Sony Warning: Use Only Sony Battery for Your PSP!

Ó

psp batterySony issued a warning to all PSP owners not to use third party battery to power up their PSP. The company urged the use of genuine Sony battery pack to protect against "the danger of ignition and explosion etc."  Sony said while they can guarantee the standards of their battery pack, other brands could cause "accident and breakdown and it is dangerous".

They also said to be on the look out for fake Sony battery packs since any damage caused the company cannot be held responsible for any damages cause by these knock-offs and third party battery packs. If you have experienced any kind of damage from using party battery packs other than Sony's, you may tell Sony about it. We don't think they will replace your PSP, but at least they can tell other PSP users "we told you so."

» O rly

Is there an actual risk or are sony just trying to get people to buy thier battery packs instead

(PS hopefully ive denied a n00b the ability to say OMFG First post !!!!!!!)

» OMFG

just to spite you #1...

SECOND POST! ZOMG!

Ah well, another ploy in sony's vast armament to lock down people into fear of blowing up their technology if/when they're not using their own so-damnexpensive-ny batteries.

Then again, age old adage "buy only from trusted, proven worthy sources". Nothing wrong with 3rd party, just make sure you did some research into reliability.

What's next, using non Sony memorysticks can make your wifi fail?

by kope - 2006-07-04 21:49
» yeah

that's what i thought too... prolly sony is just trying to make ppl buy their hyper expensive products and not the 3th party ones. shame on urself, $ONY!

by welp - 2006-07-04 21:49
» well, sony only tested their own batteries

sony tested their batteries to be 100% comptabile with the psp. other brands were not supported by sony, so sony can say their brand works 100% and other brands don't. In reality, any battery should be fine. this is just popping up cause sony wouldn't replace someones psp who had a different battery pack.

by akuma2099 - 2006-07-04 21:51
» Sure ...

Please only use our expensive batteries. I've had one of the extended power batteries for a while now without any problems and it's not a Sony brand battery. I think it's just Sony trying to fool people into buying their overpriced batteries.

(P.S Every time they are denied the first post ability somewhere a n00b dies)

by cory1492 - 2006-07-04 21:54
» BS

After only some months of use, the connections that the battery uses (using only the official sony battery) are becoming corroded (at the mainboard/soldered connection itself on the positive lead) and have that nice white grit associated with battery leakage and corrosion between 2 types of metals.

"our more expensive, shorter life batteries are better and wont damage your PSP".. yeah, sure, anything you say Sony...

Use only official batteries? Ha Ha, wait for the unofficial Firmwares...........

» Battery...

One must know that battery tech is sometime difficult to master correctly.

It happened that battery in mobile phones exploded already... and more than one customer.

That's why all big makers of battery (most of them japanese) take care of their building process to avoid customer trouble.

But for "small" makers trying to make money out of the mobile market, I bet quality test, quality of process is most likely to be weaker than big makers with huge customer base.

Personnally, I understand why Sony would issue such warning. But yes, it is still better for them that you buy their battery instead of competitor ones

While the risk is may be 1 over millions with a known brand company. It may divided by 4 or 5 with small makers.

» DO NOT BUY STUFF COMING FROM CHINA ON EBAY

I saw Sony's 'new' battery on ebay once, yeah that one with 20% more capacity (2200mAh)

It looked real and was cheap ($25) (the seller was from china)

So I bought it, when I recieved it that package looked real

but when I used it, my psp turned off after a while but without warning (the green light blinking)

So I recharged it and used it watching the 'Battery Information'

I saw that the battery emptied just before it said 25%

So, my conclusion is that MY PSP BATTERY IS FAAAAAAKKKKKKEE EEEE!!!!!

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING ON EBAY COMING FROM CHINA!!!!!!

EVERYTHING COMING FROM CHINA IS 100% FAKE!!!!!!!!

(i also bought some 2GB mms from china, all fake)

i haven't tried any third party batteries, i just use the original, the batteries have short life=[

by Bigreecieboy - 2006-07-04 23:16
» Seriously.....

Seriously though, remeber the 3'rd party battery that was recalled about 2 months ago? (pelican? I think) There were issues with them exploding during a recharge, and from the pics I saw, the PSP came off second best. ( well, the bits I could see....)

Personally, I use Sony's 2200mAh battery and keep the original for a spare. Simply for the reason that it fits inside the PSP, not like some of the cheap external "booster packs" that are available.

» Sony has no other option in cases like this

Sony has no other option but to only support their own products. They have no/very limited control over what 3rd party products are out there. From a liability standpoint, they cannot be held responsible for the failure of someone else's products. Someone here mentioned that they were trying to dodge lawsuits. And why shouldn't they? Just because they are Sony doesn't mean they should stand in front of every legal freight train that comes along.

They're simply saying they're not going to cover damages from SOMEONE ELSE'S PRODUCT.

Here's a scenario for you: Let's say you run a store of your own. Someone buys a cheap-ass knock-off accessory from someone else and it breaks. They come to your store, complain, and ask you to replace it. What would you do? Hand out free stuff to every jerk that walks in? I doubt it.

by InTheZone - 2006-07-05 00:13
» um why would I pay $40 for a standar battery

when paying $20 for one gives me more. I've been using rechargeable batteries for 10+ years, I've never had a probelm with any of them.

