of titles released on the PlayStation Store and Blu-ray Disc. PhyreEngine for the PSP system will enable game franchises to be efficiently developed to make use of the strengths of PSP platform."

Used in games like Sidhe Interactive's GripShift, thatgamecompany's Flower and flOw, and Codemasters DiRT among others, Sony is set to demonstrate PhyreEngine for the PSP along with a demo of Tunnel Shooter, a game using one of PhyreEngine's game templates at this week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Unreal Engine 3, UDK. Which has a 99 dollar charge for the engine (used to be free actually, guessing recently changed) http://www.udk.com/. Free to download. Free to make games on. You can distribute games for free I am pretty sure. If you do sell the game it is 99 with no royalties until you hit 5000 which they then take 25% of everything you made after the first 5000. This is great for small developers that don't plan on making much money. If you even manage to sell 5000 dollars worth you already pocketed 4900. After that you should still be happy as you get to keep 75% of whatever extra is coming in. Still like the free to 5000 instead of 99 dollars till 5000 because it might have allowed more innovation in gaming due to more experimental games being made. But I guess they were not seeing enough money so it now costs 99. Still free to download though. So aspiring game developers you can download it at http://www.udk.com/ and play around with it for free. It isn't a butchered version of Unreal Engine 3. It is the full damn thing. If you good enough you can make your very own Gears of War on the thing. Not sure about that though since I think Gears of War was on a customized version of Unreal Engine. But you should definitely be able to make Unreal Tournament if you have enough game developing skills.

i develop on unreal engine and UDK myself, and gears is run on a completely normal version of unreal engine (an older version than even ut3 and udk) but all of it's scripts are encrypted and can't be viewed, so although it's possible to make gears, it's code cant be ported sadly.
you can however port every bit of code from ut3 and have it work

Sony always makes pretty rubbish SDK's so this is nothing more than fixing mistakes they already made, hopefully it makes coding a bit easier and cheaper but the SDK isn't the Psp's biggest problem so all we'll really see is more shovelware.