Both psp batteries put out the same power, both are the same size, nothing leaks, sony is just trying to get us to buy their ever expensive non-selling batteries.

Hey sony, offer an internal battery that's 3000mah or higher and I'll buy it, but only if it's not higher than your current batteries.

» 3rd party products

As we all know, all china does is rip off our products. Why you ask...simple they are all thieving yellow bellied tards that couldn't actually come up with an original idea when it comes to hardware. No offense to some of the talented homebrewers out there but we have to relize that were selling out to china and we should start bringing back our jobs to our country both here in the US o A and Canada. Some 3rd party companies are good including the ones here in the US so why not buy a good home grown product from your own country instead of a oppressive theiving country like china!

» haha sony sucks just like every consumer product

every day i,m gonna hate sony more, this is just a stupid money isseu, like they do with every consumer products

the same stupid thing like the mobile phones, the hold for 6 months maybe 1 year but then it is total destroyed and to much used, ive got like 2 or 3 phones in a year, that explain also why the netherlands has more mobile phones than people (really, this is proven)

i remember the days i had a very strong nokia which was at the size of a psp and was that strong you can let fall 1000 times, and it was not broken. you could even beat up people with it

now they make al the consumer stuf at a rate that people have to buy a new one very soon, now when i buy a phone and hold it between my two hands and when i twist it, it crackles and noizles and is gonna break very easily

btw if the mobile phones last for 4 years then all the evolution will be out the phones, then we dont have 1 million differenth modedls cause no one will buy one if his phone would longer then 1 year, thats ofcourse the downside

I have the third party battery pack that you can open up and put AAA batteries in. It was useful on a 10 hour plane trip, but it only lasted an hour/half of playing then it froze and wouldn't turn off untill I took the pack out. That could've done some damage after excessive use I guess.

Do you guys remember the exploding cel phones? Or the ones that just burst into flames? Or the exploding laptops? They were all battery failures.

The laptops are usually a manufacturing defect in a batch of batteries, where the exploding and burning cel phones you hear about are people buying cheap batteries, and having them short out, or overheat becaues they don't have the slightly expensive monitoring and shutoff hardware.

Look up the use of Cobalt Oxide in Lithium batteries, and you will find some scary stuff about how it overheats - basically it can hit a point of no return, then whatever you do, it's going up in smoke.

Just like 3rd party memory cards MIGHT work, and might corrupt after the 5th use like so many of us have seen firsthand, 3rd party batteries MIGHT work, and then again, they might just explode. Your choice which you use, but when dealing with miniaturized hardware like PSP, phones, and laptops, things are generally engineered about as tight as they can safely get, and quite simply, when you take shortcuts manufacturing, your product is cheap but dangerous.

» Man, you people are dumb...

Your reading comprehension skills are below Kindergarten level, I swear.

Look. The statement above does not say, "non-Sony batteries will explode." The statement does say, "non-Sony batteries *could* explode." That's the only stance they can take on the matter. They're not in the business of testing batteries from other companies and they cannot guarantee their safety or their functionality since they haven't been tested. They didn't make or sell the product, so why should they stand behind it?

Yes, they are saying that to get you to buy their batteries, but it's for your and their own protection. See, if you happen to have an after-market battery in there and it happens to wreck your PSP, it would cost Sony money to fix it under warranty if they were to cover it. But they won't cover it if it fails because it's not their product. That's essentially what they're getting at. They won't cover it and you'll have to either cover the repair bill yourself or buy a whole new PSP if it is damaged beyond repair.

By buying a Sony battery, it's like getting a better warranty included with their higher price. If a Sony battery leaks on you, you can be fairly sure that Sony would cover the repair bill without too much hassle, perhaps even after your warranty has expired since it would be considered a safety hazard. I call that cheap insurance.

When it comes to batteries, you get what you pay for. I'm a mechanical engineer and I can tell you that without any degree of doubt. The reason Sony's batteries are more expensive is because they use better materials than most aftermarket companies. The aftermarket guys have less at stake by cutting corners on the product, so they try to maximize profits by minimizing costs. They do that by using the cheapest materials and processes they can get away with. What I'm getting at is just because it works doesn't mean it's just as good.

I can see where Sony's coming from by releasing that PR. I remember when Nokia had the fake battery debacle (Which is why all new Nokia lithium batteries have that holo-sticker on them). I even had one of those batteries rupture in my phone, took me a week to get the thing replaced and a new SIM card for it. If there are reports of 3rd party batteries failing/rupturing/exploding, then I'll stick with Sony batteries that have been through decent QA. ^ Is lithium-ion the ideal battery?

Quote:

Despite its overall advantages, lithium-ion has its drawbacks. It is fragile and requires a protection circuit to maintain safe operation. Built into each pack, the protection circuit limits the peak voltage of each cell during charge and prevents the cell voltage from dropping too low on discharge. In addition, the cell temperature is monitored to prevent temperature extremes.

Come on guys, how much money are we talking? The difference between official and unofficial batteries' prices aren't that big. Plus, it really is true that bad batteries could harm your electronic devices, no questions asked.

Plus, you can't get your warranty if you've saved a few bucks buying PSP-destroying batteries. I for one will buy the official battery once my current one is dead. Probably, I'll buy the big one.
